  1. Sounds like you should get your gallbladder checked out? The HIDA scan the others mentioned sounds good. Do you get nausea with the pain? Pain worse after eating fatty foods? Pain less when you eat non-fatty foods? My mom had a severely infected gall bladder, she suffered for a few months with on-and-off pain and doctors couldn't say what it was...
  2. Hey, I can really relate to this, because I also feel like a skeleton at times. At least I'm female, so it's nowadays attractive to be showing bones, but it still gets to me. It *really* gets to me. But I'm starting to realise it's not going to change anytime soon, I'm not going to magically gain 10KGs and look like a "normal" person. I'm going to have...
  3. Oh man, I've had those days :/ Usually when I've just eaten the wrong thing and feeling sick, depressed and useless. Just this week was thinking how am I going to continue with this ridiculous diet for the rest of my life. And then I woke up this morning feeling a bit better, and my stomach hasn't "said a word", so getting some relief from my issues. ...
  4. Welcome, I hope you get some firm results from the blood test and endoscopy. Please do post your results, we can help explain them if the doctor isn't being helpful. Also I hope the doctor has requested the full celiac blood test panel? Yes, diarrhea and chronic fatigue are classic signs, with or without weight loss. Most doctors just look out for...
  5. Welcome to the board, and congrats in getting a firm diagnosis of celiac disease - not that it's a great diagnosis, but now you know what's wrong with you at least Yup, this happened to me as well. Before going gluten-free my symptoms were pretty random - I could eat a pizza and feel fine afterward. Now that I'm gluten-free, eating even a spoonful...
  6. Thanks for your responses, it looks like I'll just have to use trial and error. I'll ask them about the oak casks, thanks! I had a panic attack last night, so it looks like it was definitely gluten from a source, if not the liqueur then something else. My poor sore stomach after the drink, tells me it was probably the liqueur. Might try Bailey...
  7. I'd go with them being on auto-pilot with these things - other people just don't think about what they do with their forks and what they eat. While we're always double, triple checking what we do around food, they just go *nom* Don't get massively upset, but don't be silent about the issue. It is very frustrating though... As your girlfriend gets...
  8. Good grief these guys are thorough and quick to reply!! It's definitely still gluten-free, must be some other weird intolerance or something else affecting me. They even checked with the supplier of their caramel colour and bottle it on lines with other gluten-free drinks. Response from Amarula : In answer to your query below please find the following...
  9. Since I'm from South Africa, I've only got the local drinks as examples, but maybe it applies globally as well. I had some Amarula liqueur last night after determining with a internet search that it's "gluten-free". It's made from cream and marula fruit. It's fermented using "pure yeast cultures" and then distilled in oak barrels. I have sent then a...
  10. You mentioned gluten-free bread and soya - you might want to leave those out for a few days and see if it makes a difference. Many gluten-intolerants/celiacs are also intolerant to soya. Gluten-free bread may have trace amounts of gluten cc, or you may be intolerant to some grains while you're still healing. It's always a good idea to keep a food diary...
  11. No problem, I had assumed it was gluten-free :/ Do they specifically add wheat starch/flour to the meal, or is it more of a CC risk? Wondering if I need to watch out myself for these items. The "polenta" I have is just plain uncooked mashed up corn pieces, it should be safe for me, I hope...
  12. It's the "Oh thank goodness I don't have to give this up" look :/ I hate the "I don't think I could *ever* give up my bread" comments - um, yes you could if it was making you sick as a dog
  13. I'd suggest going and not eating/drinking anything (Just say you're not feeling well). If you react, then it's to the flour in the air (or possibly touching something on the table and then touching your mouth or something), and then the only thing you can do is tell them. You might find a few fellow sufferers if they know Not sure if they'd change...
  14. Is the pain in her ribs or underneath from the intestines? Just wondering if you had an ultrasound done to check for gallstones - that can be hellava painful, usually worse after eating something fatty, and with nausea. If it's in the ribs, chances are it's costochondritis, I get that after gluten accidents and it's pretty painful Some other ideas...
  15. I'm glad to see you and Raven refer to yourselves as celiacs (Edit - lol, hopefully that's the correct place to use the plural!) - I want to do that too, but since my tests were negative I felt bad referring to myself as having celiac disease. Although in my head I think of it as such. I find saying "gluten-intolerant" doesn't convey the serious of...
  16. I second the grain idea - try skip the gluten-free flours for a while and see if it helps. Even "naturally gluten-free" flours can be contaminated with gluten from shared equipment, and some people even react to the certified < 5ppm gluten free flours. Are you making the biscuits on a non-stick tray that you use before with gluten-containing biscuits...
  17. Maybe it's just a stomach bug that you've picked up? Especially if it's from a "trusted" source, and your symptoms are much worse/longer than they usually are. If it is gluten, it can take several days to recover especially if it was a big hit. You can get a lot more sensitive over time. Hope you feel better soon!

I have a "window shopping" policy on gluten containing foods - look, smell but don't touch Poor consolation, but I know if I eat the item I'm going to get a sore stomach within minutes - I can literally enjoy the item a lot more just by taking in the aroma. Of course some people get sick on fumes, so maybe not such a good idea for you. Gluten-free...
  19. One way to avoid the dipped spoon situation is to look like a hungry soul and dish up for yourself first Preferably as lids are being taken off dishes/put out on the table etc. That way family can share spoons amongst the food to their heart's content. CC is a great pain, I must admit
  20. You should be able to tolerate more once you've healed, but everyone's different This is more to eliminate trace amounts of gluten bothering you - once you've got a safe list of food and not feeling nauseous all the time, you can start trying to add more variety of foods to your diet. I'd recommend adding one new item a week, eating it every day, so that...
  21. Eeeps, if you're using supplement drinks, please consider blending your own mix. Soy is often a big problem, and I tried a "gluten-free" supplement with soy in it - made me horribly nauseous, sore stomach, the works! For elimination diets - you're free to eat as much as you like of the "safe" items, so don't worry about removing lots of items from your...
  22. Oh wow, this story should be sticky-ed. Thanks so much for posting this, and so sorry to hear you found out so late about gluten. I'm sure many people wish their doctor had mentioned or suggested trying going gluten-free earlier. I also just stumbled upon the idea via the web. I think something random I saw made me think of celiac disease. I even have...
  23. Hi there, For the nausea - I found after going gluten free, I used to get nauseous at the same time every day. Cut out a few foods to experiment, and eventually found out nightshades were making me nauseous. It was quite severe, and worse the bigger alkaloid hit I got - raw green/red pepper was the worst, followed by tomatoes and potato. It only started...
  24. Trying desperately to figure this out. I'm keeping a food diary, and it seems that I'm getting same or next day reactions to gluten. However when I started out on the gluten-free diet, my "food challenges" indicated more of a 4 or 5 day reaction. For example, a few months ago: Semolina breakfast, I'd feel fine on the day (no reaction, maybe a sore stomach...
  25. Hey hey, don't panic My husband still enjoys a fully gluten-ized diet, you just have to be very, very careful in your kitchen. If he's having something with gluten, I'll prepare my gluten-free food first, put it away somewhere safe from crumbs and then prepare his food. I always make sure to wash my hands very thoroughly afterward to avoid cross...
