  1. Well said! It drives me crazy when someone says they could "never" give up their favorite gluteny food. Do they think I love NOT having my favorites anymore? Of course not! It's hard. But we do it because we have to.
  2. Maybe you could ask him to spend some time on this board? I've found this more enlightening than any book or other website that I've found.
  3. I posted a very similar thread (but without such a great, catchy title!) when my youngest child was diagnosed. I was sick and tired of hearing people tell me how "lucky" he was. I felt like smacking them! Now my older child and I have also been diagnosed. Not as many people think we're "lucky" anymore.
  4. I found this link which should be helpful. Open Original Shared Link
  5. I'm sorry for what you and your family are going through. It sounds like a nightmare and I hope your brother gets some relief ASAP. You sound like you really have a handle on taking care of your brother and keeping him as gluten-free as possible. I just wanted to add that you may want to make the entire household gluten-free right away. There are numerous...
  6. I just took a piece of rice out to demonstrate exactly that to my kids. We noticed how incredibly small 1/4 piece of rice is and then talked about how we should never eat more than one "gluten-free" processed product in a day.
  7. We are a homeschool family and love every second of it! In fact, we just got back from a rather spur-of-the-moment camping trip in the middle of the week. (One of my favorite things about homeschooling is the free schedule. You can go whenever and wherever your education may take you!) My kids are very into astronomy, but we live in the city where it...
  8. When I stayed for 3 days with family recently I brought absolutely everything I needed with me. I had two suitcases on the plane. One big one, full of food, utensils, etc and a little one with the rest of my stuff. It worked out really well. No contamination and I had a great time.
  9. Think of it this way. If you were the only one buying it, the stores would stop selling it. The more people that buy and eat gluten-free products all the better for us.
  10. I would bring my own food, dishes and utensils. That way you can enjoy the day and still eat yummy stuff without getting sick.
  11. I put it everywhere I could. I am friends with some family members on facebook so I constantly post things there. We also have a family website and I posted a long letter there too. I remind family whenever I can. I know they are listening because some of them have even made half-hearted attempts (and failed) at going gluten-free. But so far none of...
  12. I think a lot of us have done that. Don't feel bad. I did it three times! I kept thinking that it was all in my head, and so I tested it on three different occasions. Not THAT'S stupid!
  13. I was scared to death to go to our family's "Girl's Weekend" with my aunts, female cousins, etc. I knew it would be the first time I would be around a ton of gluten with ZERO protections. I was right too. Pizza, bread, danish, cookies, oh my god it was a wheat-fest! I almost didn't go. But I'm so glad I did. I packed an entire little suitcase...
  14. I actually have heard of this. Anorexics will fake having celiac disease. Saying they are gluten-free knocks a bunch of food off the list for them (as we all know) and makes it easier to disguise their disorder. I have heard this on more than one anorexia board. I'm guessing that is where the "joke" comes from.
  15. I thought it was May too, but I'm getting stuff about October being celiac disease awareness month in my email inbox this week. I remember, a long time ago, reading something about why this is so, but I can't remember, and it's driving me crazy!
  16. I went through a similar issue. Our pediatric GI did not believe that I knew how to "properly administer" (his words, not mine) a gluten-free diet to my child. He said it was "too hard" and that "basically no one gets it right". When I assured him that I knew we were 100% gluten-free he didn't believe me. Not until the tests results proved it. The he...
  17. I know I read something about this before, but after an extensive Google search, I can't find the answer. Could someone please tell me why both May and October come up as celiac disease Awareness months? Thanks!
  18. Love this post! Being celiac has given me a great many things. Good health first of all. After being sick for so many years, realizing that a diet change can make me feel good again is amazing. I also am very thankful for the early diagnosis for both of my children. They will never have to suffer like I did. And on a vain note, I've lost 30 pounds...
  19. Yup. I can't do dairy either. That was the catalyst for becoming a vegan. I was already a vegetarian and I figured why not, if I can't eat cheese anymore I might as well go all the way.
  20. No wonder you're frustrated. I'd be frustrated too if I was living off peanut butter sandwiches! You'll be fine if you stick to whole foods. Veggies, fruits, beans, legumes, and grains like brown rice, and quinoa. Easily portable foods are cooked sweet potatoes, hard boiled eggs, raw or steamed veggies and fruits. Whenever I am eating out with friends...
  21. I don't think you need your landlord's permission to put up a sign. I have been a renter for 20 years and have never asked permission for something like that. We have a sign on our front door and my landlord has never even mentioned it. But I agree that kids won't pay attention to any sign. It's more for adults.
  22. There are a lot of people here who are self diagnosed. You can choose to stop eating gluten whenever you want. If you take gluten out of your diet and feel better, who cares if you're diagnosed or not? It sounds like you are really suffering and looking for answers. The answer could be right in front of you. Go gluten-free and see if it helps. And I...
  23. I agree totally with StephanieL. If they already know the baby has food allergies they shouldn't introduce anything else at daycare. BUT if they are doing it, whole foods would be the best bet. Avocados, bananas, apples, squash, basically fruits and veggies. I wouldn't add cereals or anything with additives of any kind.
  24. I agree with the other poster. These are your kids and they need to respect your wishes whether they agree with them or not. I homeschool my kids too and it would be an understatement to say that my parents didn't think it was a good idea at first. Now we are in our 7th year of homeschooling and they can see how well my kids thrive. Sometimes it just...
  25. I would open a vegan, gluten-free restaurant. I so wish I had something like that near me.
