ARCHIVED I Need Help Understanding
pricklypear1971 replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Have you tried Nasalcrom on your DH? There's a recipe on the chronic urticaria site - just Nasalcrom (or any cromolyn source) mixed with Vanicream. It would help me sometimes - depended on the stage of the lesions. -
ARCHIVED Want A gluten-free Thanksgiving? Hound Relatives To Get Tested!

Oh, I wish! This year I'm cooking so no problem there. Next year, who knows... This year, to keep it simple for dessert I'm making chocolate cheesecake. I may break down and make some pies because I saw gluten-free pie crusts at whole foods yesterday - id do pecan and sweet potato. -

If you have DH you have Celiac. That's the official dx in the medical community. DH is genetically based, just like Celiac. It is "normal" for DH patients to have fewer GI issues, and less intestinal damage. Find a dermatologist who can biopsy your rash. If it comes back positive you will have a Celiac dx. -
ARCHIVED Sharing An Experience...
pricklypear1971 replied to unknown's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As one funny man said..."You can't fix stupid". Just leave it at that and walk away. -
I found this:Open Original Shared Link It mentions some genetic associations for DH. Anyone heard of this association? And what are DW3 and DRW3? Are these genes that are found on typical Celiac tests?

Yep! I don't know how you make your pancakes but check your mix for carageenan and sea salt. Some do have them. Just want to clarify on the egg whites - if you buy a carton of whites it will say 3 Tbsp. = 1 egg. In a pinch, I'd just seperate your eggs...buy whites later. Or, if you want to use two egg whites to = 3 Tbsp. go for it. And make sure you... -

If you see this in the morning.... You can make pancakes with egg whites and water! Try the antihistimes and if they help, use them. DH isn't an allergic reaction so it typically doesn't go away when you take them. If they do respond to antihistimines you may look into other skin problems (although who knows...). -
When he's old enough to eat out, let him eat gluten. Otherwise, you're risking everyone else's health if you bring it in the house. And when he's that little, it's a huge risk to you - what he touches, touches you!

ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?
pricklypear1971 replied to LOWNskater52's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I lived in Jax for about 9 years. My parents live in St. Aug now. You may like a rice cooker, but be warned the "cup" is NOT a cup. Personally, I'd rather clean a pot... I'd cook veggies seperately - putting them in the rice (unless you have a rice cooker) changes cooking time, etc. Go to the store and pick out whatever veggies appeal to you and... -

About two years to decide to go to the doc about the thyroid (I knew what it was, runs in the family). About three years to see about the lingering thyroid symptoms (DH pressed the point). So no, you aren't the only one with your head buried on the sand (or HAD it buried....). Look, you must accept that the inquisitive guy is buried underneath something... -
ARCHIVED I Suspect I Am Gluten Intolerant. Any Advice?

Lownskater, Are you from FL or GA? Does your family cook rice in a pot? I ask because of your reaction to a rice cooker...my family is from LA and I cook rice in a pot. Can't tell you how many people don't know how to do it and lift the lid to look in! Anyway, the rice cooker is great if you are cooking fast, but quite frankly I hate the... -

ARCHIVED Hypoglycemia
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, I do a lot of combo snacking. It's just weird how some stuff that should work, doesn't. And something that makes me sick (in excess) can also fix it in an emergency. I've noticed if I get too much sugar and crash, I have to counter it later with another strong sugar. Literally like a hangover. If I don't eat sugar (in the literal sense), I can... -
Okay, I'm struggling with this hypoglycemia thing. Finding the perfect snack (and wanting to hurl after eating it 29 times) makes me homicidal. I thought I got away with eating Halloween candy, but woke up the next day with a sugar hangover. Ironically, guess what I figured out last night??? Peanut m&m's are the perfect fix it food. 1 fun pack...

pricklypear1971 replied to IWannaSammich's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I get it. I felt that way when I was dx'ed with Hashimoto's six years ago. And quite frankly if I wouldn't have gotten the dang rash (DH) I probably would have continued... but here we are, right? I would ask for vitamin/mineral panels and the Thyroid panel, and a Hashimoto's test (TPO). Your symptoms, above, are indicative of both/either. Celiac... -

pricklypear1971 replied to IWannaSammich's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you had vitamin/mineral panels run? Vit b, full iron including ferritin, vit d, a, k are suggested. If you are low on those, it can make you miserable...especially neurologically. Also, has your thyroid been tested and have you been tested for Hashimoto's disease? -
ARCHIVED Why Are People So Insensitive?
pricklypear1971 replied to espresso261's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I haven't ventured out much....but I just smile and say "no thanks, I'm allergic" and that usually works. I know it will get more complicated. I always assume I can't eat, and take something with me or eat before. I have found that most upscale restaurants can provide a gluten-free option. A buffet is challenging, and I'll be tackling that next week... -

Are they raw carrots? Cook them. You need to try digestive enzymes with each meal to help your body break down your food. Right now your body just can't do it alone. Also, stick with easy to digest foods - like potatoes, rice mentioned above. And stay away from those smoothies. Eat whole pieces of fruit if you want fruit, and always mix a fruit with... -

ARCHIVED I Need Help Understanding
pricklypear1971 replied to squirmingitch's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Ok, I'll give it a whirl. First, google "thyca" - that is a website for a low iodine diet for thyroid irradiation. It tells you more about iodone than I can repeat. In relation to DH - Dairy is high in iodine due to feed and iodine used to clean equipment. Carageenan is a seaweed derivative, which comes from the ocean, which means its high in... -
ARCHIVED Travel Tips Needed
pricklypear1971 replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If its a long day I put both in, during the summer. I literally layer the packs 2 layers deep. And a marine cooler helps. Also, try to keep the cooler off the floor of the vehicle - the asphalt gets 130+ and sometimes the floorboards get too hot to touch comfortably. We put the chests on top of something and in the ac if we can. -
ARCHIVED Tinnitus And Balance Problems/mild Vertigo
pricklypear1971 replied to Pegleg84's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
In retrospect one of my first symptoms was vertigo and dizziness. Wrote it off to allergies. It intensified at the end just before dx. Had one morning when I literally fell down when getting out of bed - the world was sideways. I still don't get many stomach issues with gluten - but do get a weird swimmy, drunk feeling....and apparently it's the...
