ARCHIVED Nutritional Deficiencies
gf4life replied to tammy's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Once your intestines heal, and you are testing normal levels of calcium, iron, B-vitamins, etc. then it would be up to you if you want to continue using supplements. I think is a good idea for my family, since our gluten/dairy free diet is a bit lacking in some areas of vitamins and minerals. We are just too limited in certain things. So I make sure we... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Negative, Now What?
gf4life replied to Greengal's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, they do test people in Canada. It probably costs a bit more though... God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Vance's Dairifree Anyone?
gf4life replied to Beantree's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Was the almond milk vanilla flavored? Because that stuff is nasty. The Blue Diamond Almond chocolate flavored is great though. It should be chilled first, but tastes really good. Vance's Darifree is good, too. My kid's didn't care for it, but at the time they were still on regular cow's milk. Now that they are dairy free it might be better. Did... -
ARCHIVED Just Dropped In To Say Hi;
gf4life replied to cybergran10's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Judy, Welcome to the board! I am a 32 year old mother of three (ages 5, 8 & 9) and all four of us are gluten intolerant. I was diagnosed last November, my children last March. I am also an overweight Celiac and was refused testing for almost two years because of it. I have lost 8 lbs since starting the gluten-free diet. I am also dairy free... -
ARCHIVED Cheap Travel Foods? Any Thoughts?
gf4life replied to hapi2bgf's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hapi2bgf, You can't have tree nuts, but can you have sunflower seeds? I found a really good alternative to peanut butter, it is sunflowerseed butter. It is a bit runnier than peanut butter, but very tasty. I got mine at Trader Joe's, but you might find it at other health food stores. If you have a cooler that stays consistantly cold (or you keep... -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Most Common Symptoms?
gf4life replied to Chantalle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
HI Amie, Welcome to the board! Yes, it could mess up future test results if you start the gluten free diet now. You might want to wait until your blood test results come in and see if your doctor wants to run anymore tests. God bless, Mariann -
ARCHIVED Can You Tell What Had Gluten By Time Frame?
gf4life replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If it was block cheese it should have been fine. But if all you ate for almost two days was cheese and coffee, that alone could give you some pretty strange symptoms! And then the restaurant might have got you contaminated, but it is hard to say. It is really hard to track down what might have made you sick based on time, because for some people they have... -
ARCHIVED Sick From Touching A Cookie?
gf4life replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Donna, next time try Pamela's brand cookies. The taste pretty good, and are wheat and gluten free. I don't know if you can absorb it into your skin, but I think sometimes it is hard to wash it completely off of your skin. It is best to use disposable plastic gloves if you have to touch a gluten food like the cookie dough or making sandwiches for... -
ARCHIVED Which Enterolab Test?
gf4life replied to Tasha2004's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree. I had a lot of symptoms, but still didn't think I could stick with it, without at least one test confirming that I had a problem with gluten. I am very glad I just went ahead and got the complete Stool and Gene Panel from Enterolab, especially since it included the milk sensitivity test (which I never would have ordered by itself) and I have... -
Open Original Shared Link I'm looking at the site right now. It is really hard to tell from a website. It took me a year of checking out Dr. Fine before I trusted Enterolab to do my celiac disease tests! I guess I am a skeptic, but anyone can make a nice website and make up information. Unless the information can be verified or supported by others...

ARCHIVED Csa Product Listing
gf4life replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Another good product list that is updated anually is the GFCFDIET Shopping Guide. It is for people on a gluten free casein (or dairy) free diet. You can find out more information about it at: Open Original Shared Link I don't want to get the other one from CSA, since it would also include the products that contain dairy ingredients. Too much sorting... -
ARCHIVED So Confused!
gf4life replied to newlife's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Most of my knowlegde of the disease has come from my reading everything I could get my hands on (either books or online information). I have spent the better part of 3 years doing research on the subject, and I am still learning more everyday! My children's GI says that I certainly know more about the disease than most doctors. He is the first doctor I... -
ARCHIVED So Confused!
gf4life replied to newlife's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The test for IgA deficiency is a Total Serum IgA blood test. Waiting until you can get into a doctor in September would be hard, but might be worth it. Doctors familiar with Celiac Disease are much more helpful that ones who don't. The average doctor will base their diagnosis (or lack thereof) on outdated information from medical textbooks or similar... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests
gf4life replied to kalo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Baruim x-rays can be done to show intestinal abnormalities, but they do NOT give a good enough view of the intestines to tell if the lesions have gone. Only the endoscopy can show that. There is the new camera pill that is supposed to be good, but without the tissue samples I'm not sure if they could tell if the damage is getting better. An MRI or a... -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Most Common Symptoms?
gf4life replied to Chantalle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
When I posted that list of symptoms on the old board it was from my own research. It is by no means a complete list. When a major study was concluded last year, February 2003, it was said that they found over 250 symptoms and related diseases associated with Celiac Disease. They will not release a printed copy of that list. (Believe me I tried to get one... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests
gf4life replied to kalo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Another one of the members here posted earlier this year about her bloodtest numbers being higher, but when they did the biopsy her intestine showed that she was healing. So you never know. Did they do a biopsy on you son? They could tell by repeating the biopsy and comparing the results. Otherwise the only way to tell is to watch the symptoms. God... -
ARCHIVED So Confused!
gf4life replied to newlife's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have they tested you for IgA deficiency? Something like 10% of Celiacs have this and it accounts for a large protion of those that tested negative on their IgA based celiac bloodtests. Most doctors do not know to test for this. After a month on the gluten free diet three weeks of gluten may not be enough to cause enough damage to be seen on the biopsy... -
ARCHIVED Blood Tests
gf4life replied to kalo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have you taken him off dairy too? Sometimes dairy can delay the healing process. If this is the case and he is still getting contaminated somehow, then it could explain the increase. What did the doctors say about it? I also wanted to say that not everyone is able to fully heal in six months time. Some people take much longer. How are his symptoms? ... -
Hi Karina, I'm sorry to hear that you are having other health problems, but please don't give up on the doctors too soon. If there is something seriously wrong you should find out now before it gets worse. There are a lot of advancements in medicine, especially having to do with heart disease, and if there is something wrong that can be fixed you should...

It depends on the brand. All Cake Mate decorations are gluten free. (these are what I use) Betty Crocker/Signature brands have some decorations that are gluten-free. All Dec-A-Cake are supposed to be gluten free. Some Wilton decorations are gluten-free. I did see some sprinkles to day at my son's class ice cream party that contained dextrin...

ARCHIVED From Failure To Thrive To Thriving?
gf4life replied to atristin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My children were never officially diagnosed with failure to thrive, but they are all small for their ages. My daughter was borderline failure to thrive at 12 months, but since her height, weight and head circumference were okay, they just figure she was just a petite girl. We now know it was celiac disease. My children went gluten and diary free in mid... -
Frosting would be fine on the brownies. I've frosted brownies before for school parties, since brownies were easier than cake. This was pre-gluten-free though. I'll be making gluten-free cupcakes for the class next week. My son will be 8 on June 10th( which is also the last day of school here!). I remember last October when my oldest turned 9,...

Molly, I think I've got it figured out. Try this: Delete everything you have. Then click on the color you want and the size you want it. Type everything you want to have that color and size and when you are done, click on "close all tags". Does that make sense? Try it and let me know if it works for you. You should be able to do this as many...

ARCHIVED What Do You Do About Cross Contamination?
gf4life replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anther problem with the hair products and make-up is that you will undoubtably touch your face or hair throughout the day, and unless you wash your hands every few minutes you may have gluten particles on your hands. You might then touch some food and will accidently ingest a few particles of gluten. This will probably not be enough for you to notice any... -
I'm sorry to here that Molly. I was wondering how you are doing finishing up 8th grade while at home. Do you get to participate in your graduation? That would be awful to miss the end of the year because you had to have your tonsils out and then miss two months of school next year! I hope this next surgery does it for you and that will be the...
