ARCHIVED Irritable And Overwhelmed
Bubba's Mom replied to Marie1976's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I used to get migraines with severe pain on the left side of my head. Since going gluten-free I've gotten several with severe dizziness and nausea. I've read those symptoms come from a constriction of blood vessels at the base of the neck, but still a migraine. Call the pharmacy that dispensed your medicine and ask them to check if it has gluten. If not... -
My blood work came back negative as well, but the endoscope gave me a positive biopsy for Celiac. The blood tests aren't always accurate. Press for the endoscope and be sure to request at least 4 samples be taken(more is better). It's also possible that you are gluten intollerant. You will get many of the same symptoms, but not villi damage. Once the...

ARCHIVED False Negative
Bubba's Mom replied to wayne1983's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My blood work was negative also, but the Dr. went ahead with the endoscope anyway. It showed flattened villi..and I got a definite Celiac Sprue Dx. It's not uncommon to have the blood work be wrong. I think it's like 30% of the time that there's a failure to pick it up with blood work. Push for the endoscope. You could also have gluten intollerance.... -
ARCHIVED Heat Wave Is Wearing Me Out
Bubba's Mom replied to Coolclimates's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It's wiping me out too! Our air conditioner is struggling and not cooling the room very well. I keep getting very dizzy and weak. I don't want to eat. It was up to 103* yesterday with a dew point of 80*. I can't breathe if I go outside. Just lolling around and hoping to make through.. -
ARCHIVED Recommend A Probiotic With Bifiobacterium Lactis?
Bubba's Mom replied to lizdehart's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I did some looking around and I could only find this as a suppliment in New Zealand and Australia. Good news though..it's considered a prebiotic rather than a probiotic and is usually found in yogurt with live cultures and acidopholis milk. It looks like those are where you'll find it..as always..read the label? -
Unfortunately, Dr.s aren't required to study nutrition. It's an "elective" at some med schools! They're trained to write prescriptions for symptoms. Celiac disease is barely touched on in school as well. It was considered a rare disease, and schools haven't caught up with idea that it's so prevalent. Most Dr.s know little about it. Those of us who have...

OMG! Is nothing safe? Pour that poison down the drain..and drink lots of water. I hope you feel better quickly now that you know what was getting you.

I just read about this topic last night in a book The Gluten Connection by Shari Lieberman. She says if you are glutened, take digestive enzymes, preferably enteric coated. There's one called Wobenzym N ( made in Germany, but available in the US) or Glutenon (in Australia). The enteric coating ensures the tablet will not be digested by stomach acid and will...

ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Depressed About It All
Bubba's Mom replied to aroche84's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Congratulations on getting a diagnosis! Now you have some answers, and on a strict gluten free diet your health will improve. I'm newly diagnosed too, and the grocery store really brings on feelings of overwhelm and great sadness. I'm sure with time we'll know what to get and can breeze through? Stay to the outer parameter(other than the bakery) for healthy... -
ARCHIVED What To Do When The Doctors Dont Know What They Are Doing
Bubba's Mom replied to Jnell12's topic in Doctors
As I understand it..in the US you can claim the difference between the cost of regular food vs gluten free versions on your taxes. It would take a lot of book keeping and doesn't amount to enough of a savings to be worth it. BUT with a Dx of celiac or gluten sensitivity you can purchase gluten free foods with a Flexable Spending account. That is, money is... -
ARCHIVED What To Do When The Doctors Dont Know What They Are Doing
Bubba's Mom replied to Jnell12's topic in Doctors
If you've only been off gluten a very short time, I'd say eat some and schedule the blood test. BUT keep in mind, that the blood test isn't always accurate. Mine was normal, but my scope and biopsy told a different story. It doesn't pick up gluten sensitivity either. A genetic marker test will tell you if you have the genetic markers for Celiac, but not... -
ARCHIVED Vitamin/mineral Levels..
Bubba's Mom posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This all kind of new to me, but I have so many symptoms and I'm looking for answers. Once my GI DXed me she ordered a bone scan and a list of blood tests to check my vitamin/mineral levels. However, I'm not scheduled to go back to her until Aug 30, which ois over a month away. I had been taking vitamin suppliments all along, but so many of my symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Newbie With Lab Results And Questions
Bubba's Mom replied to brbangl3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The blood tests don't always tell the true story. Mine came back in the normal range, but the Dr scheduled an endoscope/with biopsy anyway. The scope is the "gold standard" of testing, if you have been eating gluten. Mine came back very definitely positive with severe damage evident. Don't just rely on the blood work..push for more answers. -
ARCHIVED Progression Of Untreated Celiac
Bubba's Mom replied to Sammyj's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I just got a book that someone here recommended..Recognizing Celiac Disease..Signs, Symptoms, Associated Disorders and Complications by Cleo J. Libonati. In this book it tells all sorts of other things that can be "Atypical" symptoms and side effects. It's really quite amazing how gluten can affect every part of your body. The book has charts that you... -
ARCHIVED Irritable And Overwhelmed
Bubba's Mom replied to Marie1976's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Another thing I thought I'd mention..if you're 3 months into gluten-free, you may not be absorbing the vitamins and minerals in your foods yet? I was just reading last night that it can take at least 6 months(or more) for villi damage to repair enough to work the way they're supposed to. I know we think we should see immediate results and it's disappointing... -
She may have another food sensitivity as well. Try to keep a record of everything she eats and see if there's something that sends her running to the loo? Also, even trace amounts of gluten can cause problems, so be very careful in that regard. I hope you find some answers for your little girl. It's so hard to watch our little ones have problems.

ARCHIVED How Do I Stop Being So Generous?
Bubba's Mom replied to Jenniferxgfx's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it's weird that my hubby will eat the things I've set aside. I surely wouldn't do that to someone with a limited food supply while I was surrounded with other options! Maybe it's laziness..or curiosity? But..he's heard me complain about the prices of some of the items, so you'd think he might leave them alone! I like the response about the cookies... -
ARCHIVED Argghh !. Why Is It So Hard To Find Out What's Happening ?!.
Bubba's Mom replied to Manonfire's topic in Doctors
I just wanted to add..check your toothpaste ingredients, spices that you cook with, are your pans/utentils, cutting board, toaster new or never been used with gluten? Are you handling pet food that may contain gluten? Are you eating small amounts of food at a time so you don't overload your angry digestive system? Just a few more things off the top... -
ARCHIVED How Do I Stop Being So Generous?
Bubba's Mom replied to Jenniferxgfx's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm kind of torn about this issue too. I get things that are gluten-free for myself, and treats my hubby and son like that aren't. Hubby won't bat an eyelash at eating up my snacks..and then going for stuff with gluten too. On the one hand..I'd like him to learn that Gluten-Free is ok. Then maybe I could switch to a Gluten-Free household? On the other... -
ARCHIVED Ex Gluten Test Strips?
Bubba's Mom replied to StephanieL's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I haven't tried the strips. I didn't know they existed? It sounds like the heat may have done something to them..due to it taking so long for a reading? I just wanted to say..I'm sorry for your frustration. I think if there's any doubt about a food's safety..I'd just not let the child have it? -
I went to a blog called glutenfreesupportoftoledo.com after seeing it in a newspaper article. It gives some info about celiac disease and tells how important a support group is. I left a question asking for more info in the comment section on June 22, 2011 and never got a reply. I Googled Toledo Celiac Support group just yesterday and found a group posted...

ARCHIVED When Do Symptoms Subside?
Bubba's Mom replied to Mamas3Bears's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I've been gluten-free for 2 1/2 weeks. I'm glad you asked the question. I still feel pretty lousy and wasn't given any sort of time frame to feel better. I felt awful after eating last night and wondered if it was normal. I'd like to add...yesterday my son grabbed the can opener to open his spaghettios. He asked if I had gotten a seperate can opener... -
ARCHIVED 17 Weeks Gluten Free...
Bubba's Mom replied to josh052980's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease

ARCHIVED Pimp My Fridge!
Bubba's Mom replied to thleensd's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I thought I would also mention another thing that helped me..I tend to get "brain fog" and not be able to think as clear sometimes. I find writing a list of meals I have the ingredients on hand to make is very helpful, along with a list of fruits and veggies, and snacks. If I'm kind of drawing a blank as to what to cook or snack on..there's my list!
