ARCHIVED Craving Fish - Need Advice/help
bartfull replied to Waitingindreams's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Cod. Put it in a baking dish. Add butter, perhaps a little lemon, and if desired (and on your diet), top with gluten-free bread crumbs. It's done when it's white and flaky. PS, if you can find any Against the Grain products, they make great bread-like substances. -
ARCHIVED Is Great Value Canned Chunk Chicken Breast gluten-free?
bartfull replied to CeliacCourtney's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If it contained wheat the label would have to say so. It's the law. That being said, there is no law about labeling for barley. I would think it would be on the label anyway though. The only way to know for sure is to call the company and/or check their website. (It's been my experience that emailing is better. They could always deny a person on the phone... -
ARCHIVED Too Early For This Cold Weather
bartfull replied to Serielda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
It's warmed up a little bit here. Today we're supposed to have a high of 14F above. But between the snow we had a few days ago and what dumped on us overnight there are about ten inches on the ground right now. I just came in from shoveling and my feet are soaked and cold. -
ARCHIVED Go Picnics At Target
bartfull replied to africanqueen99's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You can get beef jerky for around a dollar an ounce. A 2 pound can of Planter's peanuts is ten bucks. And you can make your own crackers really cheaply. All that's left is some sort of fruit or veggie. You could either get a dehydrater and make your own, or buy some dried fruit at the store. And eggs, if pickled, need no refrigeration. You could make up individual... -
ARCHIVED Go Picnics At Target
bartfull replied to africanqueen99's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have to be honest. Even with the coupon, they sure seem overpriced for what you're getting. Most of them contain less than 3 ounces of food. I'd rather make up my own "to go" lunches. Some nuts, a hard-boiled egg, a piece of fruit, a few crackers. It would taste better and be cheaper. -
ARCHIVED Too Early For This Cold Weather
bartfull replied to Serielda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Well, it was something like 10 below here last night. My favorite cold weather activity is sitting near the heater with a hot cup of coffee in one hand,a good book in the other, and the cat in my lap. This STINKS!!! -
ARCHIVED Out With The Gluten, In With My Health? (I Hope.)
bartfull replied to Jill-L's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you tried Pamela's? They're not bad at all. I like to put them on a paper plate and pop them into the microwave along with a damp paper towel. Makes 'em softer.- 21 replies

ARCHIVED Out With The Gluten, In With My Health? (I Hope.)
bartfull replied to Jill-L's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Jill, if the tests come back positive you will HAVE to go gluten-free unless you want your health to deteriorate further. The first couple of weeks will be rough because you will probably go through gluten withdrawal. You will get headaches and mood swings and an overall shaky feeling. After that you will start feeling better. You may not see improvement...- 21 replies

ARCHIVED Does Your School Provide A gluten-free Lunch For Your Kids?
bartfull replied to Nebraskamommy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't think your school is following the guidelines if they took away salad and replaced it with a hot dog. The new menu is supposed to be heavy on fruits and vegetables and low on salt. Hot dogs are notorious for being high sodium. Open Original Shared Link -

Just be careful handling. Use a clean cutting board, cook thoroughly, and refrigerate promptly. After all, we wouldn't want any of THESE growing on your turkey: Open Original Shared Link -

ARCHIVED For All My Corn Intolerant Friends
bartfull replied to bartfull's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
It is NOT a sandich meat product. It is a frozen turkey breast and if it had soy it would have to say so by law. Soy is one of the top eight allergens and it MUST labeled. Check out the ingredients at the bottom of the box on the right: Open Original Shared Link -
I know fresh turkeys aren't injected, but I was just on the Butterball website and discovered that their frozen turkey breasts have nothing but turkey in them. Not injected with anything, so if you like the convenience of frozen turkey, that's the way to go. Even if you're cooking for a crowd this year you could get one of these for yourself. I'm going...

ARCHIVED Gluten Threshold

If you come up with a gluten-free pancake made with potato flour, let me know. I'd be proud and happy to be the first to test it!! -
ARCHIVED Gluten Threshold
bartfull replied to Alfred's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Now SMRI just had a good idea! If you could make a line made from potato flour there would be not problem with contamination, and as we all know, Maine grows (sorry Idaho) the best potatoes in the world. Locally grown AND gluten-free. What could be better? -
ARCHIVED Gluten Threshold
bartfull replied to Alfred's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"Low in gluten" = poison to anyone with celiac. Most if not all of us must eat certified gluten-free oats, and even then, some of us get sick. If they guy you get the oats from uses the same equipment on wheat, one batch MAY pass, but another one may not. It sounds like you have a good product, but perhaps you should market your product as organic and... -

I just realized I said wine vinegar. I said that because I was thinking about the recipe I got which called for red wine, but since wine really hurts my stomach, I used RICE vinegar. Now that my diet has expanded and I actually get one day off a week, I might be showing up here more often. I guess with a little guidance even the helpless can learn to... -

I hardly ever show up here but I had to tell you folks, the sauerbraten came out great! I cut the elk roast into chunks, about 3X3 inches. Seared it in a little sesame oil. Then I put it in my crock pot with a pint of vegetable broth, about a half cup of wine vinegar, a stick of butter, and two of the small packages of Pamela's ginger snaps. I put the cooker... -
ARCHIVED Spices
bartfull replied to rrmac's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
McCormick spices are fine. Seasonings are different. They are a mix of spices and can sometimes contain wheat. As always, read the label. Have you read the Newbie 101 thread in the coping section? It'll give you loads of great information and help you get started. Welcome to the forum. Ask as many questions as come to mind and we'll all help as much...
