ARCHIVED Symptoms Like Tourettes In Newly Diagnosed 9Yr Old
domesticactivist replied to Mummyto3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hm. It doesn't sound like DH to me, but I'm far from an expert. As I understand it, DH has distinct blisters like chicken pox or other herpes viruses. Could it be eczema? Eczema is common in areas like that and does itch horribly, and could have been irritated by her skirt like she said. It is also common in people with allergies. My son used to get it... -
ARCHIVED At A Loss For Recovery - Guidance Needed
domesticactivist replied to Syl's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Re cast iron, we striped ours in a self clean oven cycle, then reasoned it. We got rid of the stoneware. I think fodmap sounds like a good idea. We also had to do more than just be gluten-free to get better. We do the GAPS diet which is based On the SCD mentioned above. -

Oh, and buckwheat knocked me and my son on our asses, which was a shame because we made great pancakes with them. -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Celiac Diet
domesticactivist replied to nik95670's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes. Arrowroot is especially awful. We seemed fine with quinoa (soaked first) but eliminated it when we went on GAPS. I just read an article on here about how many alternate flours contain major crosscontamination. Scott posted it. The other thing is if you have a problem with corn, that could be affecting you. It's used to help powdery things flow, so it... -

I feel ya. Hang in there. Tea is not the same, though good in its own right. -

ARCHIVED Symptoms Like Tourettes In Newly Diagnosed 9Yr Old
domesticactivist replied to Mummyto3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter has had Tourette's since she was a toddler ( she's 12 now). We went gluten free in November but then put her back on for celiac testing (negative blood and genetics) then took her back off and our whole family did GAPS starting at the end of January. Her tics got worse at first gluten free but then improved. With the early stages of GAPS her... -
ARCHIVED Gaps Diet For Celiac And Leaky Gut
domesticactivist replied to health4life's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yep! All the recipes on my blog are GAPS legal (see my profile) but many of them are not for the early stages. We need to get on that. -
ARCHIVED Need Gluten, Dairy, Soy, Almond And Rice Free Treat Recipe
domesticactivist replied to Poppi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This is late but I figure you'd still like ideas for next time. What about macaroons? I have a recipe on our blog: They're even better with orange curd on top, but we haven't posted that recipe yet. You'll have to stay tuned till my partner gets around to writing it up! -
With all those chickens, we have lots and lots of eggs this time of year. One of my favorite ways to enjoy them is in a quick egg salad. This version celebrates Spring with an added kick from garden-fresh radishes. The deal with fresh eggs, is that if you want them boiled, you have to think ahead. If you boil a very fresh egg, you won't be able to peel...

The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
domesticactivist replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Pork chops, kale, carrots, and sauerkraut. We had some of last year's blueberries with homemade yogurt and crispy walnuts as a treat before dinner, too. The kale came from the garden and we realized when taking third helpings that there were caterpillars who got fried up with it! We probably ate a few of them, too! -
ARCHIVED How Long Should I Stay On Gluten Free Diet?
domesticactivist replied to danzn16's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Before going gluten-free, have you had a celiac blood panel done? If you go gluten-free, you will not be able to get good results without going back on gluten for a long time, and most people who experience improvement gluten-free wouldn't want to go back on gluten!!! I had migraines and migraine auras that were helped by being gluten free - but I actually... -
ARCHIVED Could Some Corn Intolerant People Help Me?
domesticactivist replied to Newtoitall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Watch out for arrowroot. My son and I both react to it dramatically. I don't know if it is cc'd or if it is a problem in itself. -
ARCHIVED Your Top Two Pieces Of Advice
domesticactivist replied to Korwyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah, maybe the moderators can add the list to the top and make it sticky. -
Today we went to the kids' piano recital and we didn't have our act together to bring food (they had lunch before and dinner coming after). We let the kids have plain fresh blueberries at the reception and nothing else - not the cakes, not the "gluten-free" cookies, not the fruit someone else cut up. There were some grapes on the counter (it was at my mom...

ARCHIVED Could Some Corn Intolerant People Help Me?
domesticactivist replied to Newtoitall's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
My son has a histamine reaction to corn (all stuffed up, "hay fever" symptoms, circles under eyes) as well as brain fog and fatigue. He gets the brain fog and fatigue with gluten but also gets joint pain and stomach aches, etc from it. -
ARCHIVED Elemental Diet - Hypoallergic Protein Free (Hospital) Formula
domesticactivist replied to CNV2855's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I like what the others had to say on this. I haven't tried it and don't know much about the elemental diet. The samples in the study were small - it would be interesting to see larger trials done. It strikes me that they were taking people who were not doing well gluten-free and then putting them on the elemental diet without trying basic things like eliminating... -
ARCHIVED What Were The Hardest Things To Find And Elminate?
domesticactivist replied to Newtoitall's topic in Super Sensitive People
I made a post about how to make the house gluten-free. Maybe some of the things I listed in there will be a shift. You should also search for Shauna's post on the subject - I can't remember which one, but she had stuff I hadn't thought of. As for pots and pans, we got rid of anything that wasn't in good shape and stainless steel. We stripped and reseasoned... -
ARCHIVED Do You Aim For Gluten Free Or Completely Grain Free?
domesticactivist replied to ErinP's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, GAPS is very close to both Paleo and SCD. The main difference is that GAPS takes a phased introductory approach and focuses on regular consumption of bone broth and home-fermented foods. The full GAPS program also includes detoxification and some supplementation. One of these days I'm going to make a proper post with the nuances pulled out. -
ARCHIVED Awful Taste In Mouth
domesticactivist replied to collgwg's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Did you eat pine nuts perchance? There is a thing called pine mouth that gives a metallic taste for a couple weeks. I get a horrible taste in my mouth - I had chronic bad breath and the horrible taste until we'd been on GAPS for a while. Introducing foods in, I realized that it is directly related to cheese. My bad BO is also cheese. If I have a tiny amount... -
ARCHIVED What Is Your Dream Career?
domesticactivist replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I am living the dream, too! I worked in software development as a young thing, then devoted myself 100% to being a mama. When the kids got a bit older and I got divorced I got back into the software world but from the management side. I lost that job with the economic downturn and took a breather to reevaluate. I knew I needed to work for myself. I am... -
ARCHIVED Do You Aim For Gluten Free Or Completely Grain Free?
domesticactivist replied to ErinP's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
We're totally grain free as well. We're actually doing the GAPS Diet. -
ARCHIVED How Long Do Waves Of Fatigue Continue?
domesticactivist replied to hopefulinmybody's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wonder if you are still getting cross-contaminated? You mention waves of fatigue which makes me think maybe you are periodically getting glutened. I made a post on how to really go gluten-free. Maybe it'll be helpful in getting you thinking of potential sources of cross-contamination. -
There are lots of gluten-free shampoo options, but I just want to put it out there that we switched to "no-poo." We use baking soda for shampoo, and rinse with apple cider vinegar. My hair is nicer that it's been even when using the fancy stuff. It's a lot less expensive!

That's so annoying and it's good you're venting. I do have to say, though... I had an apartment manager/friend/woman in my ward (I was LDS for a while... long story) who took it upon herself to come worry about me, and to this day I believe she saved my life. I was suicidally depressed and had stopped taking care of myself, going to work...
