ARCHIVED What Happens If You 'backslide'
Skylark replied to BarryC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Kinnikinnick makes chocolate-covered gluten-free donuts. There is very little I would want to eat that I can't find gluten-free. It makes it much easier. -
ARCHIVED Testing For Celiace Disease After Blood Transfusion And Biopsy
Skylark replied to CHIGIRL's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and welcome to the board. That's quite a transfusion. Are you OK now? Antibodies are in your plasma so I agree with researchmomma that RBC should not affect the celiac test. -
ARCHIVED Can Celiac's Have Pro-Biotics?
Skylark replied to GFSAHmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Celiacs can have any gluten-free probiotic. The one you are looking at has bacteria plus natural carrot powder, microcrystalline cellulose, silica, gelatin and purified water so it would be safe. I don't know much in general about feeding probiotics to young children but they help me tremendously. I usually look for one with a wider variety of bacteria... -
I'm glad you found some clean meat. Bison is great because it's usually grass-fed as well as organic. I really hope you don't get corned from the onion powder. I'll tell you a secret about sublingual B12. There is a study showing no difference between oral and sublingual B12. Open Original Shared Link The health food store preparations are taking...

Quinoa with the saponin on it is definitely NOT food. I got a quinoa mix that apparently wasn't rinsed well enough. I was soooo tired that day putting the mix in a saucepan and boiling the water to cook it seemed like an effort. It was so bitter it was completely inedible and I had that same disappointment you did. Just remember that you'll probably...

ARCHIVED Ema Test Results Interpretation
Skylark replied to Nannu's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Tests have a ceiling, above which the numbers are unreliable. It's called the limit of quantitation. I don't now how to explain any better. Say the test only goes to 300ish. What if your daughter's "real" TTG readings were 500, 400, and 300, but the test keeps reading 300ish because it is at the limit of quantitation. Think of a car speedometer. It... -
I have two jars of coconut oil. One is Spectrum brand lightly refined, designed for moderate temperature cooking. It has almost no flavor. The other jar is Dr. Bronner's Extra virgin coconut oil and it has a light coconut flavor.

ARCHIVED Ema Test Results Interpretation
Skylark replied to Nannu's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi, Nannu You can't directly compare TTG and EMA. They are completely different sorts of tests. Did your daughter have EMA before? I was also wondering what the limit of quantitation is on the TTG test? You may have to ask the lab. Your daughter's numbers are quite high and I'm wondering if you're so close to the top of the test that you're not seeing... -
Glad the lists helped! The SCD lists are really useful for tummy trouble as long as you can eat fructose. As far as quinoa, Bob's Red Mill quinoa is pre-rinsed with no bitter taste at all. I like it better cooked in broth rather than water and you can dice up an onion in it. (I used to throw in a can of tomatoes but I don't tolerate them now.) That...

ARCHIVED Vitamins Helping With Anxiety!
Skylark replied to Macbre's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That's wonderful! Vitamins helped my bipolar illness so I know how good they can be. -
Corn reactions from ethylene gas? I don't think I'm ever going to complain about gluten being sneaky again. That's ridiculously difficult to deal with. I think you'll be fine low-protein for three weeks. You're not talking about a lifelong change. Once you get lentils in you can have lentils and rice for complete protein. So you know - I find...

ARCHIVED Food You Dont Have To Cook
Skylark replied to Fairy Dancer's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You really, really need to find the energy to cook. I know how hard it is because you are describing how I felt last fall. I felt a little better within a week or two of getting off dairy, enough better to keep cooking and eventually I figured out a nightshade sensitivity. Do something REALLY easy like throw a bunch of cut up chicken in your stew pot... -
ARCHIVED Ema Test Results Interpretation
Skylark replied to Nannu's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When EMA is tested, they dilute the blood serum and look for a response in the assay. The more they can dilute the serum and still get a response, the more antibodies there are. Your daughter had enough antibodies to be positive in the test at 1:10 and weakly positive at 1:20. Normal people do not show any results at 1:10. IFA stands for immunofluorescence... -
ARCHIVED What Happens If You 'backslide'
Skylark replied to BarryC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you're gluten intolerant I doubt you did any harm, other than the short-term effects. If you're celiac every time you consume gluten you give your body the opportunity to develop different auto-antibodies. We tend towards autoimmunity and gluten really seems to boost the process. Just keep on trying. The diet really does take some getting used... -

Skylark replied to Salima's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms

ARCHIVED Got My Results Today

Most doctors don't know enough about celiac disease to do that. The best way to get well is to learn to take a more active role in your care. -
ARCHIVED Genetic Question...
Skylark replied to Lizzylulu's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The incidence of celiac disease is rising in first-world countries, but not in poorer countries with similar genetics. Type 1 diabetes is rising too. The incidence of celiac genes has not changed in the general population, so there is something about our lifestyle that is triggering the autoimmunity. You are too worried about specific alleles that may... -

ARCHIVED Got My Results Today
Skylark replied to Jsny1010's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I didn't make myself clear. I'm not saying this doctor is good. He sounds like an absolute jerk. I'm wondering what the point is of getting another GI. Chances are good gluten-free/casein free will fix you. A GP can order vitamin D and B12 tests and it's a good idea to get them. If you are in the US you have a legal right to go to the office and... -
ARCHIVED Got My Results Today
Skylark replied to Jsny1010's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The gene test is not diagnostic. It only gives some statistics on how likely you are to be celiac. I don't understand why you would go to another doctor. Are you looking for permission to go on the diet? A diagnosis that will follow you around when you try to get insurance? Another doctor will not get you different test results. You are most likely... -
It is expensive. I'm lucky that I am in a big city with multiple sources for organic or at least antibiotic-free/hormone-free meat and plenty of organic produce. It still costs $16 to $20 for a single organic chicken. I'm wanting to dig a garden but I haven't quite been feeling up to it. Going off meat is not going to help your B12 status. Red...
