  1. I know there are several people on this board who are either paleo, SCD or just eat rice (or a couple of grains) I do eat rice including rice pasta, and white potatoes. Other than that my diet is pretty paleo. I cannot eat eggs. So, I'm a former vegan who has made her peace with meat, after being diagnosed gluten/dairy intolerant. I'm curious what...
  2. My reaction to corn is the same as gluten. In fact the only grain that I can tolerate is just plain white rice. I feel best on the caveman diet, but I don't do it all the time. I should. But it's so hard for me...so I go in spurts. However, the only cheats from the paleo diet that I do are rice and white potatoes. My daughter has an intolerance to...
  3. Kirstie, my mom had the same experience as you. She was gluten free for 2 years (sans diagnosis) and was still anemic. Her doctor convinced her to do the gluten challenge so they could do a scope. She was vomiting and (TMI alert) couldn't even get out of bed to go to the bathroom after the first gluten meal. She called the doctor and talked to the nurse...
  4. I was in your shoes but I chose NOT to go back on gluten to test. A minor mishap with a creamy clam chowder put me in bed for three weeks, so eating a lot of gluten for several weeks wasn't going to happen. I had a family to take care of. Plus a diagnosis wasn't going to change my behavior. But some can survive the gluten challenge to get the diagnosis...
  5. Looks like you are feeling better, but I was just going to agree. I am two years in and I try to be really strict with my diet. I also feel best on no processed/rice as only grain diet. And my daughter is on the same diet. I sometimes think I can't spend one more minute in the dang kitchen either making something from scratch or cleaning it...3 times...
  6. Oh yes...we also had mouth sores and no stamina, so thin...and she was clingy and cranky from the get go. I was amazed how that resolved too. I was also bracing for a cancer diagnosis. I had two friends whose sons were diagnosed with leukemia at that time and the same types of symptoms got them to the doctor initially. I was so relieved we could resolve...
  7. OH my goodness, it drives me crazy all the people I talk to who I KNOW are having gluten problems but don't even want to hear it. (Because I was the same way I guess) After my mother who was diagnosed with a wheat allergy and my girlfriend who actually had a dairy allergy (but figured it out doing an elimination diet) convinced me that I should at least...
  8. I see this is an older post, but I thought I'd still chime in. My daughter and I have terrible problems with Udi's...I too think it's the corn syrup they use as a mold inhibitor. The only bread we can eat other than what I make from scratch is EnerG brown rice bread, and I can eat about one sandwich a week. My daughter eats it every day which drives me...
  9. Based on your symptoms, and the fact that they are alleviated when you avoid gluten, I would say you MAY have celiac (even with a negative test) and at the very least you ARE gluten intolerant. Both of which require a gluten free diet. My tests were negative, but my life changed the day I went gluten free. As far as looking for other things, I guess...
  10. I have been gluten free for 2 years now. I tried oatmeal a year in...got a little sick and thought I needed more time. Tried oatmeal again on my 2 year free mark which was a few weeks ago and got VERY sick. I had nausea and a super bad stomach ache for about a week. I had forgotten what it was like to have that crampy stomach all the time. I honestly...
  11. My opinion is that people are different, and their bodies respond to different diets. I have friends who feel amazing on a vegan diet, but I can't do it longer than 6 weeks. I would love to be vegan or vegetarian, but since I can't handle grains, I just think it's too hard to be gluten intolerant and a vegan/vegetarian. But I know people here do it. ...
  12. This re-post is perfect timing. I gave up eggs about 3 weeks ago because I had some redness and heat in my face every time I ate eggs, which is every morning, and also felt tired and little nauseous every morning after breakfast. I suspected eggs for a long time but was reluctant to give up yet ANOTHER food (gluten, dairy, corn, most soy...) and a very...
  13. I did not see the show. I learned early on that magazine articles and t.v. shows that addressed gluten free diets will drive you crazy.
  14. Rice is the only grain that doesn't make me sick. Corn for me is very similar to wheat. Terrible bloating, nausea, brain fog and exhaustion. I do agree though to check the brand. You need to make sure it's labeled gluten free.
  15. I believe I went through a withdrawal when I gave up gluten. I had to stay pretty close to a bathroom for about 10 to 14 days. Be nice to your body (whole, unprocessed foods), consider dropping dairy for awhile and sit tight for a few days. You should start feeling better pretty soon.
  16. I agree 100% with Skylark. I can barely stand to eat out anymore because my food is so good. It took awhile though. My diet has to be very clean and balanced in order to feel well. I think the big take away lesson in all of this learning to be gluten free for me is that NOBODY should be eating processed foods. Gluten free or not. Your taste buds will...
  17. My daughter and I both tested negative for celiac too, but we had both been off gluten for several weeks, and I wasn't willing to put us through the challenge. I also didn't want to push it in case she did get a negative diagnosis and then go through life not being believed that gluten makes her sick. At least this way I can explain why we got a negative...
  18. My 8 1/2 year old had terrible anxiety before going gluten free. I'm so glad that issue resolved. However we both need big doses of vitamin B every day and if we miss we get deficient right away. The B has really calmed my daughter down. I'm still trying to get my daughter off sugar, so I believe that this has an effect as well. We both need daily probiotics...
  19. I agree with the idea of a naturopath. I actually have a name but since all our health issues resolved after the big diet change, I haven't had cause to go. Now I think I'll make an appt. And we do take a probiotic. Maybe we just were lazy over the holidays and got zapped. I was sick this weekend too with my first cold in 2 years, but didn't have the...
  20. I am in the Twin Cities. I know our co op has classes for cooking gluten free, but I haven't tried them. I wonder though if something like that would help you connect with others on your same journey. I sort of agree with Lisa. I use this site for info and support more than anything else. A couple of years ago at the State Fair, my husband encouraged...
  21. Today I took my little girl to the doctor and she was diagnosed with strep. This is the first time in over a year she's needed any medication AT ALL since she's gone gluten free. She's also corn and dairy free. The corn is an allergy. By the time we got to the pharmacy we waited for 45 minutes while the pharmacist called the manufacturer to check on...
  22. It might be worth talking to a doctor. Maybe you have something going on with your inner ear. I have not had this happen since going gluten free. I can't imagine what might be causing it.
  23. Nope...I'm just careful. Very careful. I was just trying to make the point that this is not something to be taken lightly, or to get after people for taking it too seriously. And to turn this back to the OP: Honestly I had to intentionally gluten myself one time to really get how serious this is. I was on vacation and I thought...gluten free is...
  24. I admit I am completely paranoid about gluten. This comes from years of chronic fatigue, secondary infertility, miscarriage, migraines, rashes and very very bad joint pain...not too mention more than once having to give myself permission to just go to the bathroom in the car because I didn't think I could get home in time (for the record I made it every...
  25. It's been a long time since I've been hard-core glutened. I do get stomach aches...like nausea, but it's the joint pain that is the big tip off. And it's mostly the left side of my body. If I get cross contaminated from gluten or eat something else I'm intolerant of my left side feels like it's shriveling up. I have always wondered why this is.
