  1. I agree! We also love Europe and try to go every few years. This was our first trip gluten-free and it was our best one yet! My husband did the research before we left through the internet and a great book called "The Gluten Free Guide To Italy". Because of his research we ate in real local-type places. Not touristy spots, but off the beaten path restaurants...
  2. I don't eat any meat at all, but that's a personal choice. I wouldn't know how to tell you what brands are safe other than to say call them and ask if they inject their products with anything. I have a video that is mostly about "meat glue" but at the very end they briefly talk about how many meat manufacturers inject "flavor" solutions before they make...
  3. I agree with the others who say this needs to be reported. You should also inundate them with material on celiac disease and insist they read it. How dare they do what they did to your poor child! Would they give a child with a peanut allergy just a little bit to get her over it? Why would they assume that they know better than you? That is maddening...
  4. [quote name='josh052980' timestamp='1312075153' post='719685' Also, I grilled the chicken myself, it was fresh, so there is 0 chance it was injected with anything. All I did was salt and pepper it.
  5. We just took a trip to Italy and it was gluten-free heaven!!! There are several countries in Europe where it's really easy to travel gluten-free. Italy was so amazing we never wanted to leave!
  6. Unfortunately just because you don't have symptoms doesn't mean you don't have celiac disease. Some people are "silent celiacs", totally asymptomatic. Also there are over 300 symptoms of celiac disease, so you just never know. You may want to at least have a genetic test to find out for sure.
  7. I am very interested in this thread too. My period disappeared in March of 2010 and I've only had it once since. I would really like to have a regular cycle again because this honestly freaks me out. It just can't be normal not to have a period for this long! I'm hoping going gluten-free will help bring it back.
  8. I really like "gluten poisoning". That gets the point across with enough seriousness but still has a softer edge to it than "contaminated". Thanks!
  9. Funny! My youngest is super sensitive so there has been a lot of trial and error with him. He has been contaminated quite a few times in the last year I am sad to say. Twice really horribly, and the rest were "light" contaminations but made him sick none the less. We have found that he cannot eat anything made on shared equipment with wheat and that...
  10. I had a conversation with a TJ's employee yesterday. I was curious why some of their products say "made on shared equipment", some say "we employ good practices to lessen contamination" and some say nothing at all. There were some new sweet potato chips that my kids were dying to try. They are brand new and the bag has no warnings on it, but also no gluten...
  11. It's like we had the same doctor! When I was trying to get my son diagnosed his doctor flat out did not believe that I knew what was going on with my son. He accused me of "wanting" my son to have celiac disease! He also said that the diet was "incredibly difficult" and there was "absolutely no way you are adhering to it 100%". Well he sang a different...
  12. I learned this lesson the hard way too. ALWAYS ask. Do not assume. I'm sorry you're feeling bad. I hope it clears up for you ASAP.
  13. That's what I think too. The only reason I would want to dumb it down is because I really care about these friends and I don't want to freak them out. The friend that said this to me had very noticeably stopped inviting us over to her home. She admitted that she was terrified of poisoning us and that was due in large part to the language I choose. The...
  14. Thanks for the help! I am going to work in the more gentle language.
  15. A friend recently told me that the word I use when my sons or I accidentally get gluten was really scary. We say that we have been "contaminated" and it never occurred to me that could be construed as frightening until she said it. She pointed out that it was very technical or medical, almost like poison or a nuclear leak, and it freaked her out. I had...
  16. My son runs a fever when he has been contaminated. Sometimes they are even pretty high. Scares me to death!
  17. I'm with the other posters, it wouldn't be worth the risk for me. I can't do a gluten challenge with my youngest son (I believe, as does his pediatrician, that he wouldn't live through it) but I wouldn't do it with my oldest either, who shows much less outward symptoms than his brother. Your son is clearly gluten intolerant. Would that label alone be enough...
  18. I called Rice Dream in June of last year about this issue. They assured me that the enzymes they use are completely gone and the product is tested to be gluten-free. My son is highly sensitive and he has no issues with Rice Dream at all.

    ARCHIVED Tipping

We also tip really well, and regularly call corporate offices to tell them how wonderfully we were treated. I think doing both things really help encourage restaurants to keep gluten-free items on the menu and adhere to their cc practices. We are excellent repeat customers when everything goes right!
  20. I talked to my local Ruby's about this too. I spoke with the manager who assured me that they have provisions in place to avoid cc. We are vegetarians so there is very little we can eat there, but occasionally I will eat fish so I had the tuna melt on the gluten-free bun. It was great and I didn't have a reaction.
  21. When a friend of mine had her baby she requested a "wheat free" meal while in the hospital. They brought her a sandwich on white bread. "Well, it's not wheat bread." was the reply from the hospital staff.
  22. CPK was a staple of ours before everyone was diagnosed (me and both of my children). Their BBQ chicken pizza (sans chicken, I sub avocado instead) was my absolute favorite food of all time. I was SO excited when I found out they were starting a gluten-free menu! Before we went I called our local restaurant and talked to the manager to make sure they were...
  23. I totally understand. My youngest son was diagnosed a year ago, and my oldest just last week. On top of that, I have it too. I went from worrying about one kid, to worrying about both kids and myself! Thankfully we were already 100% gluten-free in the house so very little changes there. I find now that I have to grieve all over again for the loss of...
  24. I could have written this exact list! In fact I showed it to my husband who said "WOW! It's like you wrote it." Isn't crazy how many different things are affected by gluten? I am amazed at how much better I feel having only been on the diet for 7 months. (With several self-induced gluten challenges to "test" whether or not it was really gluten that was...
  25. That's exactly what I'm afraid will happen. And it's basically what my mom already said. "Oh honey, I've been sick all my life. They can never figure it out. It's just who I am." I want to shout at her sometimes. I KNOW this could help her. I even think it could make her live longer. Even if she doesn't want to get tested, just trying going gluten...
