  1. Hello- I was dx'd back in fall 2010 and I told everyone in my family to get get tested. My sister and dad were negative and my mom just found out she is positive. She will have the endoscopy in a couple weeks, but her blood tests were very high. She has 0 symptoms and the Dr also did other blood work and all her iron/nutrient levels were normal.

How is that possible to have celiac at 63 and have no symptoms and all normal blood work?

Anyone else get dx'd later in life?

  2. I lost weight. I didn't eat any of the gluten-free cookies or cakes or processed foods really (except the pretzels and those rice crackers). I lost about 7 lbs. I started eating more vegetables and chicken and fish. Also, I added a lot of fruit in place of stuff I was eating with gluten for snacks.

I think for me it made me think about more what I was putting in my mouth and I tried eating healthier too. I miss eating cookies and stuff, but the gluten-free ones had way more calories than regular so I just ditched them completely.

  3. I don't eat any gluten-free labeled desserts or cookies. I eat the Glutino pretzels and gluten-free cold cereal. Other than that I don't eat many of the gluten-free processed foods- mainly because they are high in calories/fat. I do eat Tostitos chips and salsa, that is my downfall!

I think eating no processed foods would be difficult, but you'd probably feel better and it is healthier! Good Luck!

  4. I agree with Raven, even if he is silent celiac he still cannot eat gluten- it is still doing damage. I am sure it is harder for silent celiacs since they feel OK, but Raven is right- that could be part of the reason he is in the hospital. Didn't the doctors tell him not to eat gluten?

  5. Congrats! We got diagnosed at the same time- my bloodwork and biopsy were done in August too and I started gluten-free 9/1/10. I just had my follow up bloodwork done also and all my levels were normal/negative except the Gliadin IGG- it was slightly positive still, but much closer to normal than it was in August (went from 131 to 51- positive is above 30).

I eat out and go to people's homes to eat all the time and had 5 known glutenings in the last 5 months (my mistakes, not theirs).

I guess my point is you should definitely try eating out, since my levels are normal for the most part I think it is possible to eat out and still be gluten-free.

    Congrats on your success!

  6. Sounds similar to my sister's Dr- when I was dx'd my sister went to her Dr to be tested and her Dr told her if she's not having any symptoms then she doesn't need to be tested! LOL

Anyway, she is going to a new Dr to get tested. What is up with these doctors? I would tell yours you want the celiac panel blood test to start.

  7. I agree that your body seems to be reacting well to the gluten-free diet, but I am sure you want a concrete diagnosis. I don't know if just being off gluten for 2 weeks can make that much of a difference in a negative vs positive blood test (I guess everyone is different). I had my first blood test 8/15 that was positive and they told me to stay on gluten for the biopsy 8/31, but I was feeling so crappy I went gluten-free and my biopsy was positive and they did another blood test then too and the levels were even higher than they were 8/15.

I do know that I was not totally gluten-free in those 2 weeks since I was new to it and had some mistakes, but my point is that I don't think 2 weeks would make a huge difference.

You could always have a biopsy, but if you feel better I would probably just stay gluten-free.

  8. I didn't buy any new cookware when I was diagnosed in September 2010 (per my Dr) and I just had all my levels tested 3 weeks ago and they are now in the normal range (except for IGG, but it is close to being in the normal range).

I would buy a new toaster though, I didn't becuse I don't eat toast or bagels or anything, but if I did I definitely would have.

Also, if you cooked a lot of pasta in a certain pot, I would probably get a new one for just gluten-free pasta because I have heard the film left from pasta can stick even after washing.

I do have a separate cupboard for my stuff in the house also.

    Good Luck!

  9. Last time I got tested my Ferritin was 4, but my iron was in the normal range (low side though). I still don't really understand how that is possible! Anyway, I take 65mg of Feosol per day and that is gluten-free. I need to get my iron tested again next week- I've been on the iron pills for a while.

I was never really tired at all though. If it weren't for the blood test I would have never guessed I was anemic.
