ARCHIVED Green & Black Organic Chocolate
Skylark replied to Mom-of-Two's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Super-sensitivity is uncommon. The chocolate sounds fine to me since it doesn't have wheat warnings. They may have been making something with wheat and discontinued it. -
ARCHIVED I Added Back My First Food That Bugged Me, And It Wasn't A Gluten Product!
Skylark replied to giggleburger's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had to go onto an antibiotic for bronchitis. After that my Hashimoto's titer went way up and I think it's when the dairy reactions started. I believe some bacteria I really needed got killed off along with the bronchitis and it started some leaky gut trouble. Yes, triple-drat. There are amines in cheese and yogurt. I'm starting to wonder... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab's Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase Antibody Test
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Then I misunderstood. I'm sorry I wrote that. I really was kind of offended but I understand what you meant now. Please don't write off the forum because I was confused. We really value new members and we try hard to help. You may get some useful info from the Enterolab TTG. I hope so, but above all, please trust your body with the gluten sensitivity... -

Try not to label the information we offer as "poo-poo", perhaps? -
ARCHIVED I Added Back My First Food That Bugged Me, And It Wasn't A Gluten Product!

I got soy back after a year of so of mostly avoiding it. I got dairy back for a while but I seem to be reacting again. (Drat, drat, drat!) -
ARCHIVED Explain Positive Biopsy In English :)
Skylark replied to Mom-of-Two's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The "intraepithelial lymphocytosis" means that there are a lot of white blood cells (lymphocytes) in your biopsy. There are not normally a lot of lymphocytes in the mucosa, just a few here and there to deal with food-borne bacteria. The autoimmune antibodies in celiac disease signal large numbers of a particular type of lymphocyte called natural killer... -

Don't be scared. Remember, the whole point of an elimination diet is to find your reactions. If you don't react to anything you won't get the answers you're looking for. That's the REAL thing to be scared of, that you go to all the trouble and don't get an answer at the end! Try to welcome the reactions as more of an "Oh, good I found something" rather... -

I've ruled out corn, rice, and I don't seem to react to gums because I can eat the So Delicious coconut products. I'm not sure about potatoes. My reactions are still confusing but it seems more like nightshade-caused fatigue than asthma. I need to go buy a bag of tapioca flour one of these days. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab's Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase Antibody Test
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Until Enterolab does what everyone else has to do to validate a diagnostic test, demonstrating good specificity and a low false positive rate, well-trained scientists like myself will keep calling them out. I keep fighting so hard because I think fecal AGA testing for gluten intolerance is a complete scam. It takes advantage of stressed-out people looking... -

OMG you poor thing. That's awful. You need another GI. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab's Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase Antibody Test
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There is no validated diagnostic test for gluten sensitivity. We told you that in the other thread; making a new thread will not change the facts. If gluten sensitivity is all you're looking for, you are just wasting money at Cyrex. (They will be happy to tell you otherwise and take your $$ but if you trust them I have a bridge for sale in New York City... -
ARCHIVED Enterolabs?
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If I had that reading I would be concerned. The evidence for fecal TTG being abnormal in the literature is much more convincing than that for AGA and you are well above the negative reading. Problem is, fecal TTG is not specific for celiac. It can appear in inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's and ulcerative colitis. https://www.celiac.com/articles... -
ARCHIVED Not Tolerating "low Gluten" Host
Skylark replied to llama3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That Fasano study where he concluded that 10 mg/day is "safe" is about the worst thing that has ever happened to the celiac community. In that study, people who hadn't healed by biopsy were excluded. In other words, they didn't enroll the people who might be more sensitive. In fairness, they couldn't enroll people with abnormal biopsies because the study... -
ARCHIVED Enterolabs?
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hopefully you'll get your answers. Be sure to prod your Dr. for the vitamin testing so she only has to go through one blood draw. -
ARCHIVED Green & Black Organic Chocolate
Skylark replied to Mom-of-Two's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you silent celiac, or just generally worried? I have noticeable gluten reactions so I don't worry about foods to which I don't react. -
ARCHIVED Enjoy Life Cookies And Diarrhea
Skylark replied to Cashe2's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I get mild asthma reactions from a lot of processed gluten-free foods. It's not likely a gluten CC reaction for me because I get GI trouble from wheat. I haven't figured out what gets me yet. -
ARCHIVED Extremely High Ttg
Skylark replied to Jodie8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Since you're declining the biopsy, I would ask for a confirmatory test that is more specific for celiac disease, either anti-EMA or deamidated gliadin before he is off gluten for too long. I assume you've taken him gluten-free, so you will have to get the test done fairly quickly (within a week would be good). With the high TTG number and yellowed skin I... -
ARCHIVED Enterolabs?
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Did she have TTG at Enterolab or only anti-gliadin? If she only has anti-gliadin I'm sorry to say it, but she needs the blood draw. The blood test is not as sensitive as one would hope, but it will catch 3 out of 4 cases of celiac so it's well worth doing. Unlike Enterolab, false positives are pretty rare on the blood tests. If she has no GI issues... -
ARCHIVED Enterolabs?
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The problem with Enterolab is that their own data show that fecal anti-gliadin is a poor predictor of feeling better on the diet. There is also a peer-reviewed study showing fecal AGA appearing and disappearing in the stools of healthy people who are able to eat wheat comfortably. In addition, when Enterolab tested healthy people they got a very high... -
ARCHIVED Confused, Frustrated, Upset And Tired Of High Ttg Levels
Skylark replied to Nannu's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The sensitivity of AGA is very poor, anywhere from 33%-60% depending on the study. Sorry, but your doctor is correct and you can't really interpret your daughter's negative AGA. Hopefully her TTG will fall some in the next six months. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease To Refractory Sprue
Skylark replied to USF1970's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Character assassination does not help your argument. It only serves to make you look bad. I think everyone knows how dangerous refractory sprue can be. I'm sure USF1970's doctors are taking it seriously. -
ARCHIVED Suspect Celiac - What To Do?
Skylark replied to ucemmy22's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, you could be celiac or gluten intolerant. Is there more than one doctor in your family practice group? I think you need to ask for a second opinion so you can get the celiac blood tests covered under insurance. If you don't have any other options as far as general practice docs, ask for a GI referral and keep being a pest until someone tests you.... -
ARCHIVED Is Gluten Bad For Everyone?
Skylark replied to Seifer's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi and welcome to the board. No, gluten is not bad for everyone. There are a lot of pseudo-scientific websites written around the Internet that may sound convincing but they are not accurate. It's a fad right now to think of wheat as bad and people are making money on websites and books that attack the latest dietary villain. These same people probably... -
ARCHIVED Anti-Glidan Positive And This Article On Celiac.com?
Skylark replied to TJSpin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with looking at dates. In this case ELISA methodology has become somewhat more sensitive in the last 15 years but we're still looking at essentially the same test. They would have been reading biopsies more conservatively in 1996 but if anything that would lower the specificity. It's hard to find newer studies on AGA because that's about the time... -
Why don't you eat more naturally high-protein foods like egg whites and chicken breast? Processed foods are so hard to tolerate compared to natural foods. I've gotten very suspicious of anything that comes in a can or a carton.
