  1. lol, my hubby and I use BubbleGirl too. When I'm making dinner, I hold at least one thoroughly washed hand up as if I were a surgeon avoiding contamination of my patient.
  2. You should put that in a song and play it on your guitar!
  3. Oh yeah, I get that too. Whenever I get glutened, at some point I will also be menstruating since my symptoms tend to last 5 weeks. I have certain clothes that just will not fasten during those weeks.
  4. Too funny! I haven't seen Cloverfield yet, but isn't it funny how gluten is like a horror movie? I literally have nightmares about eating gluten.
  5. Hahaha!
  6. Thanks Yeah, I see it as poison too. So sorry you have the response to gluten that you do! My hubby is from Kansas, and whenever we go there to visit family, we drive past all the wheat fields and all I see are fields of poison.
  7. Actually I went gluten free after my blood was drawn. The results came back a month later as negative for celiac. My doctor had already done an endoscopy for my "mystery pain" and never bothered to do a celiac biopsy. When I finally connected the dots to celiac he ordered the blood test. If I hadn't brought it up at all, he would have diagnosed me with Irritable...
  8. I've been suffering from gluten exposure recently and because I don't "look sick," I started coming up with ways to describe how I feel. I have several symptoms, but the best thing I've found to get my point across about the pain is to say that it feels like I swallowed a porcupine. I stepped it up by doing something fun. On my author blog, I dressed...
  9. My grandma is diagnosed with celiac disease. She "cheats" all the time. She was diagnosed in the early 90's and I don't think that she was ever taught how important it was to read labels and avoid cross-contamination. By the time I figured out my symptoms and got educated, her mind was too far gone to explain it to her. I was diagnosed as gluten-intolerant...
  10. good words! I get too stressed myself over food. Holidays are the worst. I think I need to read your post here during those times.
  11. There are liners that are designed for the crockpot. They are meant to reduce clean up, but if you feel you might get glutened from your crockpot, you can try the liners and see if it helps. I don't have a crockpot, only just saw and ad for them once. I had to replace my non-stick pans and plastic utensils because I was still getting sick. Stainless...
  12. I make sure I have plenty of gluten free bars with me. Also, having a variety of bars helps because eating the same bars all the time gets old very quickly. Kind bars, Oskiri (sp?), Enjoy Life, and several others. If I'm going to be out for long enough to miss a meal at home and I'm not sure about the restaurants, I'll bring a can of soup with me. There are...
  13. Still, with any place, you have to be careful. I'm currently suffering from cross-contamination from Five Guys. I knew she ruined the fries for me. But I was starving, it was crazy busy in that food court even at 2 pm, and my boys were running everywhere. When the girl argued about the best way to bag the fries for a gluten free customer, I gave up too quickly...
  14. I've had family who had nothing to cut up fruits and veggies on except a wooden board. I've had them cover it in wax paper first, or just use a clean plate to cut on. I'm quite sensitive, so any extra precautions are worth it. It's the whole reason I don't eat at Subway, though they have "just salad."
  15. Vent away! We all get down about our situations because of misconceptions believed by the majority of society. Hang in there and know that we are all ears (or in this case, eyes) if you need us. I have friends who are accountants and I definitely don't envy them around tax season! I'm just thankful for their sakes that it only comes around once a year...
  16. Welcome! I definitely noticed a link between gluten and my periods, but I didn't have the hot flashes. I hope that gets resolved for you! Like some others here, my periods got worse; they were much more painful, heavier bleeds for longer times. I remember one period that lasted almost 2 weeks. I ended up taking birth control to fix it and it does help. ...
  17. Yes, I agree completely. I also feel the need to point out, Waitingindreams, that if your mother is indeed bipolar, then she can't help her behavior. That's something that I've had to learn and understand about my dad. It's very difficult, but you kind of have to just accept what a bipolar says, but then do what you feel is right.
  18. I'm one of these unfortunates that had this kind of moron doctor. By the time I figured out that it could be celiac, we'd already done an endoscopy. Furthermore, I had to be the one to bring up celiac at all! So much for being a "specialist." Grr. Anyway, some people also do a paleo diet for a while then slowly reintroduce allergens to see if they have...
  19. It really stinks that your mom is so unsupportive, especially when you have an actual diagnosis (which is no easy feat). Is there a particular reason why, do you think? My dad doesn't trust doctors. He still thinks smoking is harmless. But he can be quite selfish. If he can't feel the harm, and he enjoys it, then "there is no harm." Maybe your mom gets frustrated...
  20. Does your sister still live at home too? It sounds as though she is sympathetic. Mine is and she is totally wonderful about me being gluten free. It does help to have someone in your corner, so to speak. But I wouldn't talk about it in common places where your mother is. If she is bipolar (and from my perspective, she totally sounds like it), there is no...
  21. ((Hugs!)) Your mom sounds like my dad. She wouldn't be bipolar, would she? Fortunately, I had already moved out and been married by the time I discovered I needed to be gluten free, so he didn't really have a say in it. He was very skeptical about it at first, but has come around. Though I wouldn't put it past him to try to sneak gluten into my food...
  22. I ran into this problem a lot with family and friends when I first went gluten free nearly 3 years ago. What makes it most difficult is that, like me, you don't have an official diagnosis of Celiac. I had a lousy doctor, so I diagnosed myself based on research and listening to my own body. It sound like you're doing the same. Friends and family have...
  23. Thank you for all your advice Mitzi, but I think I was misleading about my once a month problem and I totally blame my current "gluten brain" that I'm suffering from at this time. It's not my bowels "dumping", it's my uterus. I'm actually one of those that have constipation instead of diarrea, though I do get that too from time to time. I saw that vinegar...
  24. Thank you for the suggestion! Depending on how my appointment goes tomorrow with my GI dr, I may call my nurseline as well. Let me know if you find a good dr, because I live near SW Florida, the Tampa Bay area. I haven't seen my GI dr in a year, and never had much confidence in his knowledge of celiac because after he ran me through a battery of tests...
