If you're cooking with it, you can usually substitute any oil or grease. When backpacking, we use either bacon-grease or canola oil. It's worked for me in sauces, baked goods, and pretty much any time you aren't going to watch a pad of butter melt onto your toast.

ARCHIVED 3 Years gluten-free....or So I Thought!
Chiana replied to kdonov2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If it's truly triple-distilled and no additional ingredients are added back in, it should be safe, though it may give you the heeby-jeebies to drink it. (I avoid it whenever possible, just on the grounds of possible CC.) The problem is that companies add things back in, either as additional flavorings (Think flavored vodkas) or as per the nature of the... -
ARCHIVED What's Wrong With My 3 Year Old?
Chiana replied to teacherwheart's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I will preface this with "I'm not a mother", but has he still been on dairy? My niece is lactose intolerant and has terrible constipation issues from dairy. (The poor girl had to go off of breast milk. ) If you push stool softeners/laxatives, you can cause poor nutrient absorption, causing the skinniness/crankiness. The other possible issue is cross... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Understand Blood Test Results
Chiana replied to AussieAmanda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Having multiple vitamin deficiencies (unless you eat nothing but fast food) tends to point towards celiac disease, so it's good that you're already on the diet! B12 deficiencies can give you all sorts of uncomfortable tingling and sensation problems, so that's probably what your doctor has in mind. I had problems with an uncontrollable burning sensation... -
ARCHIVED B12 Deficiency Anemia?
Chiana replied to HopefulMama23's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The current recommended guidelines are 2500 mcg per day, if you suffer from pernicious anemia and take oral supplements. Personally, I think that the shot once a month is much much more effective than the daily doses...I've been getting them for years now. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Feel Like A Full Time Chef?!
Chiana replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Whenever I get irritated by how much time I spend preparing food, I think of how many people are getting horribly fat and unhealthy because they spend *no* time thinking about or preparing food. Also, I try to think about how it was 100 years ago when you had to pluck the chicken, there was no food processor, and the dishes were washed completely by hand... -
ARCHIVED Six Months Of Flakes In My Urine
Chiana replied to Chiana's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That's the thing...it doesn't hurt, and I haven't had a yeast infection. -
I've been passing lots of tissue-like flakes for the last several months. When I first went to my GP she ran a culture and found an infection. After two unsuccessful courses of antibiotics, I was sent to a urologist. He put me on two months of antibiotics, hoping that it was just something really hard to kick. Now that the drugs are all gone, I'm still...

ARCHIVED There's No Such Thing As A "dedicated Fryer"!
Chiana replied to CNV2855's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Disturbing, but true. Five Guys doesn't fry anything containing gluten, so we're safe there. At my old job, we had a self-contained frying unit that looked like a giant metal box. It filtered its own oil internally. If a company really wanted to, they could purchase a fryer box and fry gluten-free items in there, avoiding the need for community... -
ARCHIVED How To Face The First Year...
Chiana replied to Nova Scotian Celiac's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How well did you rinse the quinoa? If you don't rinse it really, really well, you'll give yourself a stomach ache and/or other digestive problems. :/ My list is similar, but also: corn tortillas flax seed crackers <-a little harder to digest but tasty and super high in good-for-you nutrients and fiber canned tuna and frozen fish fillets <-(Google... -
ARCHIVED Corn In My Tylenol >:o
Chiana replied to Newtoitall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Are you taking it with food and/or an entire glass of water? NSAIDs give most people stomach grief...it's just in their nature. -
ARCHIVED Eating Too Fast And Not Chewing Food
Chiana replied to jay88's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
No, that's silly. I know a lot of perfectly healthy people who eat the same way you do. It's not your fault. -
We use the same thing we use on ourselves. Any decent, inexpensive shampoo will do. I will say, though: don't wash your dog in the winter at all, and only wash him a few times in the summer. Washing dogs too often is very bad for their skin and coat.

Personally, I don't think grains are quite the villain people make them out to be, we just eat WAAAAY too much. If you were in a society pre-cereal cultivation, you would still eat things like wild rices from time to time, because it's in your environment and safe to eat. Would you eat it all the time? Probably not - probably only when food sources are...

ARCHIVED White Spots On Arms And Legs (Small Pigment-Spots) - A Symptom?
Chiana replied to 9na's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you ever gotten your b12 levels checked? B12 is involved in the creation of melanin, the substance that pigments your skin. My mum gets those little spots when she doesn't get her b12 shots. You can have a deficiency of b12 caused by Celiac disease, but that's not always the cause. Another less likely possibility: have you ever had an injury... -
ARCHIVED Thinking About Having A Little Dairy....
Chiana replied to WinterSong's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you were having problems with yogurt and cheese, that sounds more like a casein issue than lactose. (Though, I guess you could be having a response to the trace amounts of lactose that might still be in those products?) I have an obvious lactose thing: I can have yogurt and cheese with no problem, but a glass of milk will make me feel like junk for the... -
My father dumps all kinds of sugary foods into his system in an attempt to 'avoid' fatty, cholesterol-filled foods. His cholesterol levels suck. My mum is an Atkins enthusiast and avoids sugary carby foods, opting for steak smothered in cheese with a side of broccoli. Her cholesterol is amazing. For some reason he doesn't get it, or doesn't *want* to...

Cheese wouldn't work in the Paleo diet, which would leave you with lots of eggs to get your b12, etc. Are you averse to eating fish?

ARCHIVED Another B12 Question
Chiana replied to anna34's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Certain antibiotics and medications do crazy things to your b12 stores as well. Does he take any medications daily? I would let your husband know that unless he is a vegan or an alcoholic, he has a health problem that is causing the deficiency and should continue to get the shots. Nerve damage, vertigo and peeing yourself is no fun. If he wants to know... -
ARCHIVED Cipro By Cobalt (In Us) Is Gluten Free
Chiana replied to azgirl5's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There's a lot of corruption and under-funding involved with most FDA issues. -
ARCHIVED Another B12 Question
Chiana replied to anna34's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
He should get his injections really close together until his numbers get back to where they need to be, then get them twice a month or so. If you are getting the shots, you are completely bypassing the digestive system, which means that his low levels are from too few injections. Have they ever tested to see if it is truly pernicious anemia? -
The laws on that changed over a year ago. Pharmaceutical companies can't give away goodies anymore. My boyfriend's sister used to be a pharmaceutical rep.

ARCHIVED Another B12 Question
Chiana replied to anna34's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How often does he get the injections? The current guideline is once a month, but for a lot of people (including me,) it sometimes takes twice a month. Also, did he get the first several in very close succession when he started getting the injections? -
You can get gluten-free angel food cake. I saw one just the other day at the co-op grocery in East Lansing. You've just gotta know where to look.

I was really sad when I found out I couldn't have Clif bars anymore. But, if I wasn't out looking for an alternative, I never would have tried Larabars! My gent's big into backpacking and wilderness survival. Food is actually the last thing you worry about. You try to find/make drinkable water, shelter, and fire first. Number 1 cause of death in...
