  1. Yes, the economy is very good. There is a lot of money floating around, that is for sure! Very transient and very, very wealthy. But very, very cold! Often we see major storms in the St. John's area on TV and are grateful for where we live until we go outside. We had rain a few weeks ago and the streets are sheer ice and likely will be now for the...
  2. How about jello aquariums? Just make some blue jello, pour into clear plastic cups and when almost set add cool things such as gummy fish or blue whales. How about corn tortilla wraps filled with their favourite yummy things? Ice cream sandwiches - just make some chocolate chip cookies and fill with slightly-softened ice cream and freeze.
  3. Baked potatoes about 1,000 ways! Just roast and stuff with all sorts of things included veg, onion, cheese, sour cream, chives, bacon or top with tuna salad, herbed butter or even baked beans as is done in the UK (jacket potatoes). Very easy to make in advance and freeze and reheat. I know you already do lots of eggs but how about Eggs Benedict or omelettes...
  4. In northern Alberta. The funny thing is, nothing shuts down - everyone is expected to continue going to work, school, whatever. Our vehicle tires become square and thump when driving until they warm up; skin can freeze in 90 seconds. It can be downright dangerous! Blech.
  5. I know - sometimes we think we are quite insane. We cannot wait to move to Croatia! The Mediterranean climate is certainly a far cry from this frigid barren giant ice cube!
  6. Yep! The MINUS 37 does not include windchill which can make it feel far worse. The coldest temperature we had was -51F and with windchill -65F. Not so good.
  7. Before we hit Slovakia we picked up lots of supplies. We did not eat out much there - sorry it was so hard! Have you been to Croatia? I find it to be quite a lot easier than Slovakia. Slovenia is ok, too. Parts of Croatia (esp. Istria) do tons of grilling fresh fish and not much deep frying (none at good restaurants). Man, I love central and eastern...
  8. On our most recent visit to an Asian store we got eight different kinds of noodles including cellophane, green bean, sweet potato, mung bean, green pea - they are so inexpensive and lovely and, best of all, gluten free.
  9. Friday Night: Seared Scallops with Vanilla Bean Aioli Smoked and Seared Duck Breast to a perfect medium rare Parsnip Puree Beet Coulis Goat Cheese Mousse Pickled Shallots Earl Grey Pot de Creme It was absolutely sublime!
  10. Guess what our high is for Monday? MINUS 37 F. Now that is brrrrrr....
  11. Hi! I, too, was diagnosed with FMS and was prescribed Ultram 50 and titrated up to 200 mg. When I took 200 mg it slightly took the edge off but barely. Thankfully I had zero side effects but it was like taking candy as far as results went. But much of my pain results from an accident four years ago and subsequent muscle wasting due to inactivity. I am...
  12. I am rejoicing today because I have had FOUR consecutive days where my chronic pain has been about a 4/10 which has not happened for a couple of years. Four whole days! Sure, I still hurt a lot but I can do more for longer! I was able to sit for half an hour yesterday. YAY! My doctor started me on a muscle relaxant and analgesic combo that is actually...
  13. Without question gluten. I still miss the elasticity and texture that gluten adds to croissants, fresh breads, bagels, rolls, puff pastry, etc. You should see my bakery library that I can no longer use, including my beloved gigantic culinary school baking textbooks. Thankfully I have some decent gluten-free recipes for dough that I can actually roll out...
  14. Funny! Sometimes I do have Chex for breakfast! We eat whatever we want but in moderation - that is the key. We eat on smaller plates and I cook things in a very healthy way whenever possible. We eat a lot of raw fruit and vegetables and an incredibly varied diet. I could easily cook three meals a day for an entire year (actually, longer) without doubling...
  15. I have been to Italy many times and most recently in November. It it is known to be one of the best countries for celiac awareness. We were told that it is mandatory for each person to be tested for celiac by the age of six. So, your son won't get blank stares at restaurants. Sorry that I cannot help with chains as I do not go to them but he can look...
  16. We had much of the same tonight except I added steamed broccoli to the mix. The blueberry ketchup is amazing! It is almost like a savoury jam that would go so well with wild duck or venison, too.
  17. This is a good light biscuit recipe. I use buttermilk instead of soy. Open Original Shared Link
  18. Man, I am so with you! I was diagnosed with FMS, too, and hurt all over all of the time. But much of my pain is due to an accident four years ago. And I know that part of it is due to celiac as well. My heart aches for family members who I am absolutely certain have celiac but do not want to do anything about it (not that I am a doctor but we get to...
  19. The inconvenience of eating at others' homes or at food festivals/fairs. Eating out at restaurants is not difficult for me as I never eat at fast food places or chains. I find that high-end restaurants are far better equipped and knowledgable, not to mention serve vastly superior food! My husband and I used to plan our trips to Europe around food...
  20. So true! I love that we are able to eat just as well, if not even BETTER than the gluten fiends!
  21. Momofuku Ginger Scallion Noodles Roast Pork Balls Stuffed with Scallions and Garlic served with Bibb Lettuce Cups Homemade Nuoc Cham and Blueberry "Ketchup" for sauces
  22. How great! I so enjoy making pasta and potstickers with all sorts of delicious fillings.
  23. I made some gorgeous focaccia yesterday so will be having it in sandwich form with honey ham, Provolone and pistachio mint pesto I made in the fall. As I am trying to clean our our freezers I will also be having a smoothie with blueberries, strawberries and raspberries.
  24. Oh, how delectable! It would be worth flying to Scotland for that! Please post your experience - I would love to hear how it went.
