  1. Corn tortillas (like Mission) are usually found on an end cap (end of the aisle facing the perimeter of the store) with the flour tortillas in regular grocery stores. Just ask where the tortillas are and they should be able to point them out. I've honestly never even seen anything labeled "Tapioca Flour" only starch...but you can usually tell it is a...
  2. This hits home with me too. Our son is confirmed Celiac and looking at our family histories it could have come from either or both of us. Until recently I've thought it more than likely that he may have it and I'm pretty darned sure there are a few people in his family with severe stomach/bowel issues that have it. We did pass along the info to all the family...
  3. Have you tried giving him pediasure? Also drinkable yogurt is a good. Which cereals are have you tried? My boys like the Chex (particularly the Cinnamon, Chocolate, and Honey Nut). I've heard that Fruity Pebbles is gluten-free also. My Celiac son was very picky and actually reverted back to an almost all liquid diet. It took some time for him to start getting...
  4. It is a good idea to keep an emergency food kit in the car of relatively non-perishable items for these types of situations. As far as In&Out goes...tell them that you have a wheat allergy and watch the windows. They usually get it and make sure that your order is separated, but there are occasions when we have caught them CCing. On those occasions we...
  5. Well gosh darn it help a girl out here! Super easy gluten-free REALLY good focaccia??? I'm drooling in anticipation of a recipe...if of course you don't mind posting it :P
  6. *Sigh* someday I hope to open up a gluten-free cookie shop and become the "gluten-free Mrs. Fields"...alas way too much capital for my broke a$$. Whole Foods kills me when we go...all that good food and my son can't eat it Smells hella good in there though. San Rafael is a bit far for me to go grocery shopping but hoepfully that is the start of...
  7. As much as I have loved BJ's food their service has ALWAYS been crappy so I would NEVER trust them at all.
  8. My question would be do you FEEL better on a gluten free diet? It may be that with all the rest of the stuff that gluten just may be harsh on your digestive system, not necessarily Celiac. I think at this point gluten may do you more harm than good. Personally, if you feel better gluten-free than do it. While I agree a gluten free diet is a PITA, I think...
  9. Thinking about you and your family today...I hope all went well and you get results soon!
  10. Maybe it is my personality but I just don't see it as such a huge factor in the relationship. My thinking is that it is like any other health issue someone may have. I wouldn't be turned off because someone has a certain diet, vs. say someone in a wheel chair. It just doesn't seem like an issue to me. Personality, goals, chemistry...those are way more important...
  11. LMAO...oh the Glupons kill me. I'm forever throwing away coupons because I can't use them. Oh and don't even get me started on commercials. I rue the day when my son will ask me to buy him something he saw on TV that he can't have. And as far as Gludiots go, it absolutely amazes me how many people really don't know things like pasta, bread, cookies, and...
  12. To put a slightly new perspective on this...it is way easier to explain medically necessary eating habits while dating than to divulge that you are a single parent. Seriously man you are judging her far worse than she would judge you if you actually explained your diet. Give people some credit or at least the opportunity to step up. My husband said that...
  13. This is what I do too. I just make whatever I used to make with some adjustments. If I am unsure how or would like recipe ideas for a certain dish I just google "gluten free ______". My son did the exact same thing and was drinking more liquid because he just didn't want to eat. At first because he was so underweight we were concerned about getting calories...
  14. If you haven't already, go read the "Endoscopy and Anxiety" thread on this board. A lot of us parents have put our experiences with the biopsy on that thread. My son was diagnosed at 22 months by way of blood test and biopsy. The information is overwhelming I know. The diet seems impossible at first, but it is not really that bad and honestly my whole family...
  15. And that is why so many of us aren't taken seriously...UGH! My mom was getting her gluten-free info from my Aunt because my cousin put her kids on a gluten-free diet. I come to find out that the gluten-free diet is because they are on the Autism spectrum and she does occasionally allow them a treat and doesn't worry about cross contamination. So of course...
  16. Yes I'm pretty sure it was the butter. Also butter tends to make cookies spread (I believe because it melts faster) so I typically sub out butter in cookies for half butter and half crisco (or butter flavored crisco). I think the purpose of butter is to distribute fat which has something to do with the moisture and shape of the cookie. So melting the butter...
  17. With some people like at restaurants I just say "allergy" since it may be easier for them to get. With family and friends I explain it like this: it is like feeding someone rat poison. I know it sounds harsh, but if you think about it is a pretty close comparison. I wish you luck and hope that things get better.
  18. To be honest my husband and I were a complete wreck. James was 22 months when he had the procedure. He really didn't have any comprehension of the whole thing, but we just told him that they were going to look at his tummy so that we can make him feel better. We took him into the prep room where they gave him a shot of something to make him a little loopy...
  19. You look like you are way ahead of me in the same type of process! I want to open a cookie store that specifically caters to gluten, dairy, and nut intolerance/allergy. Something along the lines of a Mrs. Field's type operation. Cookies are fun to make and it KILLS me that my child, my nephew, and any other child out there cannot go to the mall and simply...
  20. No I can confirm that normal people do not react like a Celiac or gluten sensitive person would going off wheat and then re-introducing it. My household is gluten-free because of our 2yr old son and I was eating exclusively gluten-free for the past few months. Recently, since our finances have taken a huge hit I broke down and started buying cup o'noodles...
  21. Yeah if I am looking at whole uncut fruit like an apple then I would probably wipe it down and trust it. But cut fruit and chips, no. You never even know who was handling the food and what they were handling before that. I barely trust my own mother's house. Buffets are a CC nightmare. Bring your own food or eat before you go.
  22. OUCH! I do not envy you right now. It is the age, but I'm sure that having Celiac compounds the issue. She is most likely not going to like anything you set in front of her or want anything "special". Do you make separate meals for her vs. the rest of the family? You may want to consider having making gluten free meals that the whole family eats. Also i...
  23. I agree with PP...you can get Ramen type soups with rice noodles that are gluten free and very inexpensive. Rice is cheap and easy to make into a meal. I personally love mexican rice and it is cheap to make. Pair it with some black beans and some corn tortillas and you've got a very filling meal. gluten-free pasta can be a bit pricey, but if you are feeding...
