				ARCHIVED Immune Compromised?
srall replied to raeskids's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ack! I just typed a response to you and lost it. My daughter's fevers went away after going gluten free. She's 7 1/2 and hasn't had one fever since going gluten free in October. She does still have a lot of stomach issues. I think it can take awhile to get back on track. I know in adults in can take from 6 months to 2 years to really heal. I would... -
Jason, when I write what I'm about to say, I want you to understand it's coming from a caring and gentle place. I too have noticed that you seem to be willingly spinning your wheels. If you are not willing to get counseling, may I suggest that you consciously approach your life from a place of gratitude? I have an only child. I believe, but am not...

ARCHIVED How Come You Do Not See Older People ?
srall replied to Karl Otto's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My mother is 68 this year and has both celiac and diabetes. She is a retired dietician so I'm sure a lifetime of diet and exercise has helped her. -

				ARCHIVED Attention In School
srall replied to Liddle4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is opposite. In fact yesterday I let her eat some crackers with corn starch and I lost her last night. We couldn't do homework, she was doubled over in pain, couldn't concentrate...but this morning was able to finish her homework in 2 minutes. Personally when I started the diet, I would sometimes have those reactions because I wasn't getting... -
I have one girlfriend who was having a lot of the same problems I'd been having for years. When I went gluten free she had testing done and sure enough is not supposed to be eating gluten. I don't really think this is entirely because of me. She was on a journey to feeling healthier and she would have gotten there eventually. The best story is that...

ARCHIVED Questions About My 5 Year Old's Test Results - Md Not Helpful!
srall replied to Cara in Boston's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Um, I'll certainly defer to others' opinions since my daughter was diagnosed based on dietary response. We have a wonderful pediatrician. She was so so so so sick that I personally didn't give a rat's ass what the doctors ended up saying. If gluten free helped her feel better, then that was going to be the plan. My brother went through all the testing... -

ARCHIVED Poll- How Tall Are You?
srall replied to Cinnamongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm 5'7" but I think my height is pretty normal considering the rest of my family. I am the shortest one though. Not that 5'7" is short by any means. My 7 year old however is TINY and always has been. (She's been gluten/dairy/corn free since October) Until I realized what was going on I was completely flummoxed because of my height and my husband is... -

				ARCHIVED School Absences
srall replied to SilverSlipper's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Srall - I'm glad your daughter doesn't react too badly due to gluten exposure. My daughter is in so much pain she doubles over and (once after eating a bowl of cereal that she shouldn't) couldn't walk from the cramping. She moans in her sleep. It's heart-breaking. Her reactions come with uncontrollable diarrhea (she has a free pass to run to the bathroom... -

				ARCHIVED School Absences
srall replied to SilverSlipper's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's good advice about having a doctor's note to excuse illnesses due to celiac. However I have never held my daughter home because of a reaction to gluten. It's just that before she was diagnosed, she got every illness. In a six month period she got strep throat, a bona fide case of influenza, many many high fevers that lasted many days, a lot of sore... -

				ARCHIVED School Absences
srall replied to SilverSlipper's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
At the beginning of the school year we planned a trip to Disney World. Then all the "issues" began. Actually they were there, but things were really getting bad. By the time I pulled my daughter off of gluten/dairy and corn, which was the middle of October, she had missed 8 days of school. Since going gluten free she's only missed one, and I'm annoyed... -
We are going to Disney World in about 2 months. Last time we went was "the time before" so I just made a bunch of reservations for character meals. Now my 7 year old and I are both dairy/corn/gluten free and I think it's going to be very different. What do I need to do before we go as far as contacting restaurants? Or can we show up places and announce...

ARCHIVED Is It Hard For You To Believe When People React To Different Gluten Levels Than You?
srall replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know I'm not as sensitive as some people on this board. I also know from personal experience if I eat soup with a roux because I am stupid and don't know what roux is (believe me I know now), that I will end up with DH, crippling arthritis and flu like symptoms for two weeks. But my husband is still a gluten-head and he hasn't gotten me sick so far with... -
Yes. I have "Is that gluten free?" It was $7.99 and put off buying it, but it's been so helpful in the super market. It's probably saved me a lot of money because I don't get something home only to realize it's not safe. I don't have the restaurant app because most of the restaurants we eat at are not chains. But it might be useful on a road trip.

ARCHIVED At What Age Was Your Child/children Diagnosed Celiac?
srall replied to salexander421's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter is not diagnosed Celiac. She is 7 1/2 and I put her on a gluten/dairy/corn free diet in October. HUGE improvements. -

ARCHIVED I'm Being Impatient, I Know I Am.
srall replied to DJ Jess's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with losing the dairy and keeping the foods unprocessed. It took 2 full weeks until I started feeling even a little bit better. I think I got worse before I got better. But when the fog lifted...oh boy...life completely changed and I wasn't going back for a king's ransom. I bet if you can be really strict with your diet you'll start to notice... -

				ARCHIVED Whats Your 'go-To' Meal
srall replied to runningcrazy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had a crazy week and woke up and realized I had nothing prepared. No left overs at all which is usually my "go to." So I had eggs for breakfast, french toast with my daughter's Udi's bread for lunch. Often I'll have tuna with mayo, peas and dill weed with glutino crackers as a very fast meal. I know this can't last because I am realizing the next level... -

				ARCHIVED Am I Crazy?
srall replied to divamomma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm guessing it's working already. Don't be bummed if she still has some off days though. I still see it with my daughter and she's been doing this about 3 months. -

ARCHIVED How Many People Are Actually Self-diagnosed?
srall replied to no-more-muffins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm self diagnosed, and my daughter (7) tested negative, but based on dietary response she's gluten/corn/dairy free. I'll be gluten free for a year this March. Sometimes now I just think I'm crazy and this was in my head, or was something else...like caffeine, or a combination of several things. But then I have to stop and remind myself how last April... -

ARCHIVED Trusting Other People's gluten-free Cooking
srall replied to domesticactivist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
{ votes yes I eat things that my friends make, but really I only do if it's a gluten free dish/item to begin with. So essentially a lot of cut up veggies, or a salad. The thing I'm most nervous about is how much education went into how I need to feed myself now. (And my daughter). I don't expect others to know or care about all the cc risks. However... -

				ARCHIVED Where Do I Start?
srall replied to gemma123's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Short answer: Yes, he can most definitely test negative for celiac and still be gluten intolerant. If you suspect gluten why don't you take it out of his diet for a couple of weeks and see if some issues clear up? When we went out for pizza with my daughter she could barely make it home before the D started. She's dairy intolerant too so it was a double... -

				ARCHIVED Seeking Advice/insight
srall replied to concernedmamma's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 7 year old had the worst tantrums. Similar to how you describe your son. We needed her to be entirely gluten/dairy and corn free to see improvement. Behavior is smoothing out greatly. She's still a very spirited child, but definitely calming down. People and teachers who don't know she's on the diet have made comments about her appearance and behavior... -

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed, Can't Really Afford The Over Priced Foods.
srall replied to tessabear's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That does suck. I remember the days of being so poor very very well...macaroni and cheese was $.25 a box. I am showing my age, and of course mac and cheese is off limits to you. I guess I just second the advice to stay away from expensive substitutes for now and eat things that are less expensive and naturally gluten free. That's going to help you feel... -

ARCHIVED How Many Parents And Kids Have Celiac?
srall replied to shezatrip's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Nope to the allergy panel. Since I was having so many food issues that resolved with diet (gluten free in March 2010) I recognized a lot of symptoms in my daughter. First we pulled her off lactose. Slight improvement. Then I just pulled her off dairy because I really really really didn't want it to be gluten. She was still struggling. And when I say... -

ARCHIVED How Many Parents And Kids Have Celiac?
srall replied to shezatrip's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter had the same symptoms as your son and then some. She's a new child gluten/dairy and corn free. My mother, daughter and myself are on a gluten free diet, and not by choice. We were having severe health issues that cleared up when we went gluten free, and in my daughter's and my case also corn and dairy. None of us tested positive to a blood... -

ARCHIVED Symptoms You Never Realized You Had
srall replied to sandsurfgirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think I blame everything on celiac. Right now I have cold symptoms and I'm more convinced I ate something. I guess the tendency to blame everything on celiac is because so much cleared up: migraines, stomach aches, arthritis, dry skin, clumsiness, cold sores (which I actually think was more related to dairy), chronic illness, anxiety, rashes, lack of...
