ARCHIVED I Think This Maybe The Answer.
pricklypear1971 replied to mandyblue's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would also (and this is the slightly paranoid person I am) tell someone at work, home, your "in case of emergency" person that you suspect a wheat allergy. It may come in handy if you accidentally get into something. -

I don't know if I'm reading the labels correctly, but are some of the neocate formulas lower in iodine than others? It would be worth comparing - since it may be necessary to try lowering iodine. If any are low-ish and within his age/needs range it may be worth a whirl. I'd try gluten-free for a while first then try li (if possible) if you think you're... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free German Chocolate Cake

I've found most people can't tell. I've also found most people don't know what a homemade cake tastes like, anyway - so a gluten-free homemade cake is still an upgrade. . It looks yumm-o. -
ARCHIVED Need Testing Again!
pricklypear1971 replied to Rustywrench's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
How much will you pay me to hear "you have Celiac Disease"? Oh shoot, I'll say it for free. You have Celiac Disease. A military doctor told you so (which is a minor miracle in itself). Just because they lost the form doesn't make it less true; plus, you have the DH dx, still. A DH dx is a Celiac dx. You do need to visit a doctor, to get vitamin... -

It's really weird what can set you off.... I pigged out on gluten-free Halloween candy last year. Was great, til it wasn't. You'll find your crutch and addiction. Mine was Talenti gelato. OMG. I should buy stock.... -

I think several people have had problems. They say they are safe except the seasonal and shaped. I assume shared lines? Open Original Shared Link It may just be too processed a food - especially if you're at the beginning of gluten-free. I like them but I don't eat them now. Just too much "junk" in them for me to process. I may be ok with one bit no... -

No, that wasn't what I'm getting at (though there may be a link, I really don't know what other class it's in). I was just posting something about chronic urticaria (which DH seems to have a lot in common with as far as activation) and sals. I think you just have a problem with quinoa. Plain and simple. Btw MSG and other sals gave me neuro symptoms... -

I was looking up quinoa/sals (because I was curious) and found this... Chemical Similarities Salicylates are very similar in chemical structure to nitrates /nitrites, benzoates, oxalates and sulphates/sulphites, and are a major component of many food colourings and flavourings. I also experience similar reactions to foods containing even traces of these... -

The itchy skin and watery eyes sound like more of an allergic reaction. It may be worthwhile to be tested for wheat allergy in a medical setting. If you really think this may be your issue, I advise steering very clear of wheat until you get it figured out. Mild allergies can ramp up without warning and you don't want to be in that situation. Have you... -
ARCHIVED Possible Rash From Gluten? (Pic Heavy)
pricklypear1971 replied to SPJandE's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Oh, another thing-if it is DH keep it moisturized. It is very important to "baby" the skin so it will heal. I apply Vanicream several times a day to healing scabs. I even put a band-aid on a spot in my finger because it touches so many things and is easily irritated. -

I agree. Ironically, the best "clue" or convincing thing you can do (other than documenting a positive response to gluten-free) is to get the rest of your family tested for Celiac. If one or more of you come up positive it will be a huge red flag for his doctors. And, as he gets older and starts solids he'll need gluten-free food, and if you start going... -

pricklypear1971 replied to crissy82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sorry you're feeling so down. There's no reason to avoid sauces and spices if they are gluten-free. Most spices - pure spices - are gluten-free. Spice BLENDS may contain gluten. Read the label. Sauces don't always contain gluten - if you make it at home or withgf ingredients it will be gluten-free. If you are eating out, yes, unless you know... -
ARCHIVED Keeping Your Hands Clean While Traveling?
pricklypear1971 replied to BabsV's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Make your own soap and water wipes. One baggy - soap and water on paper towels. Second baggy - water only on paper towels. It's the soap part that gets the gluten off. No need to over complicate it. -

Stop eating quinoa. There are quite a few people who have problems with it. Luckily it isn't a commonly used food so it should be easy to avoid. -

Unfortunately there is no "normal". There's typical, which unfortunately has been taken as "only" by many doctors. Also, unfortunately, once you go gluten-free (and if it is the source of the problem) you will not be able to reliably test him without reintroducing gluten. I know this is incredibly difficult; however, you are going to make yourself nuts...
