  1. You might be pleasantly surprised at how gluten-free improves your system. Allergies can come and go and no allergy list from a blood test will be perfect. The tests are meant to be a guide to an elimination diet. I notice you reacted to wheat, gluten, barley, and malt, which does suggest gluten intolerance. Take out gluten for good - the stuff is no good...
  2. Ugh, I know those mood swings all too well. I was bipolar on gluten. I had to take some pretty hard-core vitamins and lots of fish oil to get my mind to work normally again. There is intolerance and classic allergy. Intolerance can cause all sorts of symptoms including mostly mental. There aren't the classic allergy symptoms like hives or itching with...
  3. There's a bunch of research on ancient wheat cultivation and strains that were grown. You might find Wikipedia a useful jumping-off point if you are curious about ancient wheat. As I mentioned, some of the ancient grains were higher in protein than modern wheat. (Wikipedia itself can be iffy but it usually references some good articles.) Protein in general...
  4. Welcome. Yes, it could definitely be celiac! Her symptoms are really typical. Is celiac testing even reliable on methotrexate? I would wonder since it suppresses the immune system. Dermatitis herpetiformis, the celiac rash, is intensely itchy. I used to have what I think was a patch of it and it was scratch-my-skin-off itchy. I didn't always get...
  5. Be aware that GAPS is a very high amine and salicylate diet. I'm having a lot of migraines now and I suddenly realized they got considerably worse on GAPS. If you're sure natural food chemicals are not an issue for you it may be worth giving GAPS a try. GAPS did sort my recurring yeast, but not much else. This website is worth browsing. Open Original...
  6. Pull it together Alice. Do you want to die of cancer or be stuck with thyroid autoimmunity like me? NO CUPCAKES!!! Find a grocery store and get yourself a gluten-free treat until you get home and can make yourself some gluten-free ones. Snickers bars are good! The vaccine may or may not work. So far it has only passed safety studies and it actually...
  7. Hmmm.... Some ideas. High B12 can make you feel ill and yours is VERY high. I assume you have stopped supplementing? What is your Dr. doing to address the low iron? It can be given IV. Usually with sytemic candida you'll have thrush or recurring vaginal yeast. Coconut oil is great, but for me it takes a probiotic as well to get candida under control...
  8. Hi and welcome. One week gluten-free is not enough to throw off a blood test if you're back on gluten for the next 7 or 8 weeks. The usual advice is to be eating the equivalent of 4 slices of bread a day during testing. Take the next few weeks to enjoy all the gluteny foods you might have to say goodbye to like artisan bread, pastry, pizza, and onion rings...
  9. Gluten-free steel cut oats with an egg over easy on top.
  10. My brother, who refuses to try gluten-free, uses a steroid paste that he puts on a canker sore when it's first starting. It keeps them from getting bad. Your doctor or dentist could probably prescribe it for you.
  11. That's wonderful that your DH is coming around! He sounds like he has gluten issues too. A week may be long enough for him to feel better but I'd sure like to see him try the diet for at least two. Your son with the eczema probably needs to be gluten-free and if both you and DH are gluten intolerant your other two kids may also have issues. Take heart...
  12. I had trouble with coffee when my stomach was all irritated from gluten. Now it's fine. It would have helped tremendously 20 years ago if my stupid doctor had told me to go off wheat rather than coffee when he diagnosed me with gastritis.
  13. Enterolab has the disadvantage of not being validated but the advantage of almost always coming up positive for something. It's more of a "convince your spouse" test than a "do I have celiac disease?" test, which certainly has its uses. You're almost guaranteed to get a genetic result that forbids you from eating gluten ever again, since everything but...
  14. Sheesh. Maybe it's to be sure you keep needing the pills. If you find the dyes troublesome you could look into having a compounding pharmacy make you some plain capsules.
  15. I get them two days after getting glutened. It's one of the sure signs I got CC'd. They didn't go away immediately after I started the diet. Maybe after a year or so I realized I could bite the inside of my mouth and not automatically get a canker sore. I never get them now unless I'm glutened. (Been on the diet 7 years.)
  16. It's far from free now! The handbook with lists is $20, Friendly Food is $30, and shipping is an outrageous $55. Sue has shopping lists on her websites but it's confusing to try to figure out which foods to challenge because I don't know what overlaps. There isn't much on the challenge protocol in her book either. I guess I don't have to worry about...
  17. Some people react to natural food chemicals like glutamate and salicylates. Grapes are perfectly fine if you tolerate these chemicals, but if you don't they would make you sick. You would approach a food chemical addiction causing problems by using the Failsafe elimination diet developed at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Australia. You have to...
  18. No, zero is not the normal level. The normal level is what the lab has designated as the reference range, <20 in your case. That said, you were NOT tested for gluten intolerance becasue there is no such thing. You were tested for celiac, which is an autoimmune disease. It is still worth trying the gluten-free diet to check for intolerance if your...
  19. I'm into migraines. Ugh. Shifting my diet around yet again from GAPS to a low food chemical diet called Failsafe. Getting upset easily is part of allergic reactions. If I were you I'd try some Zyrtec or Claritin. Both name-brand pills are gluten-free.
  20. I just read Sue Dengate's book, Fed Up. She says hardly anyone reacts to refined sugar, though obviously it's empty calories and promotes tooth decay. Candy is loaded with both natural and artificial chemicals including food colors, natural amines (chocolate), salicylates in the flavorings, preservatives, and artificial flavors. You mention liking grapes...
  21. I'm getting migraines on GAPS so I'm switching gears and going low food-chemical. I got Sue Dengate's book and it explains the elimination part well enough but it doesn't have much in the way of food lists or challenge info. I found the RPAH website but the books are AUD $55 to have shipped to the US. On top of that, they have no online ordering and...
  22. Gluten-free may have affected your other results; it may also be that the only one that would have ever been positive was EMA. You can't second-guess that. Four weeks is kind of fast for high antibodies to fall; it's possible you missed a low positive. You have to keep in mind that the ONLY way you could not have celiac disease (or at least be on the way...
  23. As Ravenwood said, you need to be on a full gluten diet (4 slices of bread worth a day) for three months before you can get an accurate test. I know going back to the fog is a terrible prospect; I opted not to get tested. You need to stand up for yourself better as far as your husband is concerned. Most spouses see the radical changes in a celiac off...
  24. Just came back from Disney World. They had Udi's buns in the burger joints and dedicated potato fryers. They have yummy smoked turkey drumsticks that are gluten-free too. I got gluten-free FISH AND CHIPS!!! at their Irish pub in Downtown Disney. They have a dedicated gluten-free fryer and the chef has worked out a great batter. Wolfgang Puck's had gluten...

    ARCHIVED IHOP

I'm a chicken. I order eggs hard-fried so I can see that there is egg and nothing else. A little bacon (I have never seen gluten in bacon) and gluten-free toast from my purse and I'm good to go. I'll do that at pretty much any greasy spoon.
