  1. Yes to the joint pain. I think it's my worst symptom. Or maybe I should say most aggravating. It is getting better on a gluten/soy/dairy free diet. I think I need to be stricter with the soy and dairy though. It's tough going. I'm sure you'll see a vast improvement as you remain gluten free.
  2. I like that pesto recipe. I do one with pine nuts and basil (and spinach) that I really like too. I actually can get the little one to eat that occasionally too. So that's a good reminder. I'll get to Trader Joe's this week!
  3. I wouldn't trust the hot dog or the corn bread. Especially at a FB game. Feel better soon! (I miss corn dogs so much!)
  4. I don't know. Sometimes when I'm having an off day I just wonder if it's a combo of things overloading my system. I agree that those folks don't seem to be taking cross contamination seriously. About the only person I trust to cook for me is my mom since she's gluten intolerant too. I hope you recover quickly. Stinks to feel so bad with a little one...
  5. I do this...I tend to take bigger risks when I know I don't have to do much the next day.
  6. We'll try the almond and coconut milk. I gave her the lactose free milk again and she had two bouts of diarrhea. So we're done. I told her she must eat spinach and broccoli to get her calcium...and she actually ate a spinach salad for breakfast. I almost fainted. I think since she's seen me be so diligent about my diet maybe I am rubbing off on her?...
  7. I read your post last night and it got me thinking. I have gluten intolerance, and I only have to look out for myself. It must be hell trying to protect a child from gluten. And I agree, a relative knowingly glutening a child is horrifying. This answer might be sort of off topic. But whenever I'm heading somewhere, like most everyone else on this board...
  8. I very much appreciate everyone's advice, and for answering my question. I too believe that there are far better sources than dairy for calcium; I just can't get the child to eat spinach or broccoli. The fortified oj will probably work with her...that's a good suggestion. Hopefully she can still do cheeses. It seems like it's mostly milk and definitely...
  9. I actually had a dream last night that I was back in college, except that instead of having the usual nightmare of having a final in a class that I never attended, I dreamt I had celiacs and was trying to find food I could eat in the dorm cafeteria. Well, I am 20 years out of college and I know there are people on this board who will have far better advice...
  10. I hope this question is okay here since it's not about gluten. And in fact it's not a question for me, it's about my 7 year old daughter. For several months now she's been getting D and I am narrowing it down to dairy. The latest carton of milk I've purchased is lactose free, but she still seems to be getting D. I don't eat dairy mostly because I don...
  11. Um, I've admitted this in other posts, but I actually did go gluten free as part of a "fad" diet. Well, I don't know how else to categorize it. I was feeling blah all the time (didn't realize then that chronic D and C, joint pain, fatigue and brain fog were not normal) and my friend (age 42) and her friend (age 60+) had done a diet detox where they eliminated...
  12. Yup...I can definitely taste the chemicals too. And I have always had a huge sweet tooth and now sugar is too sweet for me (ha ha) I can't believe I now crave meat and salads. Since I'm self diagnosed, I'm still trying to figure out how sensitive I am to gluten, although it seems to me that I'm pretty darn sensitive, and I can eat Bob's Red Mill...
  13. I totally believe this. I'm a stay at home mom with ONE child, and for years I would look around and wonder how other women could be so together and organized while I was buried alive every day. Not to mention I was just counting the minutes until I could just sit on the couch from exhaustion. I've always been a really strong speller, and now when I'm...
  14. I didn't mean to question at all how you were approaching your relatives. I was just agreeing with the point that living by example is about the only way to deal with this. Believe me I completely understand the pain of watching a loved one suffer from something that seems so "easy" to fix. My mom and I have both been on this journey together and we've...
  15. Agreed. My mom is also gluten free and her health is hugely improved, so he's got two good examples. He can decide for himself when it's time to cry "uncle." If he can see through his depression/brain fog.
  16. I don't have advice...I need it too. I was glutened on vacation over my daughter's birthday and spent the whole of her birthday and the rest of the trip in bed. I had to take three planes (2 connections) home with just me and my 7 year old daughter and I could barely walk. It was the worst. I slept for about 2 weeks straight. I hope there is some response...
  17. I do agree with this, but I have to admit it makes me crazy to see my brother suffer much much more severely than I ever have and continue to eat gluten and wheat. He was told by a doctor a couple of years ago that he did not have celiacs so he just figured "Hey, gluten's not the problem." Since I've gone gluten free we've talked about it several times...
  18. I just think that your symptoms sound so much like gluten intolerance, it just might be worth a try. Just to make sure. But I do believe it may be just the soy. I've seen it with my friend.
  19. My girlfriend is soy intolerant and we have compared symptoms and she does indeed have the same reactions as I do to gluten. Have you actually done an elimination diet to see if you feel better off gluten? (I'm not disputing the soy intolerance at all...I am intolerant to soy and my friend who is intolerant to soy has my gluten intolerance symptoms). ...
  20. Not colon cancer but type 2 diabetes is rampant. TXPLOWGIRL, my brother is exactly the same. I know beyond a doubt he is intolerant to gluten. His symptoms have been much more severe than mine over the years, but his attitude is that he might as well enjoy life while he's here. Personally I'm enjoying my life much more now that I'm not dealing with...
  21. I am just sitting here shaking my head.
  22. Melinda, I am 42 and for YEARS have blamed my fatigue and symptoms on age, stress, motherhood, etc. If I'm having a good day (because there are still bad days) I feel 20. Keep going...you are going to feel so much better! You may have to drop some other foods too before you get there, but when you do you'll feel great.
  23. I'm not going to count the pbj sandwich I ate just to see if the gluten was a problem. I wish I'd used a pizza or a donut. MMMMM pizza mmmm donuts from the corner bakery (they are the best in the world). Well, I guess those are really the only two things that just drive me crazy to have to give up. Nothing else is even tempting anymore.
  24. It seems like since going gluten free my stomach issues are pretty minor. I tend to go into a brain fog and my joints flare up pretty much right away. Sometimes I'll get nauseous even as I'm eating...cue to stop eating right now...The brain fog and joint pain can last a couple of days or more. Usually the nauseous stomach goes away in 2 to 4 hours. ...
  25. Oh and one other thing. You may notice many other symptoms you never would have thought were related to diet clear up too. Even last night as I was lying in bed reading it occured to me that since I've been gluten free my hands and forearms never go numb anymore from holding the book too long. I haven't had a cold sore in 5 months and other even more embarrassing...
