				ARCHIVED Learning Issues From Celiac?
srall replied to momof2sn's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
One of the many reasons I moved my daughter to a gluten free diet was that in kindergarten and 1st grade she'd been placed in accelerated learning groups, and by second grade was put in a remedial spelling group and placed several reading levels behind where she'd been placed at the end of first grade. She was struggling with simple math and just seemed... -

ARCHIVED What To Do Please Need Your Help!
srall replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wholeheartedly second this. -
"But the pizza crust is white, not wheat." Sorry, couldn't resist. I think your suggestion to help with the party is a good one. I *think* my daughter is pretty aware of what's off limits...And I use allergy a lot, rather than auto immune response.

I don't know if I have celiac even though I had so many symptoms. I KNOW I'm gluten intolerant. I feel weird saying I have celiac, because I don't know if I'm lying or telling the truth. HOWEVER, in some situations where I need people to take me very seriously, like a restaurant for example, I say whatever I need to say to get my point across whether...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Like Being Celiac
srall replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with many of the above posters. This has forced me to really look at the American Diet. Because my diet was so "limited" (or so I thought) it ended up opening up a variety of yummy food I never considered. I've learned so much about eating organic, non processed food. I'm amazed that so many of my physical symptoms can be completely managed without... -
I took my gluten/dairy free 7 year old to a birthday party today. I knew they'd have pizza and cake so I fed her before we left the house and sent her with a piece of gluten free cake. When I dropped her off I told her buddy's mom that my daughter is gluten free, and had already been fed so if there were any doubts about something being gluten free please...

ARCHIVED Words To Describe A Celiac-Attach
srall replied to concernedmamma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is a tough one. I'm trying to figure out if my 7 year old's experience with going gluten free will be like mine. Will she experience withdrawal, will other food intolerances pop up? How will she react to an accidental glutening? I know adults don't always react to gluten with D. Sometimes it's joint pain, confusion, brain fog etc. I can only... -

ARCHIVED I'm About To Start An Elimination Diet...
srall replied to StacyA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I started this whole shebang off when I did a detox diet with a friend of mine, which I bet is similar to the elimination diet you're facing. As I added foods back in it was very easy to pinpoint which foods were causing which troubles. I have a lot of grains in my diet right now because I just took the family gluten free, but the meals are now geared toward... -

ARCHIVED I'm About To Start An Elimination Diet...
srall replied to StacyA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey...I'm Stacey A too...but with the e. I definitely need to do an elimination diet to lose the grains and the coffee once and for all. But I'm going to do the classic New Year's Resolution thing and get through the holidays. I feel pretty good now considering I'm avoiding dairy, gluten, soy and corn, but I know I could feel even better if I just tweaked... -

ARCHIVED Watch Out For This Halloween Candy
srall replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just reread your post and realized I'd read it wrong about the tootsie rolls. I don't think my daughter had any of those twists. I'm actually happy that most of her candy got sidelined. Last year the candy seemed to last forever. -

ARCHIVED Watch Out For This Halloween Candy
srall replied to ljgs's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We're struggling with our first gluten free Halloween. I thought I'd read tootsie rolls were gluten free? She did have a sour stomach last night but I thought it was too much candy in general. It's the first time I'd heard my daughter complain of a gassy stomach since taking her gluten free. I'll check her stash for the sour punch twist. -

Thank you! My daughter is newly gluten free and we were wondering! Her favorite candies are gluten free thank goodness

ARCHIVED My Girlfriend Is A Celiac And I Need Help
srall replied to Tpayne10's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well, I can't stress this enough: Your girlfriend is normal. Or if she isn't, it's not because she's diagnosed with Celiac. My best advice is to believe her, know that gluten does harm her in many different ways, seen and unseen, and she can NEVER EVER EVER eat it. There is no such thing as "A little bit won't hurt you now and then" If you guys have... -

ARCHIVED Share How Gluten Free Has Improved Your Life.
srall replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't feel at all qualified to recommend a diet to you, but I guess I'm doing it anyway. I think if I were in your shoes, I'd do a whole foods diet, no processed, no grains for awhile. Eat a lot of veggies, some fruit, and meat. Cut out caffeine and alcohol. Give yourself a little bit of time...it takes time, and I bet you'll start to improve. By the... -

ARCHIVED ? Advice Needed About 4-Year Old?
srall replied to rmack's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Taking the family organic and gluten free has meant more money spent at the grocery store, but far less spent eating out. -

ARCHIVED Can't Pinpoint What Is Causing My Joint Pain
srall replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm just giving up yoga for the week. I can't bear the thought of a life without yoga. I think you're right that the inertia is making this worse. Maybe just some walks for the next few days and head back to the studio next week. -

ARCHIVED ? Advice Needed About 4-Year Old?
srall replied to rmack's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I just moved my second grader to a gluten free diet (and dairy free) a week ago. She is already a new child. She was mixing up letters and wasn't able to do simple math. Doing homework with her this week was completely different. At any rate, she even at age 4 exhibited many of the same symptoms as your son. This past week is honestly the first time... -

ARCHIVED Can't Pinpoint What Is Causing My Joint Pain
srall replied to srall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I took some advil. I'm wondering if a course of advil over the next couple of days will get the inflammation down and keep it down. I don't want to rely on it permanently though. Since you're in MN too, are you feeling more achy today? I thought the low barometric pressure thing was very interesting. -

				ARCHIVED Survived My First Glutening
srall replied to tea-and-crumpets's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My first glutening was after six weeks gluten free. That pretty much clinched the "lifestyle" for me. I really don't think restaurants understand gluten free. I have too many stories, like the salad still coming with croutons or bread on it, saying no dairy then cheese sprinkled on top. Breading on fish...it's really a hassle. I'm glad you had a quick... -

ARCHIVED Can't Pinpoint What Is Causing My Joint Pain
srall posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One of my symptoms that I manage through a gluten free diet is arthritis. I also do yoga to alleviate joint pain. For the past week my pain has been pretty bad and I can't figure out what is triggering it. I don't think it's gluten because I'm not having GI issues and my head is clear. I am having some fatigue but honestly that could be the time of year... -
Listen, I was on a vegan diet before all of this. I now eat meat about 2 times a day. And eggs almost every day. Otherwise I'd starve to death. But I know the world needs some vegetarians and vegans to balance my meat consumption out.

I just tried Udi's bread last week and I was pretty impressed. But I'd been off bread for 8 months so I barely remember what it tasted like! I second investing in a thermos...make soups or pastas in advance and carry them. I do this mostly for my daughter and although I spent this weekend whipping up soups and basil pesto, it was actually pretty easy making...

ARCHIVED Can A Celiac Individual Tolerate Gluten-Free Pasta, Even If It Is Wheat-Based?
srall replied to ammaestro's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I read these responses sort of quickly so sorry if I'm repeating. If I got sick from something I'd eaten in a restaurant I'd probably first assume cross contamination, or that the chef didn't really get what gluten free meant. I might try making some rice pasta for myself at home in a controlled environment before I ruled it out. That said, I put my...
