ARCHIVED My First Trip To The Mil's Since Diagnosis
Harpgirl replied to SnoBaby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow! I feel so lucky to have a down-to-earth MIL! My hubby and I agreed, if (God forbid) anything should ever happen to him, I would take the boys and live closer to his parents. Though mine love the boys, they aren't as "children oriented" as my in-laws (who now have 20 grandkids). -
This one has nothing to do with celiac, but my one year old just stood up too fast under the table and bumped his head HARD! High squeal in my ear poor baby bumped his noggin my eardrum is dull

Haikus don't have to rhyme, but that was cute! This rhyme's getting worse getting glutened is my bane. It will clear up soon.

ARCHIVED Nightshade Free?
Harpgirl replied to tea-and-crumpets's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm not nightshade free (yet ), and I've only been gluten-free for almost 2 weeks. But I'm actually finding it easy to change my eating habits (I wouldn't even call it limiting my diet) without too much stress, probably because I was already focused on my diet to begin with. I had been counting calories since Feb and was successfully losing weight (something... -
ARCHIVED Feel Like I Am Finally Starting To Get Somewhere
Harpgirl replied to alex11602's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yay! Good job! If I knew how to insert other emoticons, I would put a cute dancing banana right about....HERE! Honestly, I'm very happy for you. I love hearing the success stories. -
I saw a similar thread on a literature site I use to frequent, but they took the last line of the previous poem to make as their first. That might be fun I'll try. I'll settle for rice But not the Krispies with malt because they "pop" wrong.

ARCHIVED Red Robin Treated Me Like A Princess.
Harpgirl replied to Elfbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Would they be okay if the bun is lettuce? That's how I ate mine. It was really good and gave it a satisfying crunch. The only thing was the burger was more likely to slide around a lot. I had to eat the last 2 bites with my fork. Maybe RR might be okay if you brought gluten-free buns (do they make those?) and sent them to the kitchen for them... -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Using Paper Towels?
Harpgirl replied to Harpgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I'm making more of their foods and snacks gluten free. The Cheerios were just handy at the time. I'm finding that what's "handy" at the moment, anymore kills me in the long run. I found out that except for the puffs, most of the Gerber snacks they like are already gluten-free. Though too much of that gets expensive too. Fortunately, our little... -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Using Paper Towels?
Harpgirl replied to Harpgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everyone Fortunately, Sam's Club has a good generic brand that I like. One of these days, I'll switch to BJ so I can use coupons (and get some gluten-free goodies). And yes, my husband is ever so slowly coming around the farther I get into this. Perhaps, in time, I'll be able to get the whole family to go gluten-free at home. I'm really hoping... -
ARCHIVED Need Someone Who Knows What They're Talking About
Harpgirl replied to jennennyc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Tupperware! Maybe that's how I got glutened. I just polished off the other half of a watermelon that's been sitting in tupperware that we on occation would use to store spaghetti. Grrr. I've been glossing over the kitchen. I guess I need to get a bit more detailed. -
I second (or third?) the Dummies book! I'm reading it right now and it's really helping me to understand how to deal with this (when I'm not at my computer), and not panic about it. I'm looking forward to reading the others too. I also understand that Dangerous Grains is suppose to be good too.

ARCHIVED My First Trip To The Mil's Since Diagnosis
Harpgirl replied to SnoBaby's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
First of all, let me say THANK YOU! You've brought up some points that I hadn't thought of and I'm going to visit my in-laws next month (without my husband). Fortunately, my MIL is a nurse, so she may be a bit more understanding, but I don't think she's all that familiar with celiac so after reading this I realize I still need to prepare her and my FIL... -
And I was feeling so great this morning! I was wondering if, when I wash my hands in the kitchen, should I be using paper towels to dry them, or (if I can get away with it from my always-in-a-hurry husband ) would a designated hand towel be okay? I guess I would have to hang it up higher too. My cramping is back as bad as ever Though I could...

ARCHIVED Need Someone Who Knows What They're Talking About
Harpgirl replied to jennennyc's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I second what most have said here, but just wanted to add (because I love yogurt ) Glutenfreemanna suggested yogurt as a snack, but becareful of Activia. It says on the label, "Manufactured in a plant processing wheat." Yoplait is good, it even says "gluten-free" on the label. -
ARCHIVED I Think I Might Have Celiac Disease O.o
Harpgirl replied to tranquilskies's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It wouldn't hurt to get tested. There is a blood test and an endoscopy, where they check for blunted villi like the PP described. I too have the fatigue and weakness (though I haven't yet been diagnosed) but I've also read about the easy bruising and tingling being symptoms. If you're going to be tested, however, you must continue eating gluten until... -
ARCHIVED Does Anybody Stuggle To Talk When Glutened?
Harpgirl replied to speedy2056's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm going to have to try that! I was wondering, how long does it take for your talking issues to "normalize?" I haven't found much relief yet, though I have been glutened several times (the last time being Sunday). -
These are excellent descriptions and a big help to me as many of them describe my trouble too. Keep 'em comin' and I'll have my hubby read this thread tonight. I may even send the link to my sis who laughs and says "that's just you!" Thanks soooo much!

Hi, I'm new here too (well relatively speaking ) I won't get my blood test back until 7/7. I went gluten free as soon as my blood was drawn. I found that the best way to cope with it is to educate yourself. This site is a great place to start. Ask questions, get opinions, etc. I'm also reading Living Gluten-Free for Dummies by Danna Korn. It's plain...

ARCHIVED Another Bad Day For Me
Harpgirl replied to Mummyto3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh! I forgot, thought you already did. Once my blood was in that vial (2 weeks Friday), I haven't consciously eaten anything with gluten. I certainly noticed the difference by day 2! Go for it! You will feel better! -
ARCHIVED Another Bad Day For Me
Harpgirl replied to Mummyto3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hang in there babe! Get yourself a gluten-free smoothie, or a coffee treat (if you can drink it) and know that you are doing something to help make it go away soon. On days like that (2 days ago ), I will treat myself as a reminder that all will get better! I'm going to really enjoy my yoga class this morning. It's a treat and I don't even feel bad... -
Whenever I talk about brain fog and celiac, my husband takes on this skeptical aire and scoffs a bit (well, a lot really). Tonight, he explained that everytime I mention it, he remembers the movie Joe Vs the Volcano and in particular the scene where Meg Ryan says, "You didn't get a second opinion for something called a "brain cloud?"" He still doesn't quite...

ARCHIVED Does Anybody Stuggle To Talk When Glutened?
Harpgirl replied to speedy2056's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I actually was just recently tested for it because we thought that I may have ADD. I'm constantly forgetting things all the time and it drives my hubby nuts! (me too to be honest ) Turns out it's just a mild case of anxiety/depression coupled with OCD tendencies. I'm working on relieving this through relaxation and seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist... -

ARCHIVED Red Robin Treated Me Like A Princess.
Harpgirl replied to Elfbaby's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I just wanted to say that we went to Red Robin for dinner tonight and I had the same great experience. I also learned that they update the gluten free menu all the time to make sure that they had accurate information from suppliers who may have changed their formulas to add gluten. The menu even had in large bold print at the top, "Expires July 1, 2011... -
Oh dear! I didn't think about that! Sorry.
