ARCHIVED Everyone Eats While I Watch: Your Honesty Needed, Please
eva-girl replied to Lynayah's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
ravenwoodglass - my point is that some -SOME- celiacs i have met in RL or have met through chatboards let celiac disease control their lives, to the point where they think everyone is against them or they have no control over what happens to them. that is a sad and lonely place to be. in the beginning, yes, it IS overwhelming and scary, and i remember... -
ARCHIVED Thought I Was Okay....

"The people working at McD's were questionable and I went through drive through and didn't say anything when I placed my order. Am I supposed to tell them I can't eat gluten or just assume? " i would never assume anything, anywhere is gluten-free unless you absolutely know for sure or you ask. admittedly, i've been accused of being something of a snob... -
first week! and then another. and then a month, and another month... and pretty soon this new way of eating will be second nature and will feel normal to you. and remember the better you feel with this diet the easier it is to maintain.

ARCHIVED Thought I Was Okay....

buffetbride - yeah - the "warming" areas of fast food places scare me - everything right next to each other. i just stay away from fast food altogether. if i'm going to be glutened it's going to be from something better than a chicken nugget! -
when i was a teenager i worked at mcdonald's, so i know whereof i speak. the kitchen was not the cleanest, most sanitary place. i also put myself through college waiting tables, and i am not maligning servers at all. in any case, i try to stay away from fast food because it is so full of sodium. if y'all have had good luck eating fast food, then that's great...

ARCHIVED Pre Sliced Fruits And Veggies

my mother always says about leftovers in the fridge: when in doubt, throw it out. i have ammended that for celiacs: when in doubt, go without. -

i have alot of thoughts about this post: 1. how does your hubby KNOW this place can't accomodate your needs? did he call them? if not, call the restaurant and ask them. is it where you are all going on vacation or is it in your town? i'm a bit confused on that point. in any case, i'd call the restaurant and speak to the manager. 2. i'm pretty certain... -
i am really shocked at how many celiacs eat fast food - y'all are braver than i am! i wouldn't eat at any fast food restaurant, ever - i just shudder at their menus with all the grease, fat and salt. plus, their kitchens are usually a disaster area. i really do not want 16 year olds who barely make minimum wage and have probably only worked there for about...

ARCHIVED Top Three Worst Gf Products
eva-girl replied to anerissara's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
most gluten free bread is not bread...it's just a sad, tasteless brick. i try not to replicate "gluten" foods too often, usually ends up with me swearing and throwing things. i eat alot of veggies and fruit, rice, chicken and fish. i find it's just less frustrating than trying to make gluten-free "bagels" or whatever. -
K8ling - i think that bbq sauce should "somehow" find its way into his briefcase or his sock drawer...upside down...with the lid off.

ARCHIVED Poll: If A Fairie Could Wave A Magic Wand...
eva-girl replied to rdunbar's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i think you are giving gluten way too much importance in your life. some people tolerate it just fine, others don't. that's like saying "bees are the devil" because some people are deathly allergic to bees. if i could wave a magic wand i would make my system able to tolerate gluten. sometimes i really, really miss fresh baked bread -
ARCHIVED How Do You Get Ur Family To Understand?
eva-girl replied to kkaysmiles's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
your husband sounds like he has control issues. has he always been this way? how does he react to your other ailments - does he think they are in your head, too? you can't force him to support you - just do what you need to do in order to stay healthy, regardless of what he thinks. this is your body, your life. if he can't be supportive than you need to find... -
ARCHIVED Trouble Walking In The Am
eva-girl replied to one more mile's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
it could be something much more simple - have you been to a podiatrist? i have the same problem and it is from plantar fasciatis in both feet. i do a better job of stretching my feet/legs now before i run and the pain & stiffness is so much better. or you may just need inlays for your shoes. hopefully yours is something easy like that. -
i love the idea of a picnic...food that you can control! kind of romantic, too. also, bars have non-alcoholic drinks, too; even if you don't drink you can still go there. what about bookstores? flea markets? skiing? snowshoeing? rollerblading? paint it yourself pottery places? there are lots of non-food related activities we can do, i don't care how small...

"What else do you do on a first date?" really? well, let's see: movie, cocktails, coffee, museums, exhibits, galleries, taking a walk in the park, bowling, billiards, miniature golf, taking in a play or live music, etc. my hubby and i had our first date at the dog park - we both have dogs and i had been in AA for 2 years and wasn't comfortable in a bar...

ARCHIVED Struggling With Coming To Terms With How Stupid I've Been
eva-girl replied to williamsburg000's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
don't beat yourself up - it will only make you feel worse. and remember, everyone, the average med student only has about about 8 hours of nutrition education. no wonder doctors don't know much about celiac, but it isn't really their fault; that's not how the western medical community is trained. it is what it is - no need to harbor alot of anger at them... -
what a story! i'm glad you are going on a second date - he sounds like a keeper. but why would a celiac go on a first date that involves food? that's alot of stress to put on yourself, especially when you are trying to make a good first impression. maybe your second date should be an art gallery or something. have fun!

ride all ways - if you are doubting your diagnosis and want to reintroduce a small amount of gluten to see what happens, by all means do so - that is part of the diet manipulation we all need to go through as part of our diagnosis. but from the tone and subject heading of your first post it sounds as if you are just craving the food, which is a different...

ARCHIVED Sitting Here About To Lose It
eva-girl replied to MartialArtist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
martial artist - you need to sit down with your family and have a serious talk - if you've already done it, do it again. your kids should be picking up after themselves, period. if they are old enough to open a box of cereal they are old enough to put it away. if you don't already have a designated shelf of your own in the kitchen you need to do it right... -
ride all ways - don't take this the wrong way, and i only say it because i think you need to hear it: asking others whether you should eat a mc chicken or asking them to "stop you" from eating something is really infantile. you need to take responsibility for your health, nobody else. you will either choose to eat gluten or you will choose not to - only...

ARCHIVED How Do I Explain?
eva-girl replied to elawphoto's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
magpie - i like the steely hauteur image...need to work on that myself! i guess my tactic is proactive avoidance, not being defensive. like at a potluck i will take some of the hummus/gluten-free dip/whatever and put it on my plate - that way i don't have to worry about people dipping gluten crackers into the wrong dip. at the holidays i get in line... -
kimis - keep it simple. i just say "i don't eat gluten because i can't digest it and it makes me sick" and i move on. i don't spend any more time than that on it. i see no need to give long lectures, medical terminology, in-depth reviews of bowel movements etc. to people who are probably going to be unsupportive anyway. if they really want to help me and...

ARCHIVED How Do I Explain?
eva-girl replied to elawphoto's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
i realize this is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but why do so many celiacs spend so much time & energy trying to explain, explain, explain celiac disease to skeptics? after 2 years of being gluten-free, my response is easy: "i don't eat gluten, i can't digest it, it makes my stomach hurt." that's where it ends. no lectures, no handouts, no... -
ARCHIVED How To Awkwardly Admit That Actually, You're Not Eating X
eva-girl replied to AKcollegestudent's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
i think he was just trying to be nice...at least he wanted to hear more about it instead of practically forcing food down your throat or looking at you like you've lost your mind. don't beat around the bush: just say "i'm not hungry" (firmly but nicely) and leave it at that. i find that when i hem and haw that's when people start trying to cajole me into...
