ARCHIVED Regarding Groceries And $$....
pricklypear1971 replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Dried beans, peas can go a looooong way and are super-cheap. Do y'all like Indian? Try an Indian cookbook and see if you can work some of those recipes in. -
ARCHIVED If You Own A Cat...
pricklypear1971 replied to JoyfulGF's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
If we'd twitch in the morning my cat used to tell the dog to go wake us up, so he'd get yelled at - not her. If that didn't work the hideous meowing would ensue. Like fingernails down a chalk board. Cats. Gotta love 'em because you generally can't catch them to kill them. -

ARCHIVED Asking For Guidance In Taking Vitamins And Minerals.
pricklypear1971 replied to JustNana's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hear ya. I take my thyroid med as soon as I wake up and try to postpone coffee (with milk) as long as I can. Supposed to be one hour. After breakfast I take my iron and d3 and b complex and probiotic. At lunch or dinner I take my multi and fish oil and digestive enzyme (enzyme before if I remember) and cal/mag. Now, my ND has given me different... -
The What's For Dinner Tonight Chat
pricklypear1971 replied to jess-gf's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Leftover steak converted into quesadillas, with avocado and salsa and cheese. Making cheesecake for hubby's birthday celebration tomorrow... Just made Nutella fudge with the help of a visiting neighbor's wall-scaling Labradoodle and 3 nine year-old boys. One of which tried to handcuff the dog. And did I mention I'll be hitting the vodka later?? -

My college roomate's dad is an MD. Wow, the stories he would tell. Odd objects in the rectum were always popular stories....as well as the hospital worker that named her daughter Labia. -
ARCHIVED Bored Of What I Eat.. Going Crazy
pricklypear1971 replied to dani nero's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The alternating d and c is quite common during gluten recovery. Don't read too much into it unless you see a pattern or have immediate recognizable symptoms from a particular food. Vitamin panels will help; sadly, you can't run Celiac panels now that you are gluten-free. However, you never know what a doc will say regarding dx. If it is clearly a case... -
ARCHIVED Crazy Things We've Heard About Gluten? Also A Tiny Q
pricklypear1971 replied to PadmeMaster's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Food is another world, isn't it? Most MD's don't know flip about food, nutrition, or where to find gluten. That's why it's laughable when they tell you to consult your md. -

ARCHIVED Bored Of What I Eat.. Going Crazy
pricklypear1971 replied to dani nero's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's another reason to steer clear of alternative milks while you're li. Most here in the states add carageenan which is seaweed which is high in iodine. Another reason to make it at home. Go figure. -
ARCHIVED A Soap That I Found That Helps The Itch
pricklypear1971 replied to GFreeMO's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
All scents annoy me except essential oils. It's hard to tell of scents bother my DH because it bothers me so badly otherwise that I'm just annoyed and sneezy and itchy from them. My ND says its liver congestion. I tried to smell it but the "collective stench" from everything in that section made everything the same. I didn't see anything startlingly different... -

Dani, I don't know if you can do nuts at all, but cashews (I believe) are the only low sal nut. Check and see. You can make a variety of milk, cream, cream cheese sub using raw, unsalted cashews. You soak the amount to use in water overnight in the fridge, then rinse. Then put the nuts plus fresh water in the blender and mix to the consistency you want... -

I'm going to look at those today since I'm at the store. But I can't do scents. Ugh. -
The kindest thing to do is to not put them through the effort. You don't have to be rude, but the bottom line is that 95% of the time they will not prepare a safe meal or dish. This is one of the hardest things to do as a Celiac. Every family is different - there are no rules about how to do it. If they want to try perhaps a gluten-free cookbook...
-
Yes. Just pack your food and take it. Make a gluten-free dish to share, or not if it isn't that kind of meal. But you don't want to turn your back on family, and you don't want to get sick. So take your own food and let them learn to get over it.

ARCHIVED New Orleans gluten-free
pricklypear1971 replied to clarkpowers's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Oh, and don't eat any veggie souffles or casseroles. They'll put flour in there, usually. When I make LA recipes I'm constantly subbing a tablespoon here or there. Ask what form the veggies are in when you order. Don't assume spinach is saut -
ARCHIVED New Orleans gluten-free
pricklypear1971 replied to clarkpowers's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
You're welcome. I know you're new to this so I'm going to tell you something that will probably elicit frowns. If you don't already experience urgent symptoms from gluten - d, c, vomiting, nausea, headaches, etc. you get it....you're going to probably be ok going gluten light through NOLA. Now, I am not a proponent of "gluten light" because it doesn... -
ARCHIVED New Orleans gluten-free
pricklypear1971 replied to clarkpowers's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I haven't been to NOLA since gluten-free so I can't really help on specifics. Have you googled "new Orleans gluten-free"? You may find restaurant tips. I can give you a few pointers based on being a LA cook, though. No gumbos, nothing with a sauce - they will generally be roux based (wheat flour/oil). Stick with high end restaurants that have chefs... -

I thinkbits the luck of the draw. Some workplaces (and potlucks) are just more "friendly" than others. You got the short stick, apparently. I remember in college when I was on a fitness/workout regimen, looking at a potluck for an event in our office, and thinking "heck no"-and that was Pre gluten-free! I think you should find a way to mingle - even... -

Well, it's good news right? Are you saying that adding pears took away bloat that was happening within the last few days or that bloat just didn't happen (when seemingly everything makes you bloat)? I don't know the intricacies of rice but I'd guess that if you're ok with brown, white should be ok. Except, rice milks contain more than just rice...so... -
ARCHIVED Went gluten-free In Support And Found Out You Had It?
pricklypear1971 replied to Jestgar's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, could be gallbladder. I don't think we can do a thing until they are ready to try gluten-free or get tested. I can force our son to get tested, hubs is another story .
