  1. Are you cooking for yourself or a family? If you're cooking for a family (or like having leftovers to freeze) I highly recommend Make it Fast, Cook it Slow. I cook from this book at least 3 nights a week and will often have 2 crock pots going at the same time with a main course and a side dish or dessert.
  2. We had a wonderful holiday. Granted I cooked and hosted all but one of the meals and that one was hosted by my gluten-free mom so it was all good. The only slip up was when my mom and I made Nanaimo Bars. She brought most of the ingredients and it wasn't until a week after they were made and I was trying to pinpoint the source of my fatigue and brain fog...

    ARCHIVED Red Robin

I've had great experiences at Red Robin. Last time I went I had a burger with cheese, avocado, tomato and I think bacon on a lettuce bun and fries from a dedicated frier. The closest RR is almost 2 hours away but I'll make the trip if the Canadian locations get Udi's buns.
  4. For me it's the burning pain in my back. The emotional stuff passes pretty quickly for me and even the fatigue and nausea is gone in a week but the horrible burning pain in my back and neck can last for months. And nothing helps.
  5. I did that a couple of times too. On one memorable occasion I tasted a spoonful of vegetable noodle soup before I gave it to my daughter. Hubby and I were feeding the kids right before we set out on a weekend away so I panicked! I immediately did the only thing I could think to do and induced vomiting. I don't cook gluten at all. We are lucky enough to...
  6. I like the Kinnikinnick crusts. They are thicker than I would have liked in my gluten days and my son thinks they are a bit sweet but the texture is great and I really like them.
  7. On the outside I look very healthy. I'm a healthy weight, I'm tall, I have great skin. I have ZERO outward signs on celiac. However I live with daily chronic pain. It is better than it was when I ate a gluten diet and I have more energy but the reality is that I feel like a 70 year old woman living in a 35 year old body. Nobody can see that from the outside...
  8. So many things! Breakfast: Protein shake/smoothies Udi's or Glutino Genius bread toasted with nutella or an egg Gluten Free Honey Nut Chex Bob's Red Mill gluten-free Oats or Steel Cut Oats (if you can tolerate oats) and of course my daily morning milky chai. Lunch: Throw a corn tortilla in a lightly oiled cast iron pan, top with leftover...
  9. My breakfasts are usually: 1. A protein shake 2. Bob's Red Mill Steel cut oats with milk and brown sugar 3. Greek yogurt with berries and a sprinkle of Udi's granola 4. A fried egg and cheese on toasted Udi's bread. I can tolerate oats though.
  10. Tonight was fish tacos...mmmmmmmm. So good! Tomorrow night is coconut beef in the crock pot served over rice with steamed brocolli.
  11. My YAY products: Udi's white sandwich bread - it's the only decent bread available locally Udi's Cinnamon raisin bread - YUM! Udi's Hot dog and hamburger buns - again, not perfect but the best I've found Kinnikinnick KinniToo cookies - mine have always been perfect, not stale at all Kinnikinnick S'moreables and S'moreables crumbs - perfect graham...
  12. This is exactly why there are trigger locks on the guns and locks on the gun cabinets and I don't know any of the combinations. If I get cc'd then I've got a brief but intense period of feeling extremely emotional and weepy. If I get seriously glutened then I can feel extremely depressed for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. It's tough. All...
  13. Fair enough. When I'm looking at the everything-free cookies that cost $7 for a box of 6 I try to remind myself that there are people who are extremely thankful that these cookies exist for their kids (or themselves). It's a petty pet peeve especially since I am able to make pretty much everything from scratch anyway. I should just be thankful I can...

    ARCHIVED No Fair!

That sucks. I would have myself a serious cry if my body started rejecting dairy. I can't drink coffee. I feel glutened for 3-4 hours if I do. I have honestly found going without coffee almost as hard as being gluten free. Obviously it's easy to avoid but I don't drink alcohol so coffee was my social drink (not to mention my delicious way to wake up in...
  15. I do have another pet peeve actually. I would like to go to the store and buy some gluten free cookies/bread/cereal/cake mix/snacks/frozen meals. Not gluten free, corn free, dairy free, egg free, organic, vegan, fat free, peanut free, seed free and fair trade. It's not that any of those other things are bad but I get annoyed when all the "special diet...
  16. Being scared to travel. My husband and I have dreamed for many years of travelling extensively in Asia. Our oldest kids will be leaving home soon and we had hoped to start travelling with (or without) the two youngest in the next few years. I've realized that eating in Asia will be so difficult. No street food, huge language barrier, ingredients in CJK...
  17. This is one of my paranoias. My DH and I have had dreams of travelling extensively in Asia but I just don't think I can eat safely there. Europe seems safer to me but I will still have to learn "oats, barley, wheat, malt, spelt etc etc" in 10 or so languages. lol
  18. This has a "Gluten Free" label on it at the grocery store so I bought it without really looking at it (dumb, I know). Then I read the ingredients when I got home and found "Glucose solids (corn or wheat)". That made me nervous so it sat in my cupboard for a few months. Last night I looked it up and found that glucose solids from wheat are considered to...
  19. I've been tempted but I still haven't actually given in. I don't have an "official" diagnosis so I keep thinking that maybe once I've been 1 year gluten free I'll have a croissant or an egg roll or a burger from my favourite burger place and see what happens. I'm pretty sure I won't do that to myself though. I am far too scared of being sick.
  20. Oooooh, thank you. I rely heavily on Pamela's to make pancakes, quick breads and biscuits for my kids. I bought 3 4-lb bags when I was down in the states this summer but I'm almost out and it's $9 for a 1 1/2 pound bag up here which is far too expensive. I'll definitely be trying your mix. I've never seen buttermilk flour anywhere here, could I substitute...
  21. I would just accept your results as a positive test for now. My 6 and 2 year olds are gluten free, in part because I needed a gluten free house to feel safe and in part because I was convinced that they had gluten issues. My family doctor refused to test them because I never had a full testing and therefore didn't have a problem as far as she was concerned...
  22. Yay for ovulating!!
  23. I've had fantasies about having 1 gluten binge day and just dealing with the fallout but I don't think I'll ever do it. I have to say though, if I was going to eat gluten it sure wouldn't be donuts or cookies, I can make perfectly good gluten-free versions of those. I fantasize about croissants, fresh baguette with melty brie, sourdough bread dripping...
  24. It's Indian Night/Deep Fryer Friday Pakoras with chutneys (mango and tamarind) Aloo Gobi (Cauliflower and Potato curry) Masoor Dal (Curried Lentils) Butter Chicken Jasmine Rice Caramel Custard for dessert (It's in the oven now and making my house smell all nice and custardy).
  25. Have you considered returning to an omnivore diet?
