  1. If you did the biopsy now, you might not show damage anyway, as you have been on a gluten-free diet. If you were to get a biopsy, you would want to be eating gluten at every meal for months before-hand. The low-carb lifestyle may explain why you have been seemingly asymptomatic, and could also lead to a false negative on the biopsy. The biopsy just...
  2. New Grist is tasty. It had a very hops-y flavor...it was almost like a good micro-brew with a shot of sake in it. If you're a Bud guy, I don't know if you'll like it or not. I'm actually going to pick up a 6-pack of Bard's this weekend when I'm in East Lansing...I'll try to remember to post about it.
  3. It's hard to overdose on vitamins from natural sources because food sources rarely contain high enough concentrations of the vitamin. Though, a famous example is polar bear liver. It is unsafe to eat because it contains incredibly high levels of vitamin A. About Accutane: I was on Accutane several years back. I was 13, covered in cysts, and very depressed...
  4. Six months ago, I was offered a position in a bakery. I didn't take it because I had just started work somewhere else, but I can't imagine how junky I would have felt, breathing in flour constantly. I think there are just some jobs that are more hazardous with a food allergy/intolerance. Feel better!
  5. I am a Flint native, but I go out to Ann Arbor's Planet Rock on a regular basis. Usually I'm with people and I pack something, but this time it was just me and the gent, so we decided to Google some restaurants before heading out. There's a vegan restaurant in town with a good-size gluten-free menu called Jazzy Veggie...and they were surprisingly spectacular...
  6. is still trying to figure out this whole 'was I glutened?' thing.

  7. I am 4 months in and I'm still really variable on how much sleep I need. Sometimes I have to nap for four hours in the middle of the day after 9 or 10 hours of sleep at night. Actually, as long as he is smart about when he schedules his classes, he'll be ok. I don't schedule anything before noon unless I absolutely have to. (It was actually my...
  8. I get the gluten-free Chex and the gluten-free rice cakes, and more often than not they are gone before I even get to them. If it's a 'regular' food that just happens to be gluten-free, he's really bad about eating it. If it's an expensive food, he gets guilty enough to generally stay away unless I give him permission. I've actually taken to buying expensive...
  9. I'm glad your whole family is feeling better and relieved! It's always good to hear that the potential scariness of the lifestyle change is completely overshadowed by how much better everyone's quality of life is. My father was upset and hostile when I started my diet. He felt that this would somehow ruin my life...until he saw how much better I was feeling...
  10. I get issues from milk sometimes, but not usually cheese. I stopped having cereal with milk years ago, because I always had terrible stomach problems afterward. Now I know that it was probably a combination of the cereal and milk both irritating my stomach. I've just gotta sit on my hands for a few more months and see if my hormonal problems go away...
  11. I started a gluten-free diet shortly after Thanksgiving, and was on it for about 5 weeks. I was feeling a lot better, but decided to go off the diet for a week to see if I got ill. After four days I had to stop...I was dizzy, exhausted, nauseous, and depressed. My whole body hurt and I couldn't focus. It's been almost two weeks since I started the gluten...
  12. is on the challenge diet. Was I really this tired before? How did I do ANYTHING?

  13. In the past we have split the upfront membership cost of Sam's Club or Costco with friends and relatives. Then, the leader of the group compiles a list of foods each household needs, and picks it up. Everyone comes over and divvies up the 20lb. bags of green beans, etc. and splits the cost of the food. In Michigan, food stamps are on a card now called the...
  14. So, I'm a little over two weeks into the diet, and was feeling better until my period... My menstruation has NEVER been this bad before. Is this common?
  15. I just read on the Celiac Disease Foundation website that they recommend that you be on a daily diet of wheat consumption for a month before testing. Open Original Shared Link
  16. I am fiercely interested in the result of this poll, but am unable to vote myself, as I have never had a test.
  17. I thought about the vegetarian thing, because he was a vegetarian with one of his exes many moons ago. I think that perhaps meat is harder for a system to digest, and when you go vegetarian you eat nothing like it for a long period...Whereas, Celiac sufferers eat rice, corn and potatoes, which are similar foods. We aren't completely starchy-plant-free....
  18. I waited until after Thanksgiving, too. Several of us have about the same start date, then. I'm surprised...I haven't had a nap yet this week! I had gotten to the point where I couldn't make it through a whole day awake. People are very emotionally attached to their holiday rituals and holiday foods. My boyfriend's mother got unnecessarily upset...
  19. I've been trying to eat vegetables, whole grain rice, corn, and meat heavily. Up until the other day, I couldn't find a chocolate that didn't have either soy or dairy in it. My bf picked some of the 'Enjoy Life' chocolate chips, so I've got my chocolate fix now. I'm going to have a bit of a hard time giving up cheese and yogurt, but even if I get rid of...
  20. I'm about five days into the gluten-free diet. My stomach is doing crazy things that it hasn't done before, and I haven't had this many stomach problems since I was a child. I've read several posts on here that say that this isn't surprising, and not to worry. My boyfriend doesn't have Celiac Disease but wants to start the diet with me this week as moral...
  21. A lot of people act like it's a fringe-dieting thing, as if it's a *choice*. The way she acted is a lot like the way many people act towards vegetarians. Sadly, I think it's more ignorance than anything else.
  22. I'm only like 3 or 4 days in, but I've found gluten-y foods to be out of sight, out of mind. My bread-y/cracker-y/noodle-y items are in a drawer, and my gluten-free alternatives are on the counter. When I'm hungry, grab something on the counter.
  23. Apparently a new 'negligibly gluten-containing' wafer is on the market...though, it's probably not easy to get a hold of, and it still might cause problems. Strangely enough, I found out yesterday that in the Jewish faith you are not allowed to endanger your health to fulfill a commandment. That is very celiac-friendly.
  24. I think that some people feel the label, after all of those years of being told there was nothing wrong with them, is vindication. I lost my last job because I was so tired I couldn't get out of bed some days. I've lost boyfriends and strained relationships with my friends and family. I just want to be better. I don't care how I do it or what the disease...
  25. Do you think it matters if your skin products are gluten-free, if you don't have DH?
