  1. Do a search and you'll find some threads from me on both these things! My 12 yo daughter has Tourette's. She is not celiac (did blood and genetic tests) but we did get her to go gluten-free with the rest of the family. Her tics have been MUCH improved by the GAPS diet! She also had attention issues (though not hyperactive) and seems to have mood stuff...
  2. I was one of those people like your husband. I decided to go gluten-free purely for my son, because I didn't want to have stuff in the house he couldn't have. Out of the whole family, I had the worst time going gluten-free than anybody! Here is just a small list of what my suffering entailed: - constant HUNGER - constant craving of sweets - major...
  3. A agree it makes sense to visit a doctor and see if there are other possibilities for conditions that you should look into. You say everything you eat is from Whole Foods and says gluten-free on it, but Whole Foods has lots of processed crap, and gluten-free only means "tested to have less than 20 ppm gluten." Our family eliminated all grains and stopped...
  4. Hi and welcome, Even if you don't ever feel sure you have celiac, you can certainly stay around here. No one has kicked me off yet! (See signature and my blog (from profile) for the details if you're interested). Were the costs you cited for the blood test or the scope, or both? If you can get the blood panel before going gluten-free (reintroduce gluten...
  5. The difference here is that the kid with allergies who attends a party CAN NOT ENJOY ANY OF THE FOODS OFFERED. People eating SAD diets should not freak out that you don't want to bring a Domino's Pizza, gluten cake, and ice cream your 5 year old can't eat into your home for them. Guests should be gracious enough to entertain the possibility that the allergen...
  6. At the kids' birthday parties we let them pick the menu. Our daughter just had her birthday and we were still in the GAPS Intro. She didn't miss a beat - she just picked her favorite things that we'd been eating and that was the menu! Here's what she picked: Dinner: Ground Beef Patties Roasted Beets Homemade Pink Sauerkraut Yogurt Dessert: Almond...
  7. What kind of allergies are they? IgE, IgG, IgA?
  8. Agreed! Our pharmacist caught that our dr had prescribed 10xs the correct dose of xyzal for our son, and combined it with a med with side effect of suicide despite our mental health history. Not only had she done that, she'd given us samples which we'd been giving him and he'd been sleeping so hard that he couldn't be woken! She also failed to notice that...
  9. If it is an IgE reaction, (histamine), you are reacting to the casein protein, not the lactose. Lactaid would not help with that. I agree that it might ruin a good day. Could you test it before hand? If you really want their smoothies and decide to have it anyway, how about asking for a very small glass?
  10. Jenn, I know exactly how you feel. We're on GAPS and now that we're on the full diet cheese and dates and other fruit is in the house. My partner has always been a salty/fat craver and she's having NO problems. My kids want to go crazy like me but we can just tell them that's enough. But *I* suffer! I am so much better off if the stuff that's not good for...
  11. A note on boiled eggs - if you are using fresh eggs, leave them out on the counter for a couple days before boiling them. Otherwise they are nearly impossible to peel! There are other tricks like oil in the water, but letting them breathe a bit works best.
  12. Our son's ELISA showed reactions to all his favorite foods. We were not surprised to learn that with a leaky gut, the body will have IgG reactions especially to just about anything you eat. That's why we're now trying to heal our guts with the GAPS Diet. According to the theory, once the gut is "sealed," many of the food reactions will go away. Dr. Natasha...
  13. It is a sad state of affairs that many people live in "food deserts" where there just isn't good access to real food. I know it's the truth and awareness is starting to build and I'm hoping we can change that for the better. Chickens, though, are really easy to raise just about anywhere. Are you sure there are no local farmers or individuals raising chickens...
  14. Oh, and we can definitely tell the difference between our eggs and store eggs. We can also tell the difference between our less stressed, best fed, top of the heap chickens and their bottom of the pecking order sisters. Also - when you see "vegetarian fed" on chicken eggs, I don't see how that makes any sense. Our chickens love bugs, worms, offal, kitchen...
  15. We grow our own, but on the occasion we need more we also buy local from an organic farmer or friend. It *is* more expensive (around here they go for $6.50, though when we sold ours, we only charged $4.50 and still made a profit). There are a lot of good reasons to eat home-grown and organic eggs. I've seen better articles than the ones linked below, but...
  16. I'm really wary of anyone hawking supplements. Studies have shown that many of the supplements on the market don't even contain what they say they contain, because the labeling laws are not as strict or as enforced as on plain old food. We have started supplementing three things, with good effects: Fermented Cod Liver Oil (the fermentation is important...
  17. Yes! Oh, and we have a 4 part series chronicling how to make homemade sauerkraut on our blog. We've learned lots from the book Wild Fermentation!
  18. The way these kids are treating you is unacceptable and definitely not Christian. I think the youth pastor needs to know about this. Maybe, without it being about you, there can be a series of sermons about what it means to be a friend, or coping with chronic disease, or something similar. As far as educating them about celiac - is there a doctor or other...
  19. That's one of the main ideas behind the GAPS diet we're doing. Try reading the gut and psychology syndrome book. I've also posted a lot about it here.
  20. fyi, I had my first (and only) migraine since going gluten-free a couple weeks ago. It was the morning after having balsamic vinegar for the first time since starting GAPS. I think the sulfites combined with a lack of sleep set it off.
  21. I'm so guilty of this. Maybe you can find another outlet? We started a blog where we can talk as much as we want about it (link on my profile) Maybe another outlet would help you?
  22. I felt that way a lot at first. Fortunately my partner was really committed, and I had my little boy to think about setting an example for. We also had friends who were aware of our dietary changes. The social pressure helped me stay on track as I got through my withdrawals. Is there anyone in your life who will act as someone to hold you accountable?...
  23. Welcome. I second the advice to get the kids tested! As for how to start - in our family we decided to all go gluten-free, at least at home. That really simplified things. Then, once we learned more, we decided to go truly 100% gluten-free as a family and took it a few steps further with the GAPS diet to help restore our gut health. It is possible to maintain...
  24. My son kept getting glutened and I had an awful time going gluten-free until we deep cleaned our kitchen replaced or reseasoned old pots and pans got rid of old appliances/mixers/etc got rid of wood and plastic that we had before being gluten-free stopped eating anything we didn't prepare in our own kitchen Started the GAPS Diet I've posted our story...
