ARCHIVED How Long Till You Can Truly Cope With Celiac?..
navigator replied to tigerlily83's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know that it's really overwhelming at first, but it does get easier. I was diagnosed eight and half months ago and it's really just part of my life now. I no longer find the gluten free lifestyle difficult or feel that I'm missing out. Probably the best bit of advice I can give you is (if you don't already do so), to get cooking and baking and you'll find... -
ARCHIVED Is Toasting Bread Time Consuming?
navigator replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thanks! Unfortunately got a wee virus so not able to celebrate it yesterday. Hopefully at the weekend I'll have a couple of drams of my favourite malt - Highland Park from Orkney- and my first taste of gluten-free haggis. -
ARCHIVED A Farewell... Beating My Symptoms
navigator replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Glad that you're feeling better and took the time to say goodbye and give your reasons rather than disappearing. It's now eight and a half months since my diagnosis and I've improved significantly. I think I'm maybe about 80% there and I'm hoping that if I continue to improve the way I have been that it won't be too long before that's 100%. I found it difficult... -
ARCHIVED Cross Contamination?
navigator replied to BrittLoves2Run's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My house is completely gluten free. My husband eats gluten out of the house but at home he is gluten free to ensure that there is no cross-contamination. My son-in-law does the same. It's a huge issue and will prevent healing taking place. It's a steep learning curve and a lot for you and your family to get your heads around. I found the cross-contamination... -
ARCHIVED Is Toasting Bread Time Consuming?
navigator replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I've just toasted bread I made on Monday and it's a beautiful golden brown! I normally just keep enough bread to do 2 days and freeze the rest but I had enough left to do two slives at lunch today. There's the trick - eat fresh first 2 days and keep to the third for perfect toast -
ARCHIVED Is Toasting Bread Time Consuming?
navigator replied to love2travel's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I make my own gluten free bread now and I've noticed similar - although I haven't timed it!! I stick it in twice and then the crust has gone brown but the rest hasn't. The texture changes enough to feel like toast rather than bread but still pale. Thought it was just my baking!! -
ARCHIVED Booked In For Endoscopy! Argh!
navigator replied to *charliesmum*'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I took the sedation and was totally unaware of the whole thing. My daughter also had sedation so unable to be of much help. Relaxation breathing the only thing that I can think about - other than scouring all your family and friends until you get a lift! Hope it goes well. -

ARCHIVED Just Got The Phone Call!
navigator replied to BrittLoves2Run's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I hope your Mum pays more attention to you than I did to my daughter! My daughter was diagnosed in March 2009 and immediately told me I should be tested. I had been very ill at the end of 2008 and my ferritin was 4. I picked up a bit but was never 'well' (just didn't realise I was ill). I then went downhill again in summer of 2009, thought I was anaemic again... -
ARCHIVED Are You "self Diagnosed"?
navigator replied to BrittLoves2Run's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Standard medical advice is that you should stay on gluten until you have scope to prevent false negatives. Do you know how long the waiting list is where you live? I originally went off gluten when I got positive blood test as I decided not to have scope. However due to employment difficulties and to rule out other issues, I changed my mind. I'd been strictly... -

ARCHIVED Swollen Hands
navigator replied to Duhlina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I get swollen hands but I've always put it down to water retention. Who knows, this could be one more of so many things that I'm discovering has to do with coeliac disease.! -
ARCHIVED Are You "self Diagnosed"?
navigator replied to BrittLoves2Run's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm diagnosed by blood, endescopy and biopsy. However, if you respond positively to going gluten free I would say that your body has done your diagnosis for you! I think that regardless if the diagnosis is 'official' or self-diagnosed it makes sense to adopt a strictly gluten-free lifestyle. Our bodies so often know better than the doctors!! I've noticed... -

ARCHIVED College Student Just Diagnosed
navigator replied to DaVille06's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welcome to the forum. When I was first diagnosed this forum provided me with so much information - and that's still ongoing! The gluten-free lifestyle is difficult at first but I'm eight months down the road and I rarely have difficulty now. If you're rushing about at college, being organised in advance will be a great help. The days of feeling hungry and... -

navigator replied to natgirl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welcome to the forum, natgirl. This forum is not only great for information but also a haven when things are not going so well. You know that you can come on here and that there are friends waiting to give you advice, assistance, understanding and a good giggle! I discovered it the day after my diagnosis and in those first few months when I was struggling... -
Welcome Scotslass. I live in Lanark so not too far from you. I was only diagnosed last May so you're way ahead of me in the coeliac lifestyle! I made my first gluten-free loaf today and it wasn't too bad for a first attempt and better than any that I've bought. I guess it'll all be second nature to you now. Any restaurant recommendations for the next time...

Prior to my endescope I was advised that the minimum amount of time that you have to go back on gluten is 6 weeks but the general consensus on this forum seems to be 2 to 3 months. I know that it's a thought to go back on gluten but if you don't you could get a false negative.

I would find another dentist. When I was diagnosed I informed my dentist and they put it on my notes. When I went in for a check-up it was the first thing that they said to me and ensured me that they had checked their products and the gloves that they would wear whilst doing my check-up and clean. Try phoning round other dentists in your area and discussing...

ARCHIVED Another Question
navigator replied to looking for info's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I drink wine and malt whisky. When I was originally diagnosed I thought that I wouldn't be able to drink malt due to the barley but on investigating with Coeliac UK I was delighted to find that it's safe! As for eating out I tend to get a bit anxious if I'm going to a restaurant which I haven't been to before but I explain to the waiting staff and usually... -
