ARCHIVED Help! Egg Free....
scarlett77 replied to darkhorse's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ahhh didn't know it had corn in it. Learn something new everyday. I've read that pineapple & lemon juice are also binders as well as guar gum (again not sure about whether or not you can have this). But careful since fruit may flavor your recipes just like the bananas did. Interestingly chia seeds are also supposed to be a good binder for things like... -
ARCHIVED Help! Egg Free....
scarlett77 replied to darkhorse's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Have you tried Ener-G egg replacer? If that doesn't work for you then you may have to find replacement on a recipe type basis. Eggs are very versatile so they perform different functions in different recipes. Sometimes they are binders, sometimes they are a levener, etc. For cakes, it is a levening agent so I would experiment with soda drinks. I will have... -

ARCHIVED All 3 Kids Diagnosed
scarlett77 replied to ProudMommyDebbie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow, you are such a great, strong, loving mama/wife! Give yourself a pat on the back. Missymom gave some great ideas. I would also advise to stick with naturally gluten-free foods instead of specialty ones if you can help it. Nachos is cheap and easy. Use Mission corn tortillas to make your own chips and ground beef, black or pinto beans, tomatoes or salsa... -
ARCHIVED Brand New Here, Please Help
scarlett77 replied to Mommy2GlutenFreeChild's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Don't feel bad. This is a huge learning curve for everyone and anyone who is, may be, or has children or relatives with gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease. Everyone makes mistakes. I would caution against going strictly by packaging that says "Gluten Free" on it. There aren't really clear and strict regulations put on that type of label so many people... -
ARCHIVED Cosmetics, Anyone?
scarlett77 replied to Melissaann829's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Try Smashbox for mascara. I know for sure that the BIONIC has gluten so AVOID that one, but I think the Lash DNA is gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED Cosmetics, Anyone?
scarlett77 replied to Melissaann829's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've heard it does make a difference to get gluten-free cosmetics. I personally do use gluten-free for face, cheeks, and lips because it is my son who is Celiac, not me. I don't want to gluten him if he kisses me with makeup on. I have heard that quite a bit of Clinique is NOT gluten-free so that may be your problem. I use mostly Bare Minerals, Smashbox,... -
ARCHIVED Am I The Only Gluten Girl?
scarlett77 replied to Melissaann829's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You are likely not the only one in your family. Yes, everyone should get tested but that doesn't mean they will. This is one of those autoimmune diseases that if people aren't feeling sick they just don't want to know about it. My nephew has had some extreme issues with bowels ever since I can remember. My SIL (his mom) and 2 more of her children also... -
ARCHIVED Trying Not To Get Discouraged
scarlett77 replied to Sarah B's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dixiebell gave some good ones. Also Nature Valley came out with a new Gluten free "granola" bar which is basically all nuts and it is very yummy. I second the Pamela's mini chocolate chip cookies. I think they taste almost like Mother's. There aren't a whole lot of other cookies that I like that you can buy...to me they mostly taste too sweet or grainy. But... -
ARCHIVED Another Newbie Looking For Advice :)
scarlett77 replied to tankgirlwa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
To be quite honest I heard the exact opposite that loose stools is more common, but in reality both constipation AND loose stool are symptoms. My son had both, but he was more often constipated because he also has low thyroid which apparently was causing the constipation. I would ask for a Celiac panel as the next step as well as a RAST. Both of those tests... -
ARCHIVED Wanting To Re-Create The Lunchables Cold Pizzas?
scarlett77 replied to aggrolounge's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You could also try Chebe. Depending on how thin you make the crust it would be crunchier thinner. Easy to make, handles well and you can bake it OR grill it (I prefer grilling). You can also use Chebe mix to make crackers. -

Also check lotions, soaps, etc for her AND the rest of the family. Check YOUR makeup and hair care products (particularly any sprays). For example if your lipstick isn't gluten-free and she's giving you kisses, she will likely ingest some. Kids are notorious for putting things in their mouths (especially their own hands) so anything the touch has a chance... -
ARCHIVED How To Heal A Childs Gut/intestines
scarlett77 replied to shaleen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The only way to heal is by diet. It will take awhile though so start very basic and then add new foods. I can't remember the name of the actual diet, but if you ever breastfed it is very similar to an elimination diet. -
ARCHIVED Gluiten Free Wedding Cake
scarlett77 replied to LisaStephensonCeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't personally have any bakery recommendations, but another idea is to have one cake for your guests and then make your own cake for you and hubby for the cake cutting. Or if you know anyone with a passion for baking or decorating enlist them to use your kitchen and make it. It looks like the closest bakeries I have found to you are near Boise, ID... -
ARCHIVED Hair Spray
scarlett77 replied to bincongo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have heard Paul Mitchell has a gluten-free hairspray, but I have not checked it out myself since I've never been a fan of PM products. I typically don't use hairspray so it hasn't been too important for me to really look. I have a can of Shaper 0g that "looks" OK, but I haven't used it unless I really needed to and was going to be away from my Celiac son... -

Mission makes the "Kirkland Signature" tortilla chips which is just a huge bag of the regular Mission corn tortilla strips. They are made on dedicated lines. -

ARCHIVED Experiment Or Not
scarlett77 replied to scarlett77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's not so much about the fries or a treat...just the McD's got me thinking about knowing a reaction when I saw it. Kind of like when you first give your little one peanut butter for the first time to see how/if they react. I mean peanut butter is quite healthy, but if you are allergic it can be deadly. So my question was really if you don't KNOW and aren... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed Last Week
scarlett77 replied to cmathews03's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I found what helped me was to think about all the "normal" meals I like and then google them + "gluten free" ("Gluten free Mongolian Beef" for example). Usually there are at least a few that will pop up. Baking is a bit trickier than cooking because the flours behave a bit differently. Tell your friend to go check out the "Gluten Free Goddess" (google it... -
ARCHIVED Experiment Or Not
scarlett77 replied to scarlett77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I appreciate all your responses. Thank you. I do want to clarify a few points. I do buy frozen fries/tater tots occasionally and sometimes I do make them. That was an very interesting recipe I may have to try that sometime. We do live by an In& Out and do go there occasionally (but anyone will agree the fries are totally not the same). I am aware that... -
ARCHIVED Experiment Or Not
scarlett77 replied to scarlett77's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You make a very valid point that a gluten reaction from him may not be the same every time he is glutened. I guess my issue is that I can't tell when he has had a reaction to anything. I though I could, but I have been doubting myself lately. He is generally a mild mannered child and it is not really apparent when he isn't feeling good. Part of this is because... -
I hate the idea really but I think I have come to the conclusion that I just cannot tell when my son might have had a gluten reaction. Would any of you knowingly give your child gluten to see what his reaction would be for the sole purpose of identifying it in the future? My son was diagnosed just before his 2nd birthday (he's now almost 3). What led us...

ARCHIVED Fries- Fast Food Chains
scarlett77 replied to munchkinette's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I'm wondering if I should give McD's a try again. I had done research awhile back and decided that McD's fries were OK and so let my son have them (which was his absolute favorite treat). After a couple of months I saw that his improvement had stopped and thought maybe it was the fries (although it could really have been a number of other things). It is incredibly... -
ARCHIVED Need A Really Awesome Cookie Recipe!
scarlett77 replied to mommyto3's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I second this! I use Pamela's baking mix (along with the recipe) and I use butter flavored crisco instead of butter. I would highly suggest using it or the 1/2 butter & 1/2 shortening/crisco because it helps to make sure your cookies don't spread too thin. I roll the dough into balls and place on a cookie sheet. I also use M&M's on occasion with this... -

I don't know about one small enough to fit in your purse (or actually I guess that depends on the size of the purse-lol) but try Triumph. I don't think it is legal to post the link but google "triumph Dining guide" and it should point you to the right place. They also have a grocery guide and handy cards to take to restaurants.
