ARCHIVED A Request For Those Who Suffer From Gluten Ataxia
Chiana replied to Ollie's Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If I consume a large amount of gluten, I feel as if I have been drinking, with everything that goes along with that. I can't focus on things (and certainly not more than one thing at once), my balance is horrible, and it feels like I am disconnected from the world. The most difficult part is that he could be suffering from enough cognitive impairment... -
ARCHIVED Recently In Hospital And Still Confused
Chiana replied to DonnaMM's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Are you aware that untreated celiac disease has been linked to several types of lymphoma? If they can not find evidence that your cancer has returned and is directly causing the problem, you certainly have several celiac disease red flags. (Note: Everyone has different deficiencies with this disease. My b12 was very low, but my folate, d and iron were... -

ARCHIVED 13 Year Old Sick All The Time :(
Chiana replied to audrey d's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Exercise is really good for helping to manage blood sugar. Would she be open to joining an athletic or exercise group? I know the local colleges/community centers around here offer drop-in yoga, pilates, etc. at free or cheap to the public. She could go when she is having a good day, and she could see if it helps her. Also, laxatives increase the transit... -
I've been on the diet for almost two years now, and I didn't realise how bad my hair loss was (I'm in my early 20s) until I stopped losing it a few months ago. I woke up one morning, got in the shower and thought about how strange it was that there wasn't any hair in the drain...or in my hair-brush...or all over my clothes. It just took almost two years...

ARCHIVED 4-Year Old Has Appointment Next But Should I Wait That Long?
Chiana replied to momofdarius's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If you let them know that he has blood in his stool they will probably get him in asap. In the mean time, has he been getting lots of water and enough fiber? Bright red blood is usually an indication of issues lower down in the digestive tract. It's not that uncommon to pass some blood if you're a little less than 'regular', or have not been drinking enough... -
ARCHIVED Niagara Falls & Niagara-On-The-Lake
Chiana replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
There is a little restaurant called Savoury and Sweet that I would highly recommend to anyone travelling in the area. They can make anything on their menu gluten-free, and are very knowledgeable. They can also direct you to a completely gluten-free bakery up the street that makes their bread-crumbs. I picked up a loaf of sour-dough bread, grasshopper cookies... -

ARCHIVED Everything Revolves Around Food!
Chiana replied to Huggenkiss27's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know exactly how you feel about this stuff. When I first meet coworkers, I generally just tell them I have a really bad allergy -- for some reason, people seem to understand that better. It's only later that I explain the full situation, when I've gotten to know them. I am always 100% compliant with my diet (I've found celiacs who cheat on the diet... -
ARCHIVED Gaining Weight And Growth
Chiana replied to jcollie800's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My buddy grew 3 inches between the ages of 18 and 21. It correlated with a much more nutritious diet. (He was eating more green vegetables and less processed food.) Just keep your eye on the prize - stick to gluten-free foods and eat your vegetables! -
Juice fasts can wreak havoc on your blood sugar, and it's especially rough if you are pre-diabetic or mildly hypoglycemic. They're not really a natural way to sustain yourself.

ARCHIVED Standards For Gluten Free Labeling

My biggest complaint was depression before I went gluten-free. It took about a year to completely resolve, but I am free and clear and don't need medications, like I used to. I will say, though, that I get a bout of depression whenever I get sick. If I get a really bad cold or the flu, I feel horribly depressed for the duration. Also, if I don't eat healthy...

ARCHIVED Questions Re Shared Toaster Oven, Initialisms
Chiana replied to KikiB's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When I did a challenge it was a slow, downhill progression of worsening fatigue, brain-fog, and depression. It wasn't any one thing, and I would feel better or worse in a fashion seemingly unconnected to what I had just eaten. All I knew was that after 4 or 5 days, I felt like I was carrying around a bag of bricks. For some of us, it is cumulative. -
ARCHIVED A Freedom Diet? Im So Lost!
Chiana replied to Dejibo's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I think, perhaps, the right next step would be to get really informed about food, and think through what you are trying to accomplish. You are cutting out a lot of foods, and feeling better, but some of those decisions are not necessarily consistent...you may be removing foods that are perfectly healthy and acceptable to you. -
ARCHIVED Brand New Yasmin Generic, Syeda
Chiana posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok, guys. There is a new company producing generic Yasmin, called Syeda. I got my prescription filled and there it was. I thought I would contact the company and find out if it was gluten-free and post it here, but apparently this is easier said than done. I emailed them and recieved an email saying that they are only willing to provide gluten content... -
ARCHIVED Burger King Fries Now gluten-free
Chiana replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I simply don't trust fast food joints with my health. Especially having worked fast food when I was younger, I honestly can't imagine that a piece of breaded chicken hasn't fallen into the 'fry' fryer during the lunch rush. Or that they bother to have two oil filters - or that they keep track of which is which, for that matter. Minimum wage does not breed... -
When I eat gluten I have the symptoms of IC. After several weeks of eating gluten-free it resolves. Are you sure you're not getting any contamination anywhere? A lot of those drinks that are gluten-free are really high in protein which is hard on your kidneys. Have you tried just buying a juicer and doing a carrot-spinach-strawberry mix, etc?
-
Good suggetions above. Have you tried a *high salt* diet? I'm serious - give it a try. I'm assuming you've gotten your b12 levels tested already?

It could be that you're getting glutened on a low-level by something you've been eating lately, or you're low on vitamin D - it is getting to be winter and less light = less vitamin d. -
ARCHIVED Neurological Symptoms And Gluten Free Diet?
Chiana replied to 175comet's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Pretty much all of my symptoms were cognitive/neurological. (When I was a child I had stomach problems, but they went away when I hit high school.) What finally drove me to start looking for a solution on my own was the crippling fatigue and inability to focus on things. My mother is in the same boat but hasn't come to terms with it - she feels much much... -

ARCHIVED Does Ocella Birth Control Make Anyone Else Sick?
Chiana replied to caberma's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is an adjustment period to birth control pills...so I wouldn't be worried just yet. It took me 2-3 months to fully adjust when I started Yasmin. For me it was a small price to pay to not be on my period for a month at a time.
