ARCHIVED Minor Upgrades Will Be Made Tonight
bartfull replied to Scott Adams's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
Don't know if it has anything to do with the upgrade but I've noticed today that I have to type slowly or it misses letters. Hasn't happened on any other sites but if I type fast it comes out like - "d't tye oo ft" instead of "don't type too fast". -
ARCHIVED Canyon Bakehouse Mountain White
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know Canyon is a good company. That's why I was so disapointed. I thought if the 7-grain was so good the white would be great too. Maybe it's just me. Like I said, it was frozen and just in to the store so I doubt it had gone bad. Could be I just a strong aversion to the taste of tapioca in bread, but honestly, I can't even stand the smell. The texture... -
ARCHIVED Canyon Bakehouse Mountain White
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wrote to them this morning. The bread was frozen and they didn't have any last week so unless it came from Colorado already bad it was relatively fresh. I took the two unopened loaves back this morning and exchanged them for the 7-grain. The opened is going to feed the birds (if even they will eat it.) -
ARCHIVED Canyon Bakehouse Mountain White
bartfull posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thought I'd write to warn everybody. The healthfood store had some yesterday so I thought I'd try it. It is NASTY!! It has that same bitter smell and taste that the Ener-G bread has. I can't get the aftertaste out of my mouth no matter how many times I brush my teeth. Maybe it's the tapioca that makes it taste so bad. Their 7-grain is my avorite bread but... -

ARCHIVED My Lunch For My First Day Of Work
bartfull replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
What you have to do with fresh broccoli is soak it in salt water for about a half hour. The worm will come out. Then rinse the broccoli and cook it. My Grandma always had a farm and/or garden and she told me every bunch has a worm in it. (I guess the stuff from the grocery store has usually been "de-wormed" already.) -
ARCHIVED The Cost Of Bread
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
"Target in my area sells Udi's for $4.49 a loaf." Welcome to the forum Monamae! Other than the health food store, the only store in my area that sells gluten-free foods is Lynn's Dakotamart. Stores like Safeway and Walmart and Target are a 120+ mile round trip for me. But anyway, now that you're here, why don't you start a new thread and introduce... -
ARCHIVED The Cost Of Bread
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, Cyclinglady, but no thanks. I have given up the ice cream. Sugar causes inflammation and my left wrist has been really sore for the past several weeks. It's getting better though because I haven't been eating sugar. And you know, it feels good to be off sugar. Except when I was a very little kid I didn't ever like sweet stuff. Sure I would have... -
ARCHIVED The Cost Of Bread
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I guess the problem is my location. EVERYTHING is expensive here. A very small box of all-purpose gluten-free flour here is over ten bucks. It would only make one loaf. Bread mixes are the same. I'll just enjoy the two loaves I bought and then go back to mixing things with rice. I have done that for my bacon egg and cheese "sandwiches" in the past. I... -
ARCHIVED The Cost Of Bread
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There's no Costco in the Black Hills. There is a Walmart in Rapid City and their website says they have gluten-free. But I only venture up there about once a year. I might ask a friend who goes there more often if he can pick some up next time he goes. I could order online I suppose but the only freezer I have is the little one on my refrigerator... -
ARCHIVED The Cost Of Bread
bartfull posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I bought some Udi's last night. The price has gone up to $7.41 a loaf. Canyon Bakehouse and Schar (the only other edible brands here) are even more. I know I can get baking mixes but they are priced about the same and on top of that I would have to make them so there's no point. I could buy flours seperately and make my own mix but again, the cost... -
ARCHIVED Has Celiac/ncgi Changed Your Relationship With Food?
bartfull replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I felt EXACTLY that way before. I notice that most weighing in here about thinking of eating as nothing more than a necessary bodily function are intolerant to lots of other things besides gluten. I was too. But now that I've healed and been able to get most of these foods back I'm having a ball with food. Just yesterday I was looking at the grocery store... -

COD!! The healthfood store had wild caught Alaskan cod for a good price. I'll be broiling it with butter and bread crumbs. I'll probably have a baked potato and some broccoli with it. And I WILL be sharing with the cat. (She loves cod almost as much as I do.) -
ARCHIVED New To Gluten Free, Not Sure What I Am Allowed To Eat

That is gluten withdrawal. Give it another week or so and you'll feel better. -
ARCHIVED Thermos Recommendations
bartfull replied to BlessedMommy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Avoid Aladdin brand. Every one I have ever had (two that I bought and a couple that were gifts) has leaked. I would stick with Thermos brand or as others have mentioned, Coleman. -

Also, it is easier on both you and your gut if you stick to whole foods at first. Things like meat and potatoes and fresh veggies and fruit. You don't have to worry about reading the ingredients labels because there aren't any, and these things are easier to digest than processed food. And be prepared for gluten withdrawal. You may get headaches and mood... -
ARCHIVED Sharing A Home With Gluten-Eating Puppy
bartfull replied to dani nero's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nobody is disagreeing that gluten-free is better for dogs. But Dani said she WAS feeding her puppy gluten-free dog food and it is only when the puppy got sick that the vet prescribed this special food. She hasn't been back to tell us what condition the puppy has, but obviously the gluten-free food she had been giving it didn't prevent this current illness... -
ARCHIVED Cooking/baking For Someone With Celiac?
bartfull replied to Oria's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yeah, some of us prefer not to eat something a well intentioned person makes for them. I STILL won't eat anything I didn't cook myself except for one restaurant where the owner has a celiac relative. (The gluten-free food is made in a totally separate room so there is no chance of contamination.) The best thing would be to make up a basket. You could... -

ARCHIVED Turkey Breast For Thanksgiving
bartfull replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
A Pyrex dish will be fine. And you can thicken the gravy with potato starch. I have found that turkey is best just roasted plain. You don't even really have to baste it. Every time you open the oven door to baste you lose heat. Just rinse the turkey breast, pop it into the dish, then roast it. When it's done, take it out, put the meat on a platter, put... -

Thanks! I learned patience and self-control while I was so restricted so in the long run it was good for me. And now I just want to celebrate. It'll happen for you too. And when it does you'd better watch your figure! I thought giving up ice cream would make me lose weight but with all the ymmy things I've gotten back I fear I'm eating more now than... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
bartfull replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I usually eat a small breakfast, a big lunch and then a small supper. I cooked that turkey and will be having that for lunch today. And yesterday, one day only, the store had russet potatoes on sale - a five pound bag for FORTY-EIGHT CENTS, limit 2 per customer, so I'll be having a baked potato with my turkey. But for breakfast (and supper later) I have... -
ARCHIVED It Gets Better Every Day
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
How long do you think you had celiac before you were diagnosed? For me I think it was probably 12 years. I don't know if three and a half years is the average time to heal for someone who had celiac for 12 years, but you might calculate from that. -
With your sinuses all blocked up you might weigh more. (Sorry. I shouldn't make fun of your pain.) Seriously, I do hope you're feeling better soon. Thanksgiving is coming up and it would be such a shame not to enjoy it. (((HUGS)))
