ARCHIVED De-Swelling
pricklypear1971 replied to stellagogo's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am so right there with you. I have been gluten-free for about 2 months. At first I gelt great (after the first week of raging ups and downs), except my rash (probably DH) isn't gone. I think I got glutened last week and it's been up and down every day. I slept for 12 hours (of course, I was sleeping 5 during gluteningand antibiotic reaction) last night... -
ARCHIVED Do You Get Scars Are The Noticable
pricklypear1971 replied to Flasaltwater's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Ice packs stop my itching temporarily. I walk around with them tucked under my arms. Yes, my DH is under my pits. I also use a cromolyn cream I make using a recipe on the chronic urticaria site. Google it, easily made without an RX. Burns a bit but then it goes numb, thank goodness. I take lengthy lukewarm showers to soften the "scab" then gently rub... -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With In-Laws Who Make The Process Of Eating Into An Event?
pricklypear1971 replied to Maltiriel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Depends on your tolerance, I guess. I walked through a bakery the other day without anything happening, but that's me. Just try to stay out of that area and do other things. Or show up late??? You're going to have to go, you know that...if not now then eventually. I also understand the weird vibe - it was kind of like that with my inlaws, but... -
ARCHIVED Cant Function Safely After Glutening
pricklypear1971 replied to Kquad's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, I have memory issues, dizziness, inability to comcentrate, sore joints AND SHAKY HANDS from gluten. I have virtually zero stomach issues. Apparently I also have DH.... My liver and adrenal system are a bit confused, especially after 2 shots of corticosteroids, prednisone, etc. For the "hives" (DH). I'd never try steroids, they'd probably send... -
ARCHIVED Should I Cheat? Olive Garden..
pricklypear1971 replied to BarbieGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Get the mixed grill, specify gluten free. You can eat the salad, no croutons. I've had it and it was fine. And good. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Dh Rash
pricklypear1971 replied to Sam81's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think there's one "look" to it. Have you had bloodwork done to suggest Hashimotos, other thyroid problems, celiac, etc? If any of those are positive I'd definitely suggest a biopsy. Or, if your dermatologist will biopsy now, DO IT. Then stop eating gluten and see what happens. -
ARCHIVED What Is Gluten Withdrawal?
pricklypear1971 replied to shayre's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I guess I'm lucky because mine lasted a week. I was pretty much a raging lunatic, though. Dangerous because my brain was working again for the first time in forever.... I was obsessed for about 6 weeks with trying every gluten-free processed food. Got over that when I glutened myself. -

Go to the about.com boards, thyroid section. Lots of info there. Also, get one of Mary Shomon's books. -
ARCHIVED Most Recent Thyroid Labs
pricklypear1971 replied to cahill's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am on combo t3/t4. I have used synthetic and natural and respond to both. Its really something you have to try, I think. Some people don't feel well without both, others don't notice, and some react negatively. I always insisted ont t3/t4. I will be going off thyroid usp to synthetic combo soon. My dr. Did increase one hormone but not the other to achieve... -
ARCHIVED Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria And Angioedema
pricklypear1971 replied to thleensd's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Dermagraphism I don't know about...but do know about Hashi's, chronic hives, and Dermatitis Herpetiformis. Specifically, being diagnosed with chronic autoimmune hives and it really being DH. My DH (biopsy pending) was masked by corticosteroid injections, pills, and cream. Once those were removed my DH starting liking and acting "normal". Before they looked... -
ARCHIVED Wedding Etiquette?
pricklypear1971 replied to frogrun's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Frogrun, I would gracefully inform the bride that YOU will handle this and tell her you will arrange a special meal for yourself. Make it easy and graceful and I'm sure she'll appreciate your honesty and willingness to take it off her shoulders. -
ARCHIVED How To Deal With In-Laws Who Make The Process Of Eating Into An Event?
pricklypear1971 replied to Maltiriel's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, this is rather interesting since I'm one of those baking and cooking madwomen. However, my ex sister-in-law was dairy intolerant and I (and my mother) tried to accommodate her and she was quite grateful. We just tried to be honest about the ingredients and she would suggest alterations or she just wouldn't eat that particular thing. All in all, it... -
ARCHIVED The Many Issues That Have Come Up
pricklypear1971 replied to MacheHill's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am diagnosed with Hashimotos, working on Celiac diagnosis and DH. I also recently developed TMJ. TMJ is "inflammation", which is caused by celiac. Try TMJ massage/adjustment. Don't try surgery! I understand exactly what you mean. I had a melt down last night over "falling apart". I just remind myself it could be worse and then try to pick myself... -
ARCHIVED Is It Anything To Do With The Ear?
pricklypear1971 replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I've read one of the symptoms is vertigo (which I started getting). Some people have more neurological and systemic issues than others. A nasty virus can trigger ear problems...you'll probably never know. -
ARCHIVED Another Location ?!
pricklypear1971 replied to Hopeful1950's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Sorry to hear you have it down there Schelbo. My suspected DH (supposed to have it biopsied but doubting my strength to purposely gluten myself) is under my arms - so my lymph glands swell, i get pit b/o when the scans form, I can't wear a bra without aggravating it and causing pain...and since I'm a D cup that limits my life quite a bit during flares. ... -
ARCHIVED Questions About Thyroid Test
pricklypear1971 replied to UpbeatPete's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am Hashis and probably Celiac (undergoing testing). My doctors (the GOOD ones) look for a tsh in the 1's -or- whatever makes you feel good. That said, it's hard to judge "good" when you've been miserable! Get the Hashi antibody test, and test frequently to see if your tsh levels change, and if you hit a recovery wall insist on trying supplementation... -
ARCHIVED Maybe Celiac Realized Thru Dh
pricklypear1971 replied to JandMs Mommy's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I use Vanicream and a layer of Vaseline over it. My healing sores dry out terribly and it's all I have found that does the trick, and I still have to put 3+ layers every day. It grosses me out because I am an all-natural girl but can't find anything else that doesn't make me sting or burn. FYI - I was put on antibiotics because my rash was so inflamed... -
I began treatment for a rash (probably DH, biopsy soon) with a dermatologist. First thing he gave me was a rx for a mild topical corticosteroid. Then the rash spread, and he have me a shot of Kenalog. Made me high as a kite, no remission. Then he gave me prednisone, and rash remitted (and I lost my mind). Got off prednisone, rash came back. Second shot of...

ARCHIVED My Newly Diagnosed 8 Year Old Son
pricklypear1971 replied to vveloso75's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I found these recipes the other day, and the siopao uses non-gluten rice flour. If you read the comments, some people go round and round with it but many have success. Open Original Shared Link And this one: Open Original Shared Link Most dishes are made as usual, if you can find the gluten-free ingredients mentioned above. -
ARCHIVED Rice Works Chips
pricklypear1971 replied to dhiltonlittle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just bought some of the Sweet Chili Riceworks chips at Costco. I ate a bowl-full and within 30 minutes my suspected DH started boiling up. I know have a giant, itching, burning rash under both arms. Again. I'm thrilled. I don't know if its gluten but whatever it is will keep me away. -
ARCHIVED Dealing With Family
pricklypear1971 replied to Schatz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Interesting question. I started gluten-free about two months ago. Since I'm the cook in the household our gluten containing food is almost nil. I keep a few things for my son (age 9) and husband. My son is semi-tolerant of the gluten-free idea. Most foods he likes the taste of... but he does ask me constantly why I am so worried about gluten - usually... -
ARCHIVED New, Stressed, And Confused
pricklypear1971 replied to CurlyCyn83's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
From my perspective you have the best and clearest diagnosis available from an MD without undergoing an additional biopsy. Your disease may be early; therefore the damage to your intestines are patchy or just not there, or they didn't take enough samples. You have the positive bloodwork, you feel better without eating gluten. Be happy they DIDN'T find... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Gene Pairs
pricklypear1971 replied to stellagogo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am Hashis, and probably Celiac. Hashis treatment (synthetic and natural thyroid) fixed a lot of my problems. Temporarily. Five years later I hit rock bottom and got this nasty little rash.... My NP suggested a gluten fasting trial...SHE is Celiac and doubted I was Celiac! Well, the trial worked - got rid of the rest of my "Hashis symptoms", except... -
ARCHIVED How To Get Relief From Itching?
pricklypear1971 replied to Di2011's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I use a homemade cream I found on the Chronic Urticaria website:Open Original Shared Link I have not been diagnosed with DH - appt. is Sep. 8; however, I have had my rash for apx. 2 years now. I use the cream and while it isn't perfect, its better than anything else most days. I did discover that plain old Vaseline is the best thing for my rash after...
