ARCHIVED What Do You Want To Tell Your Friends And Family About Living Gluten Free?
srall replied to LisaDances's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
That I cannot "reverse" my gluten intolerance by eating small amounts of it, gradually increasing the amounts. So glad it worked for you (I personally suspect your gut has healed for now and you will be hit hard again in a matter of time), but as for me and my child...um: NO. -

ARCHIVED What Do You Do To Help The Fatigue?
srall replied to birdie22's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For fatigue after eating something I'm not supposed to (because it's not always gluten), I sometimes just have to go into survival mode. Lots of water and I admit extra caffeine if I need it. Sometimes I need to mentally walk myself through my day step by step because I'm tired, or foggy...literally just going through the motions. For general fatigue... -

ARCHIVED How To Make Someone Understand
srall replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, this might be a small help: When I meet people out for coffee now I carry my own thermos of coconut milk. But you can't be spontaneous unless you want to drink it black. As far as the restaurants I, thankfully am not anywhere near as sensitive as you. Doesn't mean I'm not careful though. Usually we hit up nicer restaurants where we know the... -

ARCHIVED What Is The Forum Good For?
srall replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with everybody's posts. I don't post here very much anymore, but I find myself checking in for support every once in awhile especially when I'm feeling bad from slipping on my diet (whether it's gluten or another sensitivity) In addition, this is the forum where I discovered paleo and primal eating, which is honestly how I feel my absolute best... -
I'd be very careful. I've read stories on this board about people trying to do the gluten challenge and ending up in the emergency room. Back when I started living gluten free (almost 3 years ago now) I didn't realize that I most likely had celiac. I just knew that stopping gluten and dairy was life changing. So about 2 months in we went on vacation and...

ARCHIVED No Gluten, No Corn, No Soy, No Dairy.
srall replied to AnnJay's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I have all your intolerances, plus all grains but rice. Actually avoiding grains when eating out is pretty easy, once you're avoiding gluten. It's a challenge. I sometimes just face the fact that I"m probably going to have a little food hangover the next day. I've had luck with Indian food. Otherwise, hunk of meat with side veggie. We RARELY eat... -

				ARCHIVED Going The Primal Route....
srall replied to LauraB0927's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I mean to go back and read everyone's responses when I have some more time. I'm a huge fan of paleo/primal. I'm actually probably a little more on the primal side. I'm not super strict. I've mostly used paleo when I feel like I need to reset the system and recharge so I'll eat paleo for 30 days. I'm in the middle of a paleo 30 day diet right now and... -
I didn't realize that it was normal to feel good and have energy. It was mind blowing. I went from feeling about 70 years old to feeling 20 (I was 42 when I went gluten free). Keep taking care of yourself and take your vitamins and you should continue to feel great. And to those just starting out, there IS a beautiful light at the end of the tunnel...

ARCHIVED Foood..going To A Ren Faire
srall replied to 123glldd's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Our's has turkey legs so my daughter and I get that. I think our meal last weekend was a huge turkey leg and dill pickles. But honestly that was the only thing there we felt like we could eat. I'd pack nuts and cut up veggies I guess? Oh...there are caramel apples, but we can't do dairy or corn syrup so those are off the table for us, but perhaps okay... -
I hope it's okay that I started a new post but I told a couple of people I would post about the restaurants in Vegas. I thought it was extremely easy to eat DINNER in Vegas gluten free. The restaurants were very accommodating. Lunches were more frustrating. We could find sandwich places or bar food, but it was harder to find a nice place where I could...

I promise that I'll report back. But my best advice for eating out is to just be very firm, vocal and polite as possible. If you feel like you are not being heard you might consider leaving. Whenever I am happily accommodated in a restaurant I go out of my way to thank the server, the manager and even the chef. I try and consider what a pain it must...

ARCHIVED Those Of You That Are Grain Free What Does Your Day Look Like?
srall replied to GFreeMO's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I do eat rice on occasion and on vacation I sort of turn into all bets are off girl, but at home it's like this: (for example) Breakfast: chicken breast with potato (sweet or white) Maybe add a green drink or fruit smoothie Lunch suggestions: pan fried fish shredded chicken breast, tomato, with balsamic and basil hamburger... -
I'm going in two weeks. Ironically the last time I was there I was with a girlfriend who was celiac (I was yet undiagnosed). It was easy for her if I recall. I'll gladly take the suggestions too and then when i get back I'll post too.

ARCHIVED Do You Think Everyone Has Celiacs?
srall replied to 1974girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Guilty. I think gluten causes everything in myself and others. I try and keep my mouth shut. In all fairness, I do have friends who are struggling like I was a few years ago, and I do say to them, why don't you just try? My MIL actually listened and last I heard she's committed to gluten/dairy free (after symptoms got so much better) There is also... -
We were just there last week. It was the first time in two years I didn't get one tiny bit sick on the road. HOWEVER, my food always came out with no flavor. I don't even think they salted my food. But it did mean they took a lot of care with prep which was more important to me. One server had a mom with celiac sprue so she literally stood in the kitchen...

I can't handle flax at all. I get very nauseous. But if you can handle it I think it's really good for you.

ARCHIVED A Relative Is Diagnosed Celiac- Won't Go Gluten-Free
srall replied to LeahBanicki's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My younger brother absolutely must go gluten free. Unfortunately his blood test for celiac was negative so the GI told him gluten wasn't the cause of his many many many many health (physical and mental) problems. He kind of knows he needs to go gluten free but is worried about the cost, loss of convenience and giving up his favorite foods. He's a 40 year... -
Now when people say something like "I would die without bread/gluten", I point out that for me I knew I'd die if I KEPT eating it...so really when faced with this dilemma it's not too hard to choose a life without bread.

WEll, I'm 2 plus years in and have heard all of those over and over. We were traveling this past week (in New Orleans, 9 year old and me gluten free) and in one restaurant I asked for the gluten free menu. I knew they had one because we had eaten there the day before (server was AWESOME that day). This girl, however, was so confused. She brought the...

ARCHIVED You Find Out Who Your Friends Are...
srall replied to livelifelarge24's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My friends have been wonderful! I think because I figured everything out in my forties (self diagnosed) we were maybe at a more mature place? And a lot of my friends were starting to have their own problems with food, primarily dairy and soy, plus a couple of gluten free. I think as each of us starting feeling better, the others tried elimination diets... -

ARCHIVED How Bad Is Cheating On The Gluten Free Diet Periodically
srall replied to icm's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think anybody on this forum is going to say cheating is ever okay. To me it's just not worth it because the symptoms are so severe. I sometimes wonder if I were symptomless if I'd have the discipline to be as vigilant. I would hope so just because I know how dangerous all that gluten is. Plus, even with being super super careful, I feel like... -

ARCHIVED I Attended My First Support Group Meeting.
srall replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I shop at Seward which is really the same diff as the Wedge. But that's a huge trek for you. But honestly after 2 years of this diet, and traveling around the US and England, I have to say the Twin Cities are about one of the best places to be gluten free. I'm sorry you didn't find the support group, but I got the most help on this forum. Seward Co... -

ARCHIVED I Attended My First Support Group Meeting.
srall replied to 1desperateladysaved's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You were trying to go to a support group in Minneapolis? Do you mind me asking where it was (even though it didn't pan out) I love my co op in Minneapolis. I don't know where you are, but this co op is close to downtown. It's good you have a WF by you. That was my store until I found the co op. -

ARCHIVED First Trip To New Orleans Gluten Free
srall posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hi all! We are headed to New Orleans next week to enjoy some hot and humid weather and fine gluten free cuisine. Last time I was there I had the best french toast I have ever tasted in my life...along with all the other NO delicacies, most of which I can't spell: gumbo, begniets?, po'boys, lots of yummy beer. This time I have a 9 year old fellow gfdf...
