  1. YAY fellow scientist! I just figured that there must have been salt added to the bananas when they were turned into chips. I looked, and while many recipes just use oil, some call for soaking the bananas in cold salted water first. That would explain the 2mgs, because 2mgs is a really puny amount. I would suggest try lightly salting a few and tasting...
  2. I hope you can tell by the 11 replies in less than 12 hours that you are definitely NOT alone! It does suck to struggle socially, and feel isolated. It will get better. I don't know if the feelings will ever disappear completely, but they won't be so incredibly frustrating. The amazing way you feel will soon cancel out all the crappy that you feel socially...
  3. And King Arthur brownies (from their gluten-free mix) are KILLER.
  4. I was in a similar boat when I first got diagnosed. I was negative for everything - no deficiences, nada. They only did the endoscopy + biopsy because it was the only thing they hadn't yet tested for. My Gi doc had to be very specific and insist that they do the biopsy no matter how things "looked." Because sure enough, they "looked" fine even when they...
  5. Blackthorn & woodchuck ciders are supposedly gluten free...?
  6. "at least we're dealing with this today, when there's gluten free awareness...10 years ago...it would have been 10x worse I imagine. " Oh, this is SO true. Even just eight years ago things were way different. Awareness was not high. Bread from the stores was atrocious. Cardboard, inedible... Nobody knew what celiac sprue was. the word "gluten" drew...
  7. Well... YAY for the good things! yeah, I do hate it when I am not feeling well and my symptoms get in the way of my life. I hate feeling totally wiped out after bouts of intestinal unhappiness. It's maddening when I can't figure out whats making me ill! It's not always gluten since I have colitis and am super sensitive to dairy too. And sometimes things...
  8. hmm... There are 90mgs sodium and 25mgs potassium in 8oz gatorade, and in a raw banana there is no sodium but a crapload of potassium (one medium has over 400mgs). Same w/oranges (~200mgs). In banana chips you've got about 2mgs sodium and 150mgs potassium. It looks like potassium helps your muscles and sodium helps with sweat. So, enough of the info...
  9. I say try it! I think it will work if you can actually digest it without problems. It would give me pause personally because the banana chips have a tougher consistency, and I know my tummy would have to work harder to break it down. But, like i said, it's definitey worth a shot. Maybe dried cranberries too? Even though it might end up as a mushy mess...
  10. So, the good news is that with your positive attitude, I can promise you it will get better. I also completely empathize with your desire to be "normal" again. It's best to feel that pain now, so that it doesn't bite you later. I refused to allow those feelings in when I was first diagnosed and I feel pretty whacked out now, almost 10 years later. Someone...
  11. I get the plain, not the vanilla, and I usually blend it with OJ or soymilk and a banana. That sort of mellows out the flavor a bit. If you add more fruits like berries, peaches, it hides it even more. But that depends on how well your gut is holding up. Even though the extra fruit is blended, if your gut is really inflamed I would keep it to the juice...
  12. Yeah - hopefully this theory won't pan out!! I don't know why, but my spidey sense tells me that gluten probably can't hang around and hide and bite you randomly later. It does sound more like a virus of some sorts. You've been through a lot recently! You might be more suseptible to stuff than normal... Regardless, I hope it goes away pronto!
  13. Unfortunately I can't find much in the way of a definitive answer after wading through the literature, and now my break is over. Ultimately gluten would have to a) get past the gut via the leaky gut syndrome (a phenomenon that I am not sure is fully accepted), and 2) gluten has be to able to actually be taken up by the tissue. The biggest fraction of gluten...
  14. I am so sorry to hear that you are sick!! This is a very interesting thought. It has happened to me before that I get sick as if I am getting gluten, but cannot trace any gluten anywhere (even after calling ALL manufacturers of anything I have eaten since I felt bad), and there were no colitis triggers. I'm in research, so my science brain is off to figure...
  15. Oh thank goodness that the D part goes away quickly - that for sure screws with your hydration, even if you feel ok. I mean, D by definition means more water loss than normal. I am sorry that the bad incidents are so bad. I don't know what to suggest other than more tp - I totally cram all available pockets with it when I am worried. Incidents freak...
  16. I am so so sorry for your pain. I have been there. I was sick for six weeks once too and it was one of the worst times ever. It sounds like your gut is really inflamed like you say. Then it doesn't matter what you eat - even if it is stuff you can eat when your gut is not inflamed. I've fasted before and it "helps" but it's not really good for you. ...
  17. A sprint is definitely not nothing!! YAY for you for getting on out there and trying it. I hear you on all fronts - from the jelly legs on the brick to feeling wiped out to the stupid bathroom runs! For the jelly legs - firstly I would say just keep at the bricks. I would recommend one every other week. That part will get better, I promise. Plus,...
  18. Omg - again, someone has hit the nail on the head of something that was adding stress but i didn't realize it. It's really draining to have to think about food ALL the time. I have to think about it all the time - not just because of how I feel and what I think my gut can handle, but because I am an endurance athlete. I have to plan and track my food...
  19. I'm with Stylo on Nor-TX's experience. Shocked that people can be so cruel! I don't think asking questions about the can and can't have of celiac sprue is too rude, but the waving the brownie around is just horrid. HORRID! As for the original post, I think that saying something along the lines of "celiac sprue is more compicated than the typical allergy...
  20. I am amazed. I realize that I am a lot like wheatchef - even though I do love cooking and baking, being at the supermarket does torment me too. But of course I didn't really *realize* it. Just recently I started going to the market less because I realize I have a lot of food in my freezer, and I think I feel "lighter." I thought it was because I just...
  21. I have really low BP pretty regularly as well, AND I have raynauds. I think as long as you are not fainting, the low BP is ok. How much salt are you getting per day? The low BP may be related to not having enough salt...
  22. I am so relieved that there are people out there feeling the same as I am. I DO feel a bit bipolar about it because I know that being gluten-free/CF keeps me healthy, and that keeps me happy, ultimately. But on the other hand, there is that social loss of sorts. It IS painful to be "different" when so much of our society revolves around food for socializing...
  23. Good luck - for sure! It is a fine balance knowing when exercise will help you vs weaken you. Hopefully you will feel up to exercising in a few days. Ultimately though, you shouldn't feel bad about not being about to work out. Gotta rest so you can get better sooner! What are they looking for this time with the EGD...?
  24. wow - you totally hit the nail on the head. I am honestly happy with the foods I have, and comfortable making things gluten-free/CF. Back when I was first diagnosed there wasn't too much out there really. The past few years have really exploded in terms of options and knowledge and awareness. I think maybe part of my sadness lies in the fact I can't just...
  25. I feel like I am cheating by responding because I am in training for a half ironman in a few weeks, but today I swam for an hour and biked for an hour and a half. I love love love to train, and I can get really sad when I am limited by having to run to the bathroom. I do think that my intestines are much happier when my workouts are good. Hopefully you...
