  1. Yikes, I realize looking at my original post that it sounds like my hubby is all "go go go" career-wise. That isn't the case. Before my diagnosis last summer he was pushing for our curtailment of this tour and return to the United States since none of the doctors were taking it seriously -- they labeled me as "failure to thrive" and put me on anti-depressants...
  2. Had positive bloodwork in Poland. Repeated bloodwork in US while on vacation then was biopsied (positive) before returning to Poland. My main issue right now is severe abdominal pain...the brain fog, dizziness, tremors, brittle nails, weight loss, etc. have all improved. Still having sleep issues but that could be related to stress and/or vitamin deficiencies...
  3. I wasn't eating dairy when we went and it didn't pose a problem. As for rice...I don't remember eating any while I was there, and I'm a big rice fan. If it had been offered I would have eaten it! I just stuck to the the meat and veg, and didn't have a problem.
  4. So, I've been living on Poland since my diagnosis which has not exactly been great -- doctors don't seem to know anything about Celiac Disease, I've had major problems with food quality (why hey, I had no idea that you inject your chicken and turkey with additives that contain gluten 'cause the food labeling is bad to non-existent!), can't even attempt to...
  5. Anything that you ingest should be gluten free. I've heard some doctors say to not worry about shampoo or cosmetics (except for anything you put on your lips because that will end up in your system) but I am much more cautious. I mean, I sing in the shower so shampoo/conditioner/soaps have a chance of getting in my mouth where I'd swallow them. Also,...

    ARCHIVED Tiredness

The longer I've been on the diet the more energy I've had. It does take time to heal but you also might want to look at what you are eating. I found that I needed to up my protein consumption and eat several small meals a day -- with 2-3 oz. of protein at each sitting. Yes, I felt like I was eating all the time for a while but it made a huge difference and...
  7. City of Shadows? That is also an excellent book...set in Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power in the 1920s/1930s. Lots of intrigue with Russian nobility exiled after the revolution plus a scheme to put forth an imposter as the real Anastasia who survived the massacre of the Russian royal family. I really enjoyed it...but not medical at all!
  8. Everyone is going to have a different answer for this...depends on how long you were ill before diagnosis, what your symptoms were, how your body heals, how strictly you follow the diet, accidental glutenings, etc. The doctor who diagnosed me said to give the diet a minimum of 3 months for ANY improvement and 6-12 months to see real improvement. I...
  9. I like the Neutrogena Naturals lip balm. I also am a total fan of Red Apple Lipstick -- google the name and their site will come up. They have lipsticks, lip glosses and one type of balm plus they've introduced lip pencils. Their products are gluten free, paraben free, vegan, etc. I've never had a problem with them in terms of any sort of cross contamination...
  10. Ohhhh, loved the 'Mistress of the Art of Death' series by Ariana Franklin. Set in Medieval England (under Henry II) they center on Adelia, educated at the University of Salerno, a prodigy in anatomy and detection. She's more of a pathologist but does also end up having to treat patients. But Cambridge at the time is rather superstitious...and not exactly...
  11. Thanks! I'll pass along the info to my mother. Can't wait to hit a US grocery store and see all the stuff I can eat which currently isn't available to me...chicken, beef, bacon, ham plus labels. In English! With allergy labels!!! My God, I am going to be giddy with delight. Plus I found a shop in Medford that has tons of gluten-free foods...I try to avoid...
  12. Aw, Dani, I'm so sorry about the less than stellar doctor's visit. This is a great idea however... I'm thankful that: I have a diagnosis that shows I am not terminally ill. I have supportive family and friends who treat the gluten-free diet as a serious matter. I have access to all the knowledge and support that these forums provide. Coming here...
  13. I had to seriously up my intake of protein before I stopped feeling like I was starving all the time. I found that eating it in small amounts throughout the day was better than having it only at meals. For a while I felt like I was eating all the time since I had to snack between meals in order to not get cranky.
  14. I went to Athens about 3 months after my diagnosis...eating gluten-free was not a problem. A lot of the food is naturally gluten-free and I stuck to grilled chicken/pork/fish (no sauce) and lots of veg. I have the Triumph Dining cards and the one in Greek worked really well. All the servers took the issue very seriously and on more than one occasion went...
  15. Welcome to the forum! I didn't have C/D as a symptom from my Celiac but I can tell you that it took weeks/months for some of my symptoms to improve. The doctor who diagnosed me told me to give it at least 3 months to see any improvement and 6-12 months to see a real improvement in how I felt. Stick to plain natural foods (meat, rice, veg, fruit...dairy...
  16. So, I'm returning to the US next month and will be visiting relatives for several weeks. My almost 70-year old mom is being great...cleaning out her kitchen, removing all her baking ingredients, etc. Since we're going to be arriving after a long trip from E. Europe I want to give her a list of items to pick up for the first couple of days -- sticking to basics...
  17. I order my spices from Penzeys -- have used them for years and was happy that all their spices and seasonings are gluten-free. They told me the only things they sell that contain gluten are their soup bases which are made by another company.
  18. I read blogs by authors, by people who read the same books I read, people in my profession (librarianship), etc. There are few that I am 'religious' about checking but a couple that I subscribe to so that I know when there are new posts. I created a family blog the last time we moved. It is mostly for family (read: grandparents) and friends who want to...
  19. I gave up all dairy for several months. I'm 9 months gluten-free and at this point have some hard cheese occasionally (just a little bit) but when I tried yogurt about a month ago it wasn't pretty. Never been a milk fan so that isn't a problem. I was in Italy at the end of February and ate a lot of gelato; it didn't seem to give me any trouble but I haven...
  20. OMG! Love love love MOM's. I cannot wait to move back to Alexandria at the end of the summer where I will have ready access to the wonderful world of shopping at MOM's. I'll stop squeeing now...
  21. Just wanted to update an earlier post...I had lunch at Yellow Dog in Krakow yesterday and did not get glutened! The chef was amazing. He's from Singapore, fluent in English and knows about gluten issues. When I told him I needed to eat gluten free he said, "How strict are you? Do you have to or is it choice?" I guess the gluten-free diet trend has hit Poland...
  22. Awesome! I'm hoping that Arlington VA does one next year so I can participate.

    ARCHIVED Reading

OMG! Brilliant! I will have to try it. Ennis will do anything for cheese. Seriously.
  24. Not sure how your would compare these since it looks like different sets of tests? But from the ARUP tests it looks like your Tissue Transglutaminase Ab, IgA has dropped from 62 to 36 which shows movement in the right direction...namely downward! But I'm not a doctor or medical specialist. At 6 months gluten free I still showed up as 'positive' but was...

That dog is an absolute cutie! I've been wondering what to use for my profile pic and now I think I'll try to get a photo of our Border Terrier. If I can get him to sit still. He's not big on getting his photo taken. And back on topic...I just finished LOST ON PLANET CHINA by J. Marteen Troost which was hysterical and oh so true for those of us who have...
