  1. Be VERY careful. Prednisone almost put me in the hospital. How is that supposed to help, if you don't mind me asking? If you feel odd in any way (read the long list of side effects on webmd) CALL THE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY AND DO NOT LET THEM PUT YOU OFF!!!! With a celiac/systemic issue you are at greater risk on corticosteroids.
  2. Do you have DH? If so don't forget the iodine thing going into surgery!!!'
  3. I can't over emphasize the iodine thing. Try it for a few weeks. You'd be surprised-go through vitamins, all processed foods, etc. Ditch the sea salt, dairy, seafood, iodized salt.... It works. If you try it for a week and no progress it isn't the iodine. Low iodine isn't forever, just till they heal.
  4. And reflux IS a GI symptom. I understand sensitive stomach issues. You may need IV vitamins/minerals for a while. Seriously.
  5. You need to stop eating out at the questionable places AND get back to see a doctor. Just because you font have an immediate and obvious reaction at the questionable places doesn't mean it isn't getting to you. Give it a break, at least for a few weeks, and see if it helps. Also, are you taking digestive enzymes with food? That will help break it down...
  6. Yes, Dapsone but it's pretty evil stuff so you may reconsider. I think the corticosteroids kept the rash knocked down a bit (didn't have as weepy blisters as I did off it) but it never went away while using it. Got off them, the rash blew up (be prepared and do it on a Friday) but when it went down it went down further and healed like never before. Dermatologists...
  7. Any processed food I buy is zero salt, so I don't hit iodine. That means I eat lots of unsalted food since salting it with safe salt isn't always an option. Noticed I am now super-sensitive about how salty my food is. Had to eat at Chipotle today...long story. Wow it tasted salty! Noticed salt-free chips tasted good without salt. And I think my DH flared...
  8. You need ice packs, pronto! And I know you don't want to hear this but corticosteroids actually stopped my DH from healing (best as I could tell). Everyone is different.
  9. He may very well have other intolerances. Most common is casein. It also takes a while to heal from gluten. Don't split hairs over the diagnosis. If he's better without gluten he's better - don't argue with success. I'd try taking him off milk next since it's the most common.
  10. TPO is a specific test for an antibody that shows your thyroid is being attacked by an autoimmune disease. Not all hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimotos. Sorry, should have said TSH not T3 - although there are t3 tests (see about.com).
  11. The thyroid test for Hashis is TPO. It is NOT standard. What were your results for t3? Most normal ranges are .5-5.5. Good thyroid docs say optimal is around the 1's. Visit about.com thyroid section for good, free advice and how to arm yourself before going to the doc. It may be worth it to go to a Naturapath, who will have pity and order the tests...
  12. Maybe. That's why they tell you to use egg whites. Some cage-free eggs intentionally have some nutrients boosted through feed. I bought a carton of egg whites and that's what I'm using for a while.
  13. Thanks for the tip. I think I've been to that site. I actually used apple cider on my pits this am-and it does kill b.o. Don't know if it will last-burned a tad on my DH but I can dilute it next time.
  14. Trader Joe's gluten-free hot dogs, gluten-free buns, carrot/broccoli/apple salad, salt-free potato chips (got to watch that DH), grapes, and Talenti raspberry gelato for dessert. The low-iodine thing is killing me.
  15. Funny you mention it... I read about it in connection with Hashis but the description didn't sound like me. I see incomplete descriptions of celiac/gluten problems everywhere. It boggles my mind. I can't understand how something that effects 1 in 133 people is not routinely screened for. Especially in vulnerable populations. Having Hashis puts me at...
  16. You can be gluten intolerant and still be sick as heck, not to mention it can be involved with other chronic diseases. The Enterolab test can check for DQ1 gene which is related to intolerance. In short, it's hard to prove gluten intolerance other than by gluten withdrawal and challenge. And yes, it can take a while to heal.
  17. Depends. I was a raging lunatic for a week. Had to give up milk Thursday (lower iodine for DH) and that is driving me nuts. Gluten was easy in comparison.
  18. Yes, but I'm pretty sure doctors could SEE back then. You still see mentions of how DH can look different, bit never described in this detail. I think it's a great reference for those who think their DH must look a certain way. I noticed mine looks different - over time and by location. Some docs will be more concerned with a look rather than...
  19. I'm Hashis, pending celiac/gluten/DH diagnosis. What works: a gluten-free diet, thyroid meds(t3/t4), multivitamins, probiotics, and digestive enzymes with each meal, and for me a low-iodine diet to get rid of the DH. Yes, regular light exercise. Helps regulate hormones, etc.
  20. How are you doing your family a favor by getting glutened at home? I understand your thinking (I thought the same) til I realized a sick mom is no good for anyone, I let them get their fixes somewhere else that doesn't involve me. I take that night of no cooking and relax. And yes, after you are gluten-free people say you become more sensitive. Just...
  21. Sounds like your Dad's house would be great - freedom to cook since they aren't.
  22. Get yourself a crock pot (YOURS) and cook YOUR food in it. Buy a toaster oven (you can bake in it). BUY a loaf of gluten-free bread. Fight to get healthy enough to move out. Sometimes you've got to pick your battles, and right now you must CHOOSE TO SAVE YOUR LIFE. You can't change your family but you can survive them. Maybe later y'all can repair...
  23. Well, I haven't gutted my cosmetics yet but have worked in some of the others. Shampoo - JR Ligget's Lotion - Vanicream Body wash - Dove (but I don't like it, has a scent) Face wash - superfine sugar and brown rice flour. SERIOUSLY. face lotions/potions - Devita I use natural cosmetics but dont think they contain wheat. Had to ditch my henna color...
  24. Also add a good multivitamin. Gluten and Hashi people are low on lots of things and a multi helps. Vitamin/ mineral supplements help balance things out. Make sure you get mild exercise 3x a week, too.
  25. Was the stir fry homemade and msg-preservative free? I ask because most premade ones have nasty nasty stuff in them and you may have a problem with that, too.
