  1. I love to travel too but what's the point if one can't eat anything.....do you just eat what you can and enjoy the scenery? I want to eat what the country has to offer..whine, whine.

  2. I will be having a tropical smoothie. When I make smoothies I use milk as the liquid rather than juice for a thick, milkshake-like concoction. I also add ground flax seed.
  3. OK - am driving home this evening to cook. I will be making comfort food: James Beard's Homestyle Meatloaf Roasted Garlic Potato Puree with Caramelized Shallots White Wine Braised Brussels Sprouts Caramel Pudding
  4. It is a lovely getaway - large log house, stone fireplace - as easy as it gets. And the snow is melting a bit today so it is warm outside! Mark Bittman is a credible cook and food writer. Thanks for posting the photo - it surely about the same size as our Croatia kitchen! Makes me feel better. Our Canada house's kitchen is gigantic so I am quite...
  5. Great idea. The flavour may not be as intense but if that does not bother you I think you should try it. However, they may be too liquidy because canned figs and mascerated figs are quite different things. As long as it is a thick paste (like tapenade as mentioned in the recipe) you will be fine. Perhaps use mostly canned figs and use a few dried figs...
  6. The other day I read that someone mentioned missing fig newtons and wanted a gluten-free version. Well, here is one of the closest you will likely get to the real thing. Open Original Shared Link
  7. Welcome here! I live three hours from Edmonton and drive there regularly to go to lovely restaurants and to pick up specialty food ingredients from T&T and the Italian Centre and several little ethnic shops. So, my husband and I know Edmonton well. Silencio lives in Edmonton - he will likely see this, too. Initially it does seem like gluten is...
  8. Tiny kitchens do make a difference - I know. Our kitchen in Croatia is the size of a closet and it stresses me to cook in it. So we do almost all our cooking/grilling/baking outside. I think you are doing very well in spite of your tiny kitchen! Oh, and my wording of dinner was unclear. Before I came out here to housesit I made up the potatoes...
  9. Today I will be making myself Eggs Benedict with some lovely local ham and orange-yolked eggs and my guilty pleasure (well, one of them) hollandaise. But I did not bring any English muffins with me (I am housesitting out of town) so I will use homemade bread instead.
  10. Although I make my own pizza these look like fun, even for a casual dinner party. They would be excellent with sweet potatoes as well.
  11. Still away from home and am cooking for myself: Ricotta Gnocchi with Browned Butter and Crispy Sage Rosemary Roasted Radishes
  12. Happened upon this today. This may be a fun treat for some who are able to have the ingredients and do not feel like making pizza crust... Open Original Shared Link
  13. Still away from home, housesitting so do not have all my stuff accessible. I am very limited but am making: Twice-Stuffed Potatoes with Pancetta and Smoked Gouda Seared Pork Chop with Pomegranate Reduction Cucumber Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette
  14. I use some psyllium fibre and gelatin in my bread and have not had any loaves fall. Are you using the proper size of pan? Some recipes call for 8x4, some 9x4. That one inch makes a big difference. Do you bake the bread to an internal temperature of about 190-200?
  15. Guess what? Chances are good that the reflux will discontinue once you have been off gluten for awhile. All sorts of wondrous things can happen once you are gluten free. For some it takes a few weeks to notice, some a few months, and a few longer than that. The first while is very difficult. I remember!! Once I had it under control and it did...
  16. Very interesting, IH. This problem is so beyond my understanding. Just saw my doctor today and he is so knowledgable and aware as I mentioned before. This time my BP didn't go up too badly when he walked into the room!
  17. Had both done and was a little sore a few days later but other than that I was fine. However, I was warned that many suffer with severe gas for a bit after (following the colonoscopy). I was one of the lucky ones.
  18. How is all this possible? As I read through the posts it sounds as though you have been living in a nightmare. Are the doctor duds from all over the world gathered together and shipped to the US?
  19. Good! The market is huge, even in winter. We'll be there in two weeks to pick up more goods from Irvine Farms amongst other stuff. If you are into Asian food/cooking, T&T is wonderful. Just a tip - should you ever need white rice flour, it is better to buy at an Asian store as it is finer, not to mention cheaper. We know Edmonton quite...
  20. You and me both. However, you can make your own potstickers! They are incredible. Sounds as though you are really into Asian cooking so you would really like "The Gluten Free Asian Kitchen". Excellent scratch recipes including your own nuoc cham, teriyaki sauce, potstickers...
  21. I purchase my grits (very coarse - not instant) at a Mexican store. Delicious!
  22. Banana bread infused with lemon simple syrup. Strawberries.
  23. I make my own nearly everything - ketchups, mustards, salsas, jams, jellies, sauces, preserves, seasoning blends, pesto (many kinds), vinegars, marinades, vinaigrettes, rubs, baked beans, ladyfingers, tortillas, tacos, vanilla extract, nutella. Pretty much all except soy sauce, Worcestershire and sriracha. I make my own ricotta and creme fraiche. If you...
  24. I hope you get to the market and enjoy the sausages as much as we do. Irvine also supplies pork for a few of the top restaurants in Edmonton. Cumberlands are our favourites followed by the brats. We also buy back bacon and ham from him. At the market there is a gluten-free baking vendor! They sell lots of yummy gluten-free treats. The market is...
  25. I really enjoy making spring rolls. They are so easy yet taste complicated. I love that you can make hundreds of fillings and sauces. They are so versatile! People would be amazed at how well those with celiac can eat. The meal you just mentioned is naturally gluten free but some do not think of it that way.
