ARCHIVED Has Anyone Experienced One Or Some Of These Mental Health Issues?
bartfull replied to L.O.C.T.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OCD here. Depression in the past, but I think that was more due to the birth control pills I was on at the time. Perfectionism? Well, that goes along with the OCD. Everything has to be balanced. Everything has to come out even. Asymetry drives me crazy. Now, if you'll pardon me, I have to go wash my hands again. -
Still no word yet. I think I know now why he suggested the vegan diet. He's a Seventh Day Adventist, and although I didn't know this before, they believe in vegetarian and/or vegan diets. I did read a study by the National Institute of Health that said they followed a bunch of Seventh Day Adventists for years, some who ate meat and some who didn't, and...

ARCHIVED Hubby Doesn't Want Me To Talk About It Anymore
bartfull replied to Aly1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are many gluten free protein powders on the market. If you can have dairy, they make a great milkshake. My friend with cancer who had gotten down to 77 pounds started drinking them and she gained eight pounds in two months. -
Had the blood drawn this morning at our beautiful new hospital. Someone had told me that there was one lady who could draw blood absolutely painlessly. She was the one I got, and I honestly didn't even feel the pressure, let alone the sting. Not that that matters, but I just wanted to give her credit. They said the tests would be completed today and sent...

Here is a scholarly article from Wiki that ells how they get most of the citric acid used in foods: Open Original Shared Link Most of the pectin found in commercial jams and jellys comes from corn too. It's EVERYWHERE!

Well, if you ever want to eat meat again, I suggest you DON'T read this. The stuff they use in pricessing meats is enough to make me want to turn vegan! And most of the stuff does not have to be labeled. But they use citric acid in those soaker pads (and a lot of other things). And the citric acid they use is most often corn derived. Here's the...

PricklyPear, thank you! I went to their website and although they don't sell them in South Dakota, I can order them online. They look like just what I need!

And here's one about the soaker pads: Open Original Shared Link

I know I wasn't the one you asked, but here is a link to one of the many corn forums out there that talks about corn in paper products: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Hubby Doesn't Want Me To Talk About It Anymore
bartfull replied to Aly1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Maybe the reason your husband doesn't want to talk about it anymore is because he feels helpless. You say he does the cooking so that shows he is trying, but because you are still sick, he feels like he is failing. Even a best friend can sometimes get tired of hearing about our problems, especially when they can't make it all better. Let him know how much... -
I had a great day yesterday. My friends gathered for our weekly jam session and the music was great. I played my banjo, and that always cheers me up. Today I am going to my friend Kelly's and clean her house so when she gets home from Germany she will come home to a clean, comfortable house. (She is in Germany for cancer treatment.) The reason the doctor...

Yes! You could definitely, or should I say PROBABLY be reacting to the HFCS. I am super sensitive to corn in any form. I have even reacted to the new plastics made with corn. That would be the crystal clear plastics that individual serving bottled water comes in (as well as sodas), and even canned food now comes with the corn based plastic lining. I think...

So I have this recurring jaw pain that no one has been able to diagnose. I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago so he could write a prescription for a gluten free/corn free/salicylate free painkiller to be made at a compounding pharmacy. He wanted to see me again so we made an appointment that I kept today. I really like this guy, I think. He spent...

ARCHIVED Just A Vent- In Laws Are Making Fun Of Celiac
bartfull replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not sure, but I'm guessing the reason so many people are uncomfortable with our disease, (and I think that's why they make fun of it - because it makes them uncomfortable), is because they feel guilty. Yes, guilty. Before I went gluten free I knew people who were really into eating healthy. I have many friends who are vegetarian, and I know others who... -
My psoriasis stays in check when I eat nothing but whole foods. Gluten makes it flare up, and corn makes it REALLY flare up. I suspect there are other things too. It flared up badly when I took aspirin so I thought I had trouble with salicylates, but it seems that my tolerance to salicylates is high enough that I can eat broccoli. (Aspirin has about 100 times...

ARCHIVED I Had Hoped To Never Return To This Place
bartfull replied to zus888's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Add my voice to those who wish they could help. I just started a thread the other day about how much I hate this diet because I hate to cook. I never used to cook! Restaurants, frozen pizza, and grocery store fried chicken were mainstays. Now I have to cook every day. I have to think about everything I put in my mouth. I HATE it! And New Years Eve, a friend... -
ARCHIVED I'm Tired Of Cooking!
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Holy cow, Skylark! I've been using this computer for years now, but I never even thought to look for something like that! (Blame it on brain fog? ) I KNOW I can do some of those recipes without screwing them up too much. You all may have had to drag me into the kitchen kicking and screaming, but now that I'm there, your guidance and understanding just might... -
ARCHIVED Corn Problems?
bartfull replied to bbdailey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Some people CAN tolerate processed corn but not whole corn. Some are the opposite and have no trouble with whole corn, but can't tolerate the processed stuff. And then there are people like me who are extremely sensitive to corn in any form. (No wonder it takes so long to figure our diets out!) -
ARCHIVED I'm Tired Of Cooking!
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Thank you all for the great suggestions. Some of them I can't use because of the *%#@* corn, but I think I'm in a better mood today and feeling a bit less whiney. (It doesn't hurt that I sold a VERY expensive guitar today, and to a guy who plays so well that I know the GUITAR will be happy too. Gotta love those unexpected after Christmas sales!)) The crockpot... -
ARCHIVED Corn Problems?
bartfull replied to bbdailey's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My corn reactions take between eight and twelve hours. But we are all different. That citric acid wash made from corn is also used on bagged salads and other "pre-washed" veggies. Baby carrots are washed in this stuff, and some brands even dust their frozen vegetables with corn starch to keep them from sticking. Anything that is vitamin fortified, such... -

Crockpot? I have one of those but I've never used it. To be honest, I forgot I had it. Maybe that'll help. (Could someone come wash it for me when I'm done? ) -
ARCHIVED I'm Tired Of Cooking!
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Restaurants are out. I live in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. The restaurants here are not gluten savy at all, and with corn being a problem for me too, I just wouldn't trust them. The nearest Applebee's is 60 miles away. What I usually do is cook enough for two or three days. I try to keep the pots and pans to a minimum. I use the Foreman grill a... -
ARCHIVED I'm Tired Of Cooking!
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I guess working seven days a week isn't such a good idea. I suppose I could do something like that when I get home at 9PM, but by then I'm ready for bed. Heck, I'm already ready for bed by the time my morning coffee is finished! -
I have never enjoyed cooking. When I had step kids and a husband I used to have to cook, but I never enjoyed it. Now after being single again for many years, the restautrants just loved me. Sometimes I would cook for myself - if you can call heating a frozen pizza cooking! Since going gluten and corn free in June, I have had to cook all of my meals...

ARCHIVED Winter Projects And Goals?
bartfull replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Aw, I'm just being a whiner. Yeah, I haven't been feeling great, but mostly I'm just tired. I have a good friend who has cancer. Now SHE'S got a reason to complain. This past week or so has been tiring because I've been taking care of her (I've been going to her house each morning and evening to cook for her, clean the house and change her bandages.) I've...
