  1. What does the average Celiac look like? Like this on good days. Like this when we realize we just got CC'ed. Like this when people make stupid comments. We look like this when we think about the delicious gluten free food we CAN have. We look like this when people enjoy eating something we made and are shocked to find that it is gluten free. We...
  2. I think ALL of us who post on the internet, no matter where we post, need to be a bit more careful. I was just on one of my guitar forums a few minutes ago and they were talking about a very rare guitar. Some guy actually posted a list of all the people he knew who had one. Now all of these people have to get burgler alarms because it is so easy to find people...
  3. This is actually embarassing. I have been gluten free for six months now. I have been on this forum all that time. I have read the warnings many many times about our pots and pans. But I have an old pot that my Mom got as a shower gift back in 1950. When Mom got new pans many years ago, I asked if I could have that one. Sentimental reasons, you know...
  4. Wow. Do you really think it's possible I could go back to eating corn again someday? I have my doubts because it seems that I'm more sensitive to corn than any of my other "poisons". I even got sick from one of the new corn based plastic bottles. I'm at the point where I was laughing at myself last night - While reading the paper I noticed an ad that had...
  5. OOH! OOH! Could you list the ingredients? My local healthfood store carries their potato chips. Maybe if there's no corn in these I could eat them. If so, I'll see if they can them in.
  6. Back before the corn intolerance hit, I used to LOVE Canyon Bakehouse bread too. But I think the problem with Udi's is that you may have tried their WHITE bread. They make one that is a whole grain bread that LOOKS like white bread and has the taste and texture of French bread. I must admit a bit of jealousy and frustration with all of these bread complaint...
  7. You could just say that it causes severe digestive problems that eventually lead to vitamin deficiencies, neurological problems, thyroid diseases, and cancer, if not addressed.
  8. Hi! I USED to live in New London county. But that was before I had celiac. My Mom had it though, and she used to love eating at Cozy Corner in Wauregan (between Plainfield and Brooklyn, in Windham county). They didn't have a gluten free menu, but the owner had an aunt with celiac, and knew the ropes. Mom ate there at least once a week for years and never...
  9. Well, I get my celiac genes from Mom's side, and I get my (former) ability to drink anyone under the table without ever getting a hangover from the Native American genes on my Dad's side. But depression? That could stem from being sick all the time, the struggles to live a normal life without being CC'ed every time you turn around, or lot's of other things...
  10. When I was a little kid, I loved chocolate. When puberty hit, I HATED chocolate. Yes, too sweet and a nasty aftertaste. When menopause hit, I started craving chocolate, and I ate WAY too much. Now I'm back to not liking it. I can still enjoy chocolate ice cream, but candy bars just don't appeal at all. What is happenning now is a bit strange. I am hungry...
  11. I never had Bill's help, but I did have a very bad problem at one time. As a matter of fact, I thought my celiac digestive symptoms (mild ones) were just damage I had done with my old pal Jose. I managed to get away from the people I used to visit Jose with, and eventually got things under control. It had gotten to the point where I could visit him on rare...
  12. This may sound crazy, and I can't remember if I heard this here or one of the other food intolerance forums I frequent, but if you cook an egg in the shell, it retains the sulfites, but if exposed to air, it doesn't. I wasn't really having a problem with eggs, but they stopped tasting good to me, to the point where they ALMOST made me a little nauseous. I...
  13. Well, the chicken didn't thaw in time so I fried a couple of eggs, mixed them in (with runny yolks) to some rice with some cauliflower and a tiny bit of leftover shredded steak. I'm still hungry.
  14. I'm happy because God has blessed me richly. I grew up in the best family a person could hope for, with wonderful, loving, supportive parents. I am living in the place I love best. I am doing what I love for a living. I am surrounded by true friends. The Christmas decorations look festive, the music is fun to play, and the coffee tastes good. AND, the...
  15. I decided to finally get an artificial tree a few years ago. It is the kind you have to put the branches in, you know, one of those color coded things. But in order to make it look more like a real tree, I will mix the branches from adjoining layers. I even leave some out completely. That way there is room to put some ornaments on the inside. A lot of people...
  16. Hundreds. I was a very sickly kid with bronchitis at least twice a year up until I was in my 30's. I have had pneumonia several times, plus the assorted ear infections, sinus infections, abcessed teeth, and let's not forget the month and a half they had me on antibiotics for this mysterious pain in my jawbone.
  17. Thanks, Skylark. I just now got a call from the real estate agent. Her client is very interested and is coming by tomorrow to look again. I'll probably know soon if my shop has a future here.
  18. Black pepper is full of salicylates, which some people are sensitive to. But then again, so are most veggies and fruits, so if you can eat them without being bothered, that is probably not it. I think it is more likely that you have an actual allergy to black pepper. Here is a small excerpt about it from Livestrong.com: Other Symptoms An allergic...
  19. I am so ashamed. I didn't make it. I was all set, feeling strong, and then I got some devestating news - the building I have my music store in is up for sale and a guy from California is looking at it. His first order of business is to raise my rent to California prices. I have to find a new place to move my store to, or just go out of business and get a...
  20. I don't know about anyone else, but I am so sensitive to corn that even one of those new plastic bottles that is made with a corn based plastic got me. And corn is even harder to avoid than gluten, for two reasons. First, it is cheap, so companies seem to add it to everything. And second, corn does not have to be listed in the ingredients the way wheat does...
  21. I can identify with this. I don't get nausea from my "poisons", but I did learn to overcome my fear of, upchucking. I hadn't done it in years when one night someone poured too much ginger brandy into my glass. I was tipsy enough to drink the darned thing and then I had such nausea and dizzyness I knew I'd be hungover and sick for a couple of days if I didn...
  22. Julie, yes, it's wonderful for him that he has someone in his life who is so caring and willing to go the extra mile to make sure he doesn't get sick. You are a good person! I'm thinking that maybe the reason he didn't send the salad back is that he didn't want to look picky or sick in front of you. The lipstick could be a problem, but if you BOTH eat...
  23. I know what you mean. One time when I came home from eating Chinese, my cat was looking at me funny. I never ate there again!
  24. The eyeball in the soup reminded me of something else. There is a GREAT Chinese restaurant/buffet in Cheyenne Wyoming that has ducks feet soup. And yes, there are whole ducks feet, toenails and all, floating in the soup. Um, I didn't try it.
  25. I don't know if it has anything to do with food intolerances, but I can't stand too much heat. I THINK it all started with the hot flashes I used to get though. I have kept my thermostat set at 60 for years now because any warmer than that made me sweat. But it's funny, now that I'm off gluten (and corn, etc.) I seem to get chilly at 60. I find myself...
