You are VERY smart to add fat, as many people don't know that you need fat to build muscle. But, you probably need to eat a little cleaner (drop the candy bars, and ice cream for starters) BREAKFAST: Go down to 1 slice of gluten-free bread and add a LEAN chicken sausage or turkey patty. DINNER: Drop the cereal and hit up a higher protein center-of...

ARCHIVED Trying To Tone And Get In Better Shape
GlutenGladi8or replied to alex11602's topic in Sports and Fitness
You would be surprised how many calories you can burn on a treadmill at a slow/moderate pace. And, it gives you an opportunity to check your heart rate continuously. If it's too high, take the rate down. Or, you can take the incline down. With an elevated heart rate like you, can I suggest that IF you watch TV while on the treadmill.... keep it off... -
Hi Nick: There IS a tried and true way of adding lean muscle to your body after being diagnosed. And the answer is protein, protein and protein. Well, don't over do it. Just try and include LEAN protein into your breakfasts, lunches and dinners. If you want to bulk like I have over the past 2 years, you'll probably want it to be about 30-40% of the...

ARCHIVED Constant Hunger After Some Hard Workouts
GlutenGladi8or replied to rain's topic in Sports and Fitness
Are you drinking a protein shake? (Presuming that you find one that fits your dietary needs and takes any allergies into consideration). One, quick shake and I'm not hungry for at least 90 minutes. And, I eat all day long! -

Congrats on figuring this out. Now, with the proper diet, get ready for take off! Your body will be absorbing the nutrients and protein at an accelerated rate. Since you speak of diet above, the most crucial building block for muscle is the lean protein that you'll need with nearly every meal. Do a search on my various posts and you'll list after list... -
ARCHIVED When You First Went Gluten Free, Did You Lose Weight?
GlutenGladi8or replied to Prezwilson15's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
That's the beauty of being diagnosed... your body absorbs the protein and nutrient that has been lacking. If you're trying to gain muscle and just newly diagnosed, prepare for take off! "Houston... we DON'T have a problem!" -
ARCHIVED When You First Went Gluten Free, Did You Lose Weight?
GlutenGladi8or replied to Prezwilson15's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I told a woman at the gym this morning that I had Celiac Disease. She said "oh... I'm SO sorry". My reply "Don't be sorry for me, it's been nothing but smooth flying AND body building". -
ARCHIVED When You First Went Gluten Free, Did You Lose Weight?
GlutenGladi8or replied to Prezwilson15's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I actually gained about 25 pounds. But they were 25 good (muscle) pounds. For years, my body was robbed of its ability to absorb the lean protein that I was consuming. That also goes for the multiple protein shakes that I was drinking. While gaining those pounds I also was able to decrease my body fat percentage (hovers right around single digit these... -

That is good news as well. Make sure you keep the pilates well rounded. (Mat + chair + reformer) -
First thing is first. Go to your doctor and get an annual physical (should be covered under your insurance). Make sure they do a blood test to see what may be missing or what areas might be spiking high. Based upon the results (usually take about a week), the doctor can make a recommendation as to what you should be taking as a supplement. The other...

There are a few things that I religiously take before my workouts: - BIG Bowl of blueberries with about a cup of 0% fat Greek yogurt - Green tea (two tea bags to make it strong) - gluten-free protein shake - AAKG (L-Arginine alpha-Ketoglutarate) It's a better substitute for N.O. Explode and will help give you those immediate pumps at the gym. - Large...

Aren't the post-Celiac-diagnosis days the bomb? I almost feel fortunate to be able to pack on so much muscle. But, then again, that's what we were missing in the past. -

Butter! Moderation of all things. You are SO correct about butter over margarine. And, just a small amount helps deliver the flavor. I really wish I knew why people opted for chemically made ingredients (Splenda, margarine) over the real deal. What a great thread this has turned out to be. -

Here's your to-do list: Dust off that library card We all pay tax dollars to support our local libraries, and they are LOADED with tons of books for you to check out (literally and figuratively). Go there and pick up 3-4 books that pertain to beginner routines. Many of them have fully illustrated pictures for you to follow. Stretch There is no doubt... -

I love it! REAL FOOD is the answer. And those REAL and GOOD fats are well needed. My weekly shopping habits actually required me to take a cabinet out of my kitchen (where packaged foods used to live) so that I could install an additional mini fridge for all of my lean meats, dairy, veggies, fruits, eggs, etc. And being the carnivore that I am, there... -
ARCHIVED Constant Twitching Calf Muscle! Does Anyone Have This?!

Question and possible solution. Q: What is your caffeine intake daily. Could be the culprit. PS: Try a half of banana (my fraternity brother is a doctor and this happened to me and he suggested this solution. Said that I was potassium deficient) -

Thankfully, you figured this out early on. Right on! And you are correct, low fat is the key (in addition to gluten free) I don't have a recommendation on a cookbook per se, but you just need to shop the golden horseshoe of the store first (produce, dairy, meat, fish, deli, and then frozen) Start your meal planning with a VERY lean selection of animal... -

Amen! High fives! Right on! Hallelujah! Here-Here! I'm glad those no absorption are behind me. The only downside is that I have to buy a bunch of new shirt that will fit my shoulders and arms. -
Maybe it's not the gluten. But, then again... with an ingredient statement the size of a manifest from a small regional jet... it could be any other their "other ingredients". * Calcium and Sodium Caseinate * Whey protein isolates and/or concentrate * Milk protein isolates and/or concentrate * Whey Peptides * L-Glutamine ...

Here's an analogy to a past trend and how it relates to the current diagnosis that we all have experienced. And, I may be dating myself. Do you remember when Entemann's came out with the first fat free cookie in the late 80's/early 90's? We all thought, well heck.... if it's fat free I can eat the WHOLE thing. And eat we/they did. But the pounds kept... -

A few quick things my fellow gym-goers: - Always stretch before lifting weights or exercising (whole body) - Always stretch after lifting weights or exercising (whole body) - Worry more about form and less about weight. Even if you have to use the bar by itself - Take glucosamine for those joints - Drink 80+ ounces of water a day -

Unless you have an egg allergy, you can include eggs into your diet for some killer protein. Egg white omelets or even a hard boiled egg before bed or as a snack. I may also recommend a protein shake for those "fill in" snacks. Keep eating LEAN protein and you'll pack on LEAN pounds. Keep us posted.
