ARCHIVED Trader Joe's gluten-free Cookies
Monklady123 replied to silk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lol. I just posted yesterday about these cookies. Without reading down the rest of the board. Sorry about that. I was just SO excited to find these cookies because they are so good. -
I can't comment on the endoscopy because I haven't had one. I refuse to do a gluten challenge when I know how awful I feel when I'm glutened by just a little bit. But about the diet -- it is overwhelming, and it isn't. If you think about it every single food item is naturally gluten free except for wheat, barley, and rye. And oats often. But everything...

ARCHIVED Trader Joe's Chocolate Chip Cookies!
Monklady123 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Along with my wonderful pepperoni pizza (see my previous post about Kinnickkinnick (sp?) pizza crust) I have Trader Joe's "Crispy Crunchy Chocolate Chip Cookies". omg... I am in heaven this evening. Nice glass of wine with my pizza, some milk and cookies for dessert. What else could a girl ask for? lol. -
ARCHIVED Omg! Kinnickkinnick Pizza Crusts!
Monklady123 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Where have these been all my gluten free life? My pizza was actually edible! lol... Compared to, say, the Amy's frozen thing I had a few weeks ago. gag... I found them at my new Trader Joe's, in case anyone else is looking. -
I'm glad to read this thread today because now that winter is here I'm spending one evening a week in Starbucks. My dd dances for 2 hours one night a week and we live just far enough away that it's not worth dropping her, driving home, then driving back to pick her up. In the warm weather I sit in the park, or get a coke from the hamburger place and sit at...

I'm visiting my parents and my mom, dd and I went out to lunch at Eat 'n Park because I had heard they were aware of gluten. Sure enough, on the back of their menu they have a whole page of allergy info, including a list of what is gluten free on the menu. They also have gluten free sandwich buns, although I didn't have one. So on the menu were their...

ARCHIVED Holiday Successes And Failures
Monklady123 replied to thleensd's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had ham, scalloped potatoes (crockpot), green beans with almonds, broccoli, a relish plate (olives, raw veggies, etc.), cranberry sauce for my two must-have-cranberries-at-every-holiday-meal people, brownies with chocolate chips in them and with chocolate frosting, apple pie, and cherry pie. Every single thing was gluten free and they didn't even know it... -
As far as I know there is no exclusively gluten free bakery in this area. Sweet Sin is in Baltimore. Lillit in Bethesda, MD does sell their products, as do most Whole Foods. Heidelberg Bakery in Arlington, VA has a WONDERFUL chocolate raspberry cake that's gluten free, but the bakery isn't. Some of the other local bakeries will have some gluten free products...

ARCHIVED Well-Meaning People Who Are Always Pushing Food!
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This post actually sort-of fits under the "can you eat this?" post, but I didn't want to hijack her thread. My church has had a four-week Advent study immediately following Sunday worship. We had lunch each week. The first two weeks the woman who brought it went to the grocery store and got those sandwich platters. She also bought several kinds of cheese... -
ARCHIVED "can You Eat This? What About That?"
Monklady123 replied to New Community Member's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
  The funny thing is that there *are* gluten free kibbles! My dog's food says "gluten free". heehee.. But, I agree that I wouldn't want to be asked that! -
Everything else that they eat is gluten-free, since most foods are naturally gluten-free. But I do cook their pasta, and I do bake regular stuff for them from time to time. But it's always using a mix (I hate to cook or bake, lol) so I'm not dealing with sifting flour, etc. I've never had a reaction from it so I don't mind. The reason I don't cook gluten...

Yes, pasta was the one thing I did that with several times before I managed to get over it. I think the pasta thing is more automatic than anything else I do in the kitchen... I mean, I never automatically added flour to things (I always used cornstarch even before celiac because it doesn't get lumpy like flour does), and I've never tasted my kids sandwiches...

ARCHIVED Lettuce For Lunch At Hospital Event.
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, I do understand about people wanting to accommodate us. And food is so much a part of being "hospitable". But what gets me is that this is a hospital! I've only been gluten free for a bit more than a year so I've never had experience with a hospital since my diagnosis. I guess I just expect hospitals to be experienced in diet for various conditions.... -
ARCHIVED Lettuce For Lunch At Hospital Event.
Monklady123 posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm doing a fellowship at a local hospital, two semesters. We finished the first semester this past week and we had a small "graduation" service. (a few people are not continuing on to the next unit.) Lunch was part of it. So a few weeks ago the director of program asked me what I wanted to eat for the lunch. He said that the director of the food service... -
ARCHIVED Accidentally Glutened Myself
Monklady123 replied to Duhlina's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I can relate to that. sigh... When I first went gluten free I bought myself some cookies. Newman's I think, they look like Oreos. The package says WHEAT FREE in big letters. So I ate a few. Only later, after I had a reaction, did I read the much smaller letters that said "not gluten free." Well, if nothing else, it was a confirmation that... -
ARCHIVED My Starbucks Saga Continues...
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Okay, I take it back about feeling fine. Over the course of this morning I've developed that awful gluten headache. I'm 100% positive it wasn't anything I ate yesterday because it was all made here at home. Oatmeal (gluten free, and I eat it all the time so I know it's fine) with milk, an apple, a Glutino cereal bar, a salad (eaten at work but brought from... -

ARCHIVED My Starbucks Saga Continues...
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well I woke up this morning feeling perfectly fine. So either it was the skinny latte that I got the first time, or just some cc. sigh... wish I hadn't fogotten that I got the skinny version! Anyone know off-hand what else uses sucralose? I might try that little experiment and see what happens. Off to google sucralose. edited to add: I... -
ARCHIVED My Starbucks Saga Continues...
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well...I'll see if I have any reaction from this not-skinny latte. Then I'll try the skinny one next week. Or find something else with sucralose in it. I never use artificial sweeteners of any kind, except for that diet coke (which is actually about half and half, half diet and half regular cherry coke). We will see... sure did taste good though. -
Don't know if you remember my question last week about the Starbucks peppermint mocha lattes. I had that awful gluteny headache last week after I had the skinny one. I called the company and they had no idea of the ingredients. (which is odd, but that would be a different post.) Anyway, so I'm sitting in Starbucks right now, finishing my peppermint...

ARCHIVED Holiday Party At Work Today
Monklady123 replied to Marilyn R's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ugh! I hope you end up not getting glutened. I have one big party coming up but fortunately it's at someone's house, and lots of people, with food set out on several different tables. So it's very easy for me to eat at home (we only live three blocks away), then walk around the party with a drink in my hand. I'll nibble at the veggies maybe. I'm doing... -
ARCHIVED Question About Starbucks Skinny Peppermint Latte
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, actually I should do that with the extracts. They keep for a long time, so I could have a peppermint coffee even in July! Great idea! -
ARCHIVED Question About Starbucks Skinny Peppermint Latte
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, for now I found my solution. (although I will ask to see the syrup ingredients the next time I'm at that Starbucks.) My dh came home yesterday with a small "frother" thing... not sure what it's called, but it's a manual one -- you put the milk in and pump the handle and the milk froths. Then I found International Delight peppermint/mocha coffee creamer... -
ARCHIVED Why Do Some People Feel They *must* Have An Endoscopy?
Monklady123 replied to Monklady123's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We always have a choice. It's your body. Even with a broken bone you have a choice. Wouldn't recommend choosing not to set a broken bone though. But we always have choices in medical care. -
ARCHIVED The Hair Is Gone Now, But I Dont Have To Shave My Legs!
Monklady123 replied to bonnie blue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, that's a great "silver lining" to chemo. No shaving. Also, since you're having chemo in the winter you can wear hats. (I'm assuming you live in a cold climate since you mentioned a hat...) I had mine beginning in November (years ago) so I just wore hats all the time until my hair came back. But if it had been in the summer I would have had to think...
