  1. Yes..he could be wrong. The small intestine is long. The scope doesn't reach all of it. It's very possible that you had villi damage outside of the scope's range. Also, several samples need to be taken for inspection. Some damage is only obvious under the magnification of a microscope. It's maddening isn't it?
  2. I'm so sorry the Dr.s you've seen are such jerks! I've been having Dr issues too. My new PCP doubts the DX the gI gave me. It's maddening. It wouldn't hurt to ask your Dr for blood tests to see where your vitamin/mineral levels are. Nothing ventured..nothing gained? I know the insurance companies make them justify any tests they order, but I would...
  3. Hopefully, it was just that the anal glands were full that caused this episode? We had a dog that had problems with them and apparently it's quite painful? Good luck to you AND your buddy!
  4. I've had colonoscopies and the endoscope. They don't "put you out" for those tests. They give you a sedative to make you relax..and it kind of makes you forget about the procedure. Good luck to you!
  5. I've only used it in the kitchen..but my hubby took it to work with a batch of chicken chili in it. To be honest..I need to use it more. Mostly it stays stored in the basement.
  6. NotMe!..you said you made sourkraut? I just recently read a magazine that said to make it you alternate layers of shredded cabbage with salt. That's it..and then you put a plate on top to keep the cabbage under the liquid that's formed. My whole life I though it was made with vinegar. Is it really just cabbage and salt..and does it smell bad while fermenting...
  7. It sounds like you have a good Dr? I'm happy for you that you've gotten your Dx without a bunch more tests and the run around. Now..just eat gluten-free and things should start healing.
  8. If you are eliminating gluten to see how you feel, you have to eliminate it completely. Gluten "light" may still give you symptoms. I was DXed with Celiac. My lymph nodes were enlarged at that time. Untreated Celiac can lead to intestinal lymphoma. I don't want that! Therefore, I'm super vigilant about even traces of gluten. Once I cut it from my diet...
  9. I've gotten copies of my blood tests, pics and report from the endoscope, biopsy report, etc. If I get sent anywhere I'm going in informed. If I'm told to go back on gluten or that my DX isn't valid for some reason..I'm walking out! I've been pretty depressed lately with the removal of soy from my diet along with the gluten. There are SO many foods I can...
  10. This "Dr." is actually in the Resident's program of our nearby hospital. She's a first year resident and has to report all of her cases to the rest of the "team" and the Dr's in charge of the program. Our Insurance dictates which Dr.s we can see and labs/Hospitals we can go to. This office is conveniently located, rather than across town which is why we go...
  11. Toledo Ohio. There is no support group in our city, so I'm guessing there aren't many Celiacs here..or Dr.s that are good at treating the disease?

ARCHIVED Saw My New Pcp Today..

I went to my new Primary Dr for the first time today. She asked how I was doing..so I told her about being DXed with Celiac at the beginning of July, and it's hard to deal with. I told I was keeping a food journal and writing down what I eat and any reactions I get because after starting the gluten-free diet I didn't feel better right away. I told her that...
  13. I'm going to try this recipe! Thanks so much for sharing it. It sure looks good.
  14. If you are a diagnosed Celiac you can NEVER have gluten! The damage will still happen. You may not notice it until you get to the point that you have malabsoption and start to get various symptoms that can come from that. The Lymphoma can occur too without tummy symptoms. I've had an intestinal cancer(not Lymphoma). I had no symptoms for quite a while...
  15. I tried the Gluten Free Pantry's French bread mix and made the pizza recipe on the box. Neither me, nor my gluten eating eating husband or son liked it one bit. It was very much like biscuit dough. When I could eat gluten pizza my favorites were Little Caeser's thick crust ot a thin crust one made by the Italian restaurant near here. It tasted sort...
  16. I've had problems with sleep too. Ambien didn't phaze me except that it gave me a headache the day after taking it. It's maddening. I take a melatonin about 1 hour before bedtime, along with .5mg xanax. If I'm especially "wired" I take 2 generic Benedryl as well. If your calcium level is low it can cause insomnia. Low calcium levels are common in Celiacs...
  17. My blood work came back negatice for Celiac, but the endoscope showed flattened villi. The GI specialist said it was Celiac Sprue. There's about 30% of us that have normal blood work but have Celiac disease. I'm surprised you didn't get a DX in 2004 with your first endoscope! I really wish Dr.s would learn more about the disease so they can DX sooner...
  18. It can all be pretty overwhelming at first. You will find that once you go comepletly gluten-free a lot of your symptoms you've had for years will go away. Your mood will improve too. Gluten poisons every part of your body and your mind, too. I totally understand the not wanting to cook aspect of the diet. Fast food is so convenient and this diet doesn...
  19. First, let me say..I don't think there's any way someone without the gluten reaction could fully understand cc? It just doesn't compute with them sometimes? I live in a household that's not gluten-free and find hazzards everywhere I turn! For prepping food I have a couple of plastic place mats that can easily be wiped off after using. It ensures I will...
  20. Natural flavors can mean MSG. It really bothers my system, as well as a lot of others I've spoken to. I'm wondering if that could be it? I wish they would quit adding things to meats! I think they add liquid solutions to increase the weight..so they're making more money on it? Infuriating! The veggies are more curious. If they're processed on lines that...
  21. I bought a couple of Lodge brand with the pre-seasoning. It needs to have a bit more added, but it's a nice start. I had an older fry pan I got at a yard sale and it seems much better? I chose the Lodge brand because their price is reasonable and they're made in America where there are regulations about the metals used. I've heard that the cast iron...
  22. Yes..one endoscope should be enough to find villi damage. That being said...several samples should be taken for biopsy at that time. In some cases villi damage may occur beyond the reach of the scope. The small intestine is pretty long and has lots of turns. So, unfortunately if there is no visible damage it doesn't mean it isn't there. A truly gluten...
  23. I get one every year. I have asthma and if I get a cold or flu it turns into pneumonia on me. This will be my first flu season gluten-free. So far my seasonal allergies and asthma haven't settled down, although I've heard that can be the case for many Celiacs once DXed and on a sctrict diet. I'm not taking any chances!
  24. When I got DXed I got rid of our teflon pans and got cast iron. I love the way I can brown meats with them. I wash them with plain water and a plastic scrubber after using, wipe dry, and rub a thin coat of bacon grease on the inside. Then I set it on the stove and turn the burner to high. Once it gets hot I turn it right back off and let the pan sit and...
  25. I'm so sorry you had to go through such a rough time. The Dr. is the one who orders meds and it's absolutely rediculous for him to order you ones with gluten! A surgery is hard enough to deal with. There's no excuse for putting you through being poisoned too. Best wishes for a fast recovery.
