  1. I just started taking sublingual (under the tongue) B12. Since my villi are damaged I didn't know if regular vitamins would be absorbed? If you have damage too, taking it under the tongue will let it enter your body better. I got Kroger brand..a national chain grocery store here. They have their vitamins and supplements on sale buy 1 get 1 free quite often...
  2. Hello! I'm pretty new here too..I just wanted to welcome you. I hope you find some answers as to the cause of your hair loss. Checking your hair care products sounds like a great way to start? Also, have you had your thyroid checked? If it's acting up it can cause hair loss too..just a thought?
  3. I had very bad GERD. I went on prescription meds and after a while one would stop working and I'd go on another. It was real bad when I was eating gluten. It's the first symptom that settled down once I went gluten free. I haven't been gluten free for long..just over two weeks. I'm hoping at some point I can go off medication?
  4. Losing weight without trying was the first symptom my PCP took as real. I had lost 20 lbs. in just a few months. I was diagnosed on June 28th of this year and have been trying to eat things that are healthy. I'm still losing weight. I didn't know if was due to malabsorption..or lack of breads/cookies/ etc. in my diet? I mostly eat fruits and veggies,...
  5. My blood tests came back in the normal range. An endoscope with biopsy showed severe Celiac Sprue. Blood tests can be wrong! If you feel better without gluten..just treat yourself as if you had gotten a positive result. The treatment is the same. No gluten I hope you feel better soon.
  6. I think my husband has it..he has so many of the symptoms. His sister has poor health too, and his mother had a lot of the symptoms and a couple other auto-immune diseases. He has Hashimoto's, early onset osteo A, cardio vascular disease, gerd, restless leg syndrome, mood swings, pain in his legs, and now type 2 Diabetes, along with many others. He got mad...
  7. I'm very good at buying lots of fresh produce. Not so good at using things before they go bad. The vegetable crisper drawer used to be called the "drawer of death" here, because I'd put things in it and forget them. Now, with my change in eating I'm doing better. I find it's better to buy smaller amounts and go to the store more often. If I can buy...
  8. I'm wondering if some Dr.s push for a test to confirm Celiac/gluten intollerance to justify other follow up blood tests, etc? A lot of medical insurance companies put pressure on them when they order up numerous blood tests, etc. because they want to keep costs down. Having a confirmed diagnosis is what a Dr, needs to justify watching iron levels, b vitamin...
  9. Meatloaf made with smashed Rice Chex, baked sweet potatoes, and green beans with garlic and mushrooms. I'll be making stuffed peppers for tomorrow night's supper at the same time since I'll have the oven going. I'll just have to heat them up, saute some summer squash and make a salad. ; )
  10. Unfortunately, "gluten light" doesn't work. You must be completely gluten free in order to prevent the inflamation that causes your symptoms. Even things like pasta, that don't seem to give you a strong reaction should be avoided. Damage is happening, but you just aren't seeing it. It will be cumlutive though. Switch to a rice or quinoa based pasta so...
  11. I haven't tried making breads myself, but I read on blog to take aluminun foil and make little forms for the buns. I can't remember which one off hand... There's another one with a recipe and instructions. Open Original Shared Link
  12. My blood tests came back normal, but my symptoms were very strong. My colonoscopy was normal. My GI specialist did an endoscope and said there was no doubt. I had Celiac Sprue with severe damage. There's quite a few people that have normal blood tests, yet have celiac, or a gluten sensitivity. My best advice..go gluten free..completely. "Gluten light...
  13. That's really interesting. In the past I could never tolerate drinking alcohol. I'd get very sick rather than intoxicated. I wondered if something was wrong with my liver. I haven't had a drink in yars because it's not the least bit pleasurable. I wonder if that will change now that I'm gluten-free and on the road to healing?
  14. My blood test showed in the normal range. My endoscope showed severe damage. Blood tests don't show false positives, but they can show false negatives as decribed above. My advice would be to get the blood test. If that comes back positive, no reason to get the invasive procedure. It it comes back negative you may wise to get the scope so you know?
  15. Gluten can cause many different symptoms. It's one of the reasons it's hard to get a diagnosis. Since your reaction is joint pain, you may not see an immediate and severe response after eating small amounts of it. Those of us with digestive reactions get instant symptoms. If you are Celiac or gluten intollerant, it's best to keep every trace of it out...
  16. Eeeewww... thinking about storebrand cake is making me feel ill. It's my birthday and my sweet ole' mamma ordered me a chocolate cake from a local gluten free bakery. I'm pretty excited. Do you think your Mom would adopt me?
  17. I thought I should mention..if you're handling wheat bread when making the kids sandwiches..maybe get yourself some of those thin plastic disposable gloves like food handlers use so you don't get glutened. Also, if you use wheat flour in cooking for the family it will go airborn even tho you can't see it and breathing it in will gluten you. It's hard having...
  18. It's so encouraging to see all the improvements you all are having! I still have so many of the bad symptoms, but I feel more hopeful now. One REALLY big thing that bothers me is that all of my allergies became more pronounced about 2 years ago. I was having trouble breathing. Got tested and had tons of positive hits. I've been getting 2 shots a week...
  19. I've been on anti-depressants for 30 years. I've had issues with anxiety as well, and was prescribed xanax. Recently, as my undiagnosed celiac went raging out of control my anxiety level increased rapidly too. I got so I can't sleep more than an hour or two a night. My new Dr. found that damage to my villi is preventing my body from absorbing nutrients...
  20. Cutting a V is a great idea. In this case the shape of the steak was kind of unusual..sort of a figure 8, which caught my attention. This was my first time eating out since getting Dx. I'm just shocked at the ignorance/apathy of the staff. I wrote a letter to the management and mailed it off this morning. It might help the next person that goes...
  21. I'm in Toledo too! After many trips to my PCP with a laundry list of symptoms, he gave me a RX for anxiety med and ordered an ultrasound for the stabbing pain in my belly. It came back "fine" and he told me to eat Tums. I continued to get sicker and was losing weight, not able to eat. He ordered a CT scan and found enlarged lymph nodes. He said "something...
  22. It can all be a bit overwhelming can't it? I'm new to the gluten-free diet and still learning what's ok and what's not. I think you can put a few green beans on the plate with your carrot and be safe? I'm just teasing you, and hope you can keep a sense of humor going? I understand your frustration, but we gotta do what we gotta do right? Maybe if...
  23. Several relatives were visiting from another state and they thought it would be fun to see if we could get tother for dinner somewhere. A cousin found a restaurant that said they could accomodate a group and starting calling everyone to see if they could meet. The restaurant was an hour's drive for us, but we wanted to go IF the restaurant could serve...
  24. I've found that the brown Minute Rice makes a very good stir fry. It's not as sticky as regular rice, and is lower in carbs. I also use a large well seasoned cast iron fry pan. It adds a subtle wonderful flavor. My cast iron pan had been shoved to the back of the cupboard and had been sitting for years while I used Teflon instead. I pulled it out and...
  25. I've noticed I'm craving sweets too. I thought maybe it was because I'm eating more veggies and protein? Maybe our bodies are missing the carbs we used to eat? If I'm craving something sweet I grab several dried apricots, or a couple of Hershey's dark chocaloate kisses. Seems to work for me. Maybe with time the sugar cravings will go away?
