  1. Ok. Just want to say that I'm getting my information from only one source, but here goes. Gliadin is a protein in gluten. You have tested positive for an antibody to the protein in gluten, which means that your immune system thinks that gluten is like a virus and will attack it. Testing positive for antibodies to transglutaminase means that your...
  2. I was SO in your shoes just a few weeks ago. I started a topic on here along the lines of doc says celiac, I'm unconvinced. Aaaaaaaand, I got all the same answers you are getting. It was frustrating and infuriating. Do these people NOT REALIZE what a PITA going on this diet is going to be? Do they not KNOW how much this will disrupt MY life? I mean...
  3. Maybe I'll call the doc to find out what the latest thyroid results were and ask about the symptoms I continue to have. You all aren't the only ones that don't want me taking that peppy pill. My running partner is beside herself that I cannot take it due to my diet. The thing is those pills make me feel NORMAL. I can't tell you how productive...
  4. Well, then, I wonder what ingredient in there has gluten if that one doesn't. I called and they said it wasn't gluten free, after spending 3 weeks researching it. I have my thyroid checked regularly to make sure my meds are at the correct dosage. Still doesn't remedy the tiredness and my inability to ever feel warm.
  5. I take a prescription prenatal multi-vit, so I should be ok on the vit front. Also, I've been tested for my vit d levels and they are always normal. I can't deny that I don't always make the healthiest choices in my food consumption, but even when I do eat well, it doesn't make a difference. Additionally, on the two occasions that I was given a B1...
  6. I'm so bummed to discover that the pills I just started taking have gluten in them. These pills have been a lifesaver for me. They are marketed as diet pills, but, really, they are just a bunch of stimulants. I do need to lose weight, and that would be great if they worked in that regard, but the amount of energy and motivation I have when taking them...
  7. I also found this: https://www.celiac.com/articles/22052/1/Could-a-Virus-Trigger-Gluten-Intolerance-Rates-Double-Among-Finns/Page1.html which states: "Gluten intolerance arises from an autoimmune reaction in the small intestine to the gluten protein found in wheat, barley and rye." and: "The researchers are hoping to use the genetic information...
  8. You mean this? "The study, to be published early online Feb. 9, points to two chemical signals -- interleukin 15 and retinoic acid, a derivative of vitamin A -- as triggers for the inflammatory response to gluten, a protein found in many grains that causes celiac disease." Sounds to me that they are talking about gluten intolerance that can lead to...
  9. I haven't read that anywhere. My reading (and I only got my information from Healthier Without Wheat) suggests that gluten intolerance involves an immune response that involves JUST AS MUCH RISK as the one from celiac. The only difference being in celiac disease the immune system also attacks the villi. Any sort of chronic inflammation (which would also...
  10. Based on what I've read, it can cause as much damage if you are non-celiac gluten-intolerant. You will still trigger an immune reaction - just not to your villi. If you are gluten intolerant, your immune system puts on an attack to the gluten you've ingested. Celiac is just another form of gluten-intolerance - not necessarily a worse form of it. Damage...
  11. Sorry! I didn't see the other post that asks pretty much the same exact question. I would delete this if I could.
  12. Granted, I haven't started the diet yet (just one more week!), but I was thinking as I was downing a sweet roll at Golden Corral that I might just take the consequences of being glutened by eating one of those rolls. Obviously, I have no idea how bad being glutened will be for me, but I'm wondering if I'll cheat and deal with the consequences. Drinking...
  13. I also want to say that I'm fairly new to this, so the others might have more to say. I am reading a book called "Healthier Without Wheat" and it has been extremely enlightening, and pretty much where I'm getting all my information from. I strongly suggest you read it.
  14. Did the transgultaminase tests come back positive? Just because they didn't find it doesn't mean it's not there. Plus, celiac is just one "symptom" of gluten intolerance. Celiac is just gluten intolerance with villous blunting or atrophy. If he has gluten intolerance, he still will have ALL the same risks in terms of his general health and well-being...
  15. I think this is a very narrow-minded point of view and you might do yourself a favor by reading "Healthier Without Wheat." I also think that you might have too much faith in the medical profession and on tests that are acknowledged to be imperfect. I'm not sure what your reasoning is behind your possessiveness over the "celiac" diagnosis. In fact, celiac...
  16. I'm so sorry you have a sh!t doctor. But it sounds to me like you DO know for sure. I don't think you need a doc to tell you what you already know and have experienced. I'm very lucky in that I am pretty sure my GI doc would diagnose me with celiac based on the diet alone. He seems to be "in the know" about gluten introlerance. I'm reading a book called...
  17. I agree - you should find a new doc. You two are obviously not on the same page and she's made it clear that she doesn't trust you. And, I think your DH could use some education as well.
  18. I'm guessing it's something you ate. Red blood in stool means that it would be coming out of your colon - and most likely closer to your anus (think hemorrhoids). Any blood that comes from the small intestine will be black as tar in your stool.
  19. I actually fear not being able to tell the difference. I want to notice a huge difference in energy at the very least. On the other hand, it is nice to not have such harsh reactions if cross-contaminated or otherwise glutened. I am not so sure I would be able to be so stringent without some physical reason for doing so. If I don't notice a difference...
  20. Just because a doctor doesn't diagnose you doesn't mean you DON'T have celiac. There are SO MANY people with UNDIAGNOSED diseases because medicine is not a perfect science. Not only are docs apt to err, but the tests themselves aren't 100% accurate. You can find that information practically anywhere. I am in full agreement that people need to take their...
  21. Here's the thing, I keep getting "signs" that I may not have celiac. The biopsy tested positive. Negative transglutaminase, positive IgA gliadin, negative IgG gliadin. Here's what I just found in a book given to my by my brother, "Healthier Without Wheat" by Dr. Stphen Wangen, The Gluten-Free Doctor: "The fact that a biopsy reveals villous atrophy...
  22. ...or maybe I'm just a disgusting pig. I just had a box of cocoa fall from the shelf and explode on my counter. I only used water and a sponge to clean it up. That's just how I roll.
  23. I understand where you both are coming from. I was just on this board a week ago, trying to find ways around the test results, which I just didn't want to believe. Even now, I think that maybe I can go back to gluten if I challenge it and nothing happens. I drove around for an HOUR crying after going grocery shopping and realizing that I can no longer...
  24. What kind of pain are you experiencing? I had a gallbladder issue and it was AWFUL! I'm just wondering if you should go to your doc to check up on other issues. Gallbladder problems should be easy to rule out with an ultrasound.
  25. I'm new to this and actually haven't started the diet yet, but...do we REALLY need to worry about this? I mean, do the counters and sink really need to be cleaned any more than they were before? I don't really pay much attention to cleaning the sink and counters or stovetop. I'll just wipe them down, often just with water. I will have a dual or mixed...
