ARCHIVED Grossest Food To Eat?
bartfull replied to kareng's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I ate dog once. It didn't LOOK gross, but the very idea of eating a puppydog is gross. But I was in Mexico at the time, I was hungry, and that's all there was to eat. It didn't taste bad but it had a very springy texture - kind of like eating a sponge. -
Don't these doctors have computers or books to look things up on?!! I own a music store, and if a customer comes in and mentions a brand that I'm not familiar with, I look it up. But these stupid doctors are dealing with our HEALTH. You'd think they'd care enough to at least do a little research when someone asks about a condition they are not familiar with...

ARCHIVED Anyone gluten-free, Salicylate-Free And Nickel-Free?
bartfull replied to Deacon's Garden's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh yeah, about those stainless steel pans - they say you should never cook acidic foods like tomato sauce in them because that WILL leach the nickel out of the pan and into your food. Aluminum or glass is best. -
ARCHIVED Anyone gluten-free, Salicylate-Free And Nickel-Free?

I've got the same intolerances/sensitivities you do, PLUS I think I am super-sensitive to corn. I am living on meat, cheese, and cauliflower. I can also eat Starbucks ice cream, which is what keeps me sane. The biggest problem I have found is this: Most foods that are low in sals are high in nickel. That's why cauliflower is the only veggie I can eat... -
ARCHIVED How/why Did You Choose Your Member Name?
bartfull replied to love2travel's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What a beautiful story! Isn't it great when you find your true home? I think a lot of people never do find it. I think a lot of people never even realize that where they live isn't "home". That's the way I was until the first time I came to the Black Hills. I knew INSTANTLY that this is where I belong. It took 18 years before I was able to actually move here... -
Thanks everyone! I don't have any kids or nieces or nephews, but I have a BUNCH of guitar students who look up to me, so I will be setting a good example for them. And I figured out that the money I save will cover my telephone, lights, and water at the house. There will even be a little left over. I've been spending about $35 a week! LAST time I quit...

There are a lot of reasons to quit smoking and I have decided to give it a go. Here is my rationale: I can't afford it anymore. I'm losing weight on the new diet, so now is a good time - maybe I won't Gain like most folks do when they quit. When I can keep from getting CC'd, I feel really good, and I know if I quit smoking I'll feel even better...

Hey! That's great news - they sell it here! I don't have to order online or drive 60 miles to get it. And the price is right too! Thanks! -
Cait, I'm sure there are SOME out there. Check online or at your healthfood store. I found some pro-biotics that don't have anything bad in them, but that's all so far. I'm thinking about getting some made at a compounding pharmacy. I know they'll be expensive, but not as expensive as getting really sick from vitamin deficiencies. I have to get some kind...

ARCHIVED Share Your Culture
bartfull replied to navigator's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Differences between places in the US? Well, I have lived in Connecticut on the East Coast, San Diego on the West Coast, and now I'm in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in the middle of the country. When I moved from Connecticut to San Diego it was culture shock. The East Coast at that time was more conservative. (This was in the early 70's.) San Diego... -
ARCHIVED Sluggish Gallbladder/liver: Herbs And Salicylate/gluten Sensitivity
bartfull replied to YoloGx's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I react very badly to aspirin too, and I have been hanging out at salcylatesensitivity.com lately. The other day when I mentioned I ate one thickly peeled pear and had a reaction, I was told that we all have a certain level of sals that we can tolerate, and when we stay away from sals, we can eat SOME, and for a WHILE, until they build back up to the level... -
I WISH corn had to be labeled, but I don't think it is. I just got nailed from "natural cherry flavor" in a vitamin B-12 tablet. They told me on the corn allergy forum that usually ANY "natural flavor" is delivered on corn. I'm not sure how that works, but I do know that the B-12 got me, and that was the only suspect ingredient.

I don't have any family left, but I LOVE my family's history. Too bad there's no one to pass the info down to. On my Mom's side I am German (Prussian) and English. My Mom's maternal great grandmother was supposedly a dutchess who was disowned when she fell in love with the stableboy. BUT, I found out that was just the story the family told to hide... -

ARCHIVED What Are You Cooking For Thanksgiving?
bartfull replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I don't have any family. Period. So for the past few years I have gone with a large group of friends to the American Legion. They put on a huge Thanksgiving dinner. Everything is homemade. Tender juicy turkey, three different types of stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, two different sweet potato dishes, several different veggies, cranberry jelly, cranberry... -

MeToo, me too! I have palmoplantar pustular psoriasis. Here is a link to an article with pictures: Open Original Shared Link Now, I have just learned there is a possibility that the nickel in my food is bothering me, and in my research I discovered that there is another rash that shows up on the hands and feet called dyshidrosis. It looks...

ARCHIVED 15Yo Spontaneously Allergic To Everything?
bartfull replied to Chalula88's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Question: Is she one of those folks who get a rash from inexpensive jewelry or watches? I ask because I am learning about nickel sensitivity, and yes, there IS nickel in food. As a matter of fact, all the foods you listed that give her trouble are high in nickel. I hope for her sake that is NOT the problem because her diet will be VERY limited. I started... -
One of the things that bothers me about all forums is when young people use texting jargon. You know, things like "R U going 2 B home?" Instead of "Are you going to be home?" It takes a fraction of a second longer to type out the real words, and it is SO much easier to read!

ARCHIVED Celiac Roommate
bartfull replied to john2712s's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wonder if he's the type of person who, when he finally DOES get sick, will blame it on you. You are keeping your promise to have a safe kitchen, but if he gets sick, he probably won't blame his new sweetheart. And although we all know he should blame HIMSELF, it's human nature to find someone else to blame. I would talk to him about it. Just lay your... -
ARCHIVED Does Popcorn Bother Anyone Else?
bartfull replied to Omma's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I can't eat corn at all, but I have discovered that if you break up a couple of rice cakes into popcorn sized pieces, melt some butter, warm the ricecake in the microwave for just a FEW seconds, then pour the butter over it, it tastes so much like popcorn you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. -
OK, I forgot to give my background and coloring. I have grey hair that used to be brown, blue/grey eyes, and I am German, English, Polish, and Lakota Sioux. (What a combination!)
