Thanks for the tip! Those sound really handy. -
ARCHIVED All The Celiac People On This Website Had Bad Gi Symptoms
Skylark replied to possiblyglutensensitive's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have FAITH in yourself. You've made the decision to try this diet and don't let friends and family sway you. You'll be so grateful if it helps with the depression and anxiety. My personality has totally changed for the better gluten-free and nowadays I'm generally relaxed and happy. I wish I had been off gluten all my life! Cooking takes practice... -
ARCHIVED Had Enough

It sounds like you feel awful. I know how bad that fatigue can get because gluten caused it for me. Low vitamin D can make you feel really lousy. My Dr. told me to get a 2000 IU supplement when mine tested low and I feel a lot better. Going gluten-free doesn't make people sick if that's what you're asking about diet. Folks without gluten intolerance... -
I have one area along my right index finger used to get intensely itchy and would sometimes have a blister or two. It baffled a doctor because there is no reason for me to have herpes whitlow and neither of us thought of DH. I'm pretty sure it's DH because it hasn't blistered in a few years now and when I got stuck eating CC'd food over a weekend trip it...

ARCHIVED How Important Is A Dignosis?
Skylark replied to possiblyglutensensitive's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was never formally diagnosed. It hasn't been an issue for me at all. You don't require much special care as a gluten-free celiac if you're really careful with the diet. If you're likely to cheat with the gluten, it might we wise to pursue diagnosis. Gluten makes me feel awful so I stick to a very careful diet because it works best for me. -
ARCHIVED Neurologist Wants Me Gluten Free As A "test"

I went through this too. I almost failed out of my doctoral program because I crashed and burned in differential equations. I just couldn't think clearly enough to get through the algebra without making mistakes. Fortunately, I figured out the gluten problem partway through school. I took a year-long leave of absence and went back with a much more functional... -

Wow, I can see why you're so upset. Please feel free to vent. That's part of why the board is here. I feel really bad for having upset you. Going without even COBRA is really hard. As Raven said, isn't there new legislation where she can go on your insurance if she is under 26? Remember that she has to eat gluten for 2-3 months for the celiac panel... -

Interesting. Your experience directly contradicts this peer-reviewed evaluation of IgG4. Open Original Shared Link "In conclusion, food-specific IgG4 does not indicate (imminent) food allergy or intolerance, but rather a physiological response of the immune system after exposition to food components. Therefore, testing of IgG4 to foods is considered... -

Please don't feel like you are defending yourself. Your messages sound so distressed and frustrated I was trying to help you sort fact from myth! I am a scientist and it's what I do all day long, both here and at work. We get into these awful health problems and have to self-diagnose on top of it all and tell the doctors who are supposed to be helping... -
ARCHIVED Neurologist Wants Me Gluten Free As A "test"
Skylark replied to Ellette's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your neurologist is absolutely right that the tests are unreliable. They look in your blood for a problem located in your brain and gut BUT they work in some people. If you get a positive you have firm answers, which is really nice. One thing to be sure to ask for is anti-gliadin. It's considered "outdated" for celiac but in the gluten-caused neurological... -
ARCHIVED Would You Eat This Product?

Also the completely plain Faye yogurt is to die for. It's the creamiest yogurt I've ever eaten and I'm hooked on the stuff with a handful of berries. -

Yoplait brand is putting "gluten free" on many of their yogurts if you want something you know is safe. -
I've never seen jicama served cooked, and it's eaten a lot around here. Slice it into french-fry sized pieces and soak it in lemon or lime juice with a little salt. It's good plain or in green or fruit salads.

ARCHIVED Neurologist Wants Me Gluten Free As A "test"
Skylark replied to Ellette's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm confused. If your doctor suspects celiac did she order the blood tests? Not all celiacs show the antibodies but it's the standard of care these days. As Dixiebell says, you MUST be eating gluten for the tests to work so call your doctor and ask for a celiac panel before you start the diet. You may also want to hold off until you get those results and... -
ARCHIVED Experimenting With Gluten & Gut Recovery
Skylark replied to mr-da's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was looking at your original post. If you think you're celiac, testing with a nibble of wheat is not necessarily going to tell you much. Sometimes I react to traces, but last time I ate a wheat cracker by mistake (whoops, wrong box) I was perfectly fine. You also CANNOT be eating an occasional nibble of cereal even if you don't react. It will still... -
ARCHIVED Product (Salt) May Contain Traces Of Wheat, ...
Skylark replied to possiblyglutensensitive's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'd say it depends on your individual level of sensitivity. Sometimes it's just a "cover your ass" label that doesn't mean much. I did react to a bag of macadamia nuts with the "may contain traces" warning recently. I was eating "may contain traces" Harry and David truffles over Christmas with no problems. It's just never very predictable with that label... -
I wouldn't mess with barley beer. Malting removes some of the gluten but not all of it. If you run across them, the Green's gluten-free beers are pricey but really good. Maybe you could get them special ordered or something. Open Original Shared Link All the ciders I've checked so far have been gluten-free. Supposedly local or small brands can put...

ARCHIVED Biopsy Necessity
Skylark replied to beefree11's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You forget how many people suffer from thyroid issues who are not celiac, and how many celiacs do not have thyroid issues. The connection seems to be an underlying immune dysfunction. It has been shown to have a genetic link, but many disease with underlying genetics can still be sporadic in families. It sounds like you're looking for something/someone... -
ARCHIVED Processed On Equipment That Also Processes Wheat
Skylark replied to quincy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would hope a month-long cleaning would be able to get any residual gluten off the machine! At least they are taking everything apart and being thorough. I believe Kinnikinnick's cutoff is down at 10 ppm so they must know what they're doing. It really is scary about shared machinery. -
ARCHIVED Lupus? Ms? Or Just Crazy?
Skylark replied to AMP's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'll second the vitamins, minerals and hormones. You need D, B12, iron, and a thyroid panel. Brain shocks and tingling really sound like B12 deficiency. There is no harm in taking a 500 or 1000 mcg sublingual methylcobalamin (B12) supplement and 1000-2000 IU of vitamin D no matter what the tests say. Also, how careful is your diet? A lot of us become... -

Skylark replied to joshnjustinsmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Good luck! Bread is overrated. Welcome to the world of garlic-mashed potatoes, yams, fragrant rice, and old-fashioned cornbread made in a cast iron pan. There's lots of good gluten-free food. My vitamin D was 28, below the 30-100 cutoff. I was borderline anemic and low-normal calcium, never anything dramatic. -
ARCHIVED Processed On Equipment That Also Processes Wheat
Skylark replied to quincy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There was a study that came out earlier this year showing that "shared machinery" foods have a higher chance of being CC'd with allergens than "shared facility" foods. That video is not surprising at all, and making me glad I'm moving away from eating processed foods. Ewww! -
ARCHIVED Please Help...celiac Panel And Genetic Test
Skylark replied to DoogiePCT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The biopsy will show it if you're celiac. It is possible to be non-celiac gluten intolerant and still have malabsorption issues. The only way to tell would be to try the diet. With the DQ2.5/DQ8 genetic results it wouldn't surprise me in the least if you feel better off gluten. Even if you are not celiac now, and you can use your genetic risk factors... -
ARCHIVED Still Losing Weight After Almost 2 Months
Skylark replied to moggio's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It sounds to me like you need to talk to a doctor about how you feel in the morning. You can add calories to a gluten-free/CF diet to gain weight by adding fats and carbs. Have a little more rice, add potatoes to your diet, or have a corn tortilla with your meal. Eat more seeds, nuts and nut butters; snack on olives or hummus; have some soy butter, olive... -
ARCHIVED New Dgp Iga Igg Lab Results
Skylark replied to Marlie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm glad to hear you got a firm diagnosis and are over the wondering. You were lucky to get a good doctor and your daughter was very lucky to have her celiac diagnosed in her teens rather than her thirties like me. Her low-normal IgA would make it a little harder to get positive results on EMA and TTG. The lower the total IgA is, the higher the chance...
