I am a pediatrician and I take care of predominantly newborn infants. I have been seeing more and more infants with cow's milk protein allergies/intolerances over the last 5 years than in the past. I am interested in this diagnosis because two of my four kids had issues with milk protein as infants (before I was diagnosed and gluten free). I have been unable...

ARCHIVED Jennifer Esposito's Celiac Story
jebby replied to psawyer's topic in Publications & Publicity
Thanks for posting this Peter. I was able to relate to her story and will pass on the link to my family and friends. -
ARCHIVED A Documentary Every American Needs To Watch
jebby replied to bridgeofsighs's topic in Publications & Publicity
I watched this last night and I threw out all of my gluten free food which is GMO. I was horrified to learn about the history of the implementation of genetically modified food into our food chain. -
ARCHIVED Corn Tortillas
jebby replied to buckwheat's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have never gotten sick from the Mission White Corn ones. I have gotten sick from La Banderita. -
I have 4 children. I was undiagnosed while breast feeding my 3 oldest and they were fine. I am now gluten free while breast feeding my 4th and there is no difference in her health or digestion compared to her gluten exposed siblings. Congratulations on your baby!!

ARCHIVED Celiac/lactose - Breastfeed Vs. Bottle
jebby replied to SmileyKylie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I agree. There is some decent research that providing breastmilk can help delay the onset of celiac disease in children who are genetically predisposed. Make sure that you take a prenatal vitamin and vitamin D and that your thyroid levels stay stable while you are breast feeding. Good luck with your pregnancy!! -
ARCHIVED Transient Celiac Autoimmunity In A Adult
jebby replied to jebby's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is interesting because at the end of this case report the authors claim that this is the first report of such a phenomenon. Perhaps because the patient wasn't actually ever diagnosed with celiac disease. Do you have/know the references for the other similar case reports? I would appreciate it. -
ARCHIVED Body Products
jebby replied to Sam'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The last I checked, about 6 months ago, these brands were safe (and I have used without a problem): Shampoo: Pantene and Garnier Body wash: Dove, Suave Toothpaste: Crest and Colgate -
ARCHIVED Can An Infant Have Gluten Problems?
jebby replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Are you drinking milk or consuming dairy? We see tons of infants who react to casein, which is one of the major proteins in cow's milk, and can easily pass through breastmilk. My oldest had a severe milk protein intolerance in her first few months of life, with green stools with mucus, bad reflux, and we couldn't get her to gain weight. The latest statistics... -
I second that on Dr. Meyer. I went to medical school with him and he is a great person (and doctor from what I've heard thru the grapevine!)

ARCHIVED Transient Celiac Autoimmunity In A Adult
jebby replied to jebby's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Just realized that I made a typo, the title should include the words "in an adult" not "a adult." Maybe that's why none of you are commenting? -
I agree with those that say you should hold off. Most of the serious large bowel disorders I can think of (and that could be diagnosed on a colonoscopy) involve not only mucus, but blood in the stool, which it sounds like you're not having. Did your GI doc mention what conditions he/she would be looking for on the colonoscopy? If so, are any alternate (and...

ARCHIVED Transient Celiac Autoimmunity In A Adult
jebby posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I came across this case report in the pubmed.gov database. It is going to be published in one of the upcoming issues of the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology. Dr. Peter Green, from Columbia, is one of the co-authors. To summarize, it discusses a 58 year old man who is employed at a bagel shop and eats gluten on a regular basis. Throughout the vignette... -
ARCHIVED What Does A Normal Baby Poop Look Like?
jebby replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I have three young children, non of them have celiac or gluten sensitivity, and their poops have been all over the place in terms of consistency, color, texture, odor, etc during late infancy and the toddler years. Mushy, formed, brown, green, loose, foul smelling, peanut butter like, have all occurred at various times. I would be most concerned if a child... -
ARCHIVED Tell Me About "gluten Defense" Pills
jebby replied to Katrala's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just checked out these pills on the Enzymatic Therapy website (they are the manufacturer of "Gluten Defense"). The enzymes in these pills appear to be pancreatic enzymes. As long as one has a healthy pancreas, their own body makes all of these enzymes to start with. None of the enzymes in this pill specifically target gluten or gliadin, just proteins in... -

ARCHIVED Can Gluten Contamination Cause Seizures
jebby replied to Tig's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
There have actually been quite a few case reports in pediatric and neurologic medical journals over the last few years showing that celiac disease can lead to seizures. I will try to post some links later on. I do have a co-worker whose seizures went away once she was gluten-free, and she is now off all of her anti-epileptic medications. -
ARCHIVED Why Did You Suspect You Were Super-Sensitive?
jebby replied to T.H.'s topic in Super Sensitive People
I noticed that I kept getting glutened from processed foods with no gluten-containing ingredients, like Tostitos tortilla chips and Reese's peanut butter cups, when I was about 6 months post-diagnosis. I would have the exact same symptoms as I did if I ate a bowel of regular pasta, immediate bloating and stabbing abdominal pains, followed by other digestive... -
I am super sensitive and I have eaten at several different P.F. Chang's around the country (Boston, Chicago, Cleveland) without getting sick. Enjoy!

If you are seeing an first year resident as your PCP, then she just finished medical school 12 weeks ago. I saw one case of celiac disease when I was in medical school, and it was a woman with a "classic" presentation of celiac disease. I urge you to find a more experienced primary care physician, at least someone who has completed all her/his training and...

ARCHIVED Should I Keep Ttc When I'm Not Sure If I Have Celiac?
jebby replied to bluebutterflygirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you feel better off of gluten, and are concerned you may have celiac disease, I would recommend staying gluten free while you conceive and are pregnant. Untreated celiac disease is linked with infertility and an increased risk of miscarriage. Good luck! -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Soy Reaction Like?
jebby replied to GFreeMO's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think I am in the same boat as you. I thought I was getting cc'd from a bunch of gluten-free products, like chocolate chex and some of the mixes, but I think I am reacting to soy too. This really stinks! Just wanted to let you know that you're not alone. -
From a biochemical standpoint, I cannot understand how a simple sugar, like maltose, can have any gliadin protein (gluten) attached to after processing...are there any biochemists or scientists out there who can comment on this? Where could the protein possibly be attached to?
-
Maltose is a type of sugar, just like fructose, galactose, and glucose are all sugars. Maltose refers to its chemical structure, not that it is in anyway derived from anything "malt."

ARCHIVED Considering Putting Baby On Gluten-Free Diet - Am I Paranoid?
jebby replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You may want to make sure that your child does not have an anal strep or staph infection. These are surprisingly common in infants and toddlers and usually start to resolve with a few days of antibiotics. Another cause of smelly, green loose stools would be a giardia infection, which is common in some areas of the U.S. and can spread through daycare centers...
