  1. Okay, this is WAY too weird. My son asked me today if it would offend me if he organized a convention here for all my gluten-friends on the forum. He said it would be a get-together with nothing but STRICT gluten-free food (he is an EXCELLENT cook), and he wanted to get as many people as he could to get together. He wanted ideas for getting something started...
  2. Welcome Kessea and Stardust Valerie! I know you will be so happy that you found this forum. I have not had my computer for awhile, and I didn't realize how much I relied on this group for support, information, lots of laughs, you name it! This is a group of truly amazing people. Just wait, you'll see . . . . . ! Lynne
  3. Thank you ALL for the kind words, prayers, thoughts . . . I'm O.K., I think, I'm just really weary. As I write this, my DH is in the kitchen, doing dishes and cleaning -- and never complaining. I just want this to go away. I begged my doctor the last time I saw him to make it go away -- while sobbing. I'm just too young. It's so hard to keep to keep...
  4. I hate that everytime I go to the doctor, I get another autoimmune diagnosis. I hate that the last doctor I went to said that this disease was going to kill me, regardless of whether I was gluten-free or not. I hate that I HAVE this disease. I hate that the doctors won't do the genetic tests so that I can tell my kids whether they need to be tested...
  5. celiac disease survivor: where in Mexico do you get your vanilla (and if you're in the states, like KY, HOW do you get it??? ) and how do you make your vanilla syrup -- just the beans, water, sugar -- like all syrups??? Thanks for your help! . . . . Lynne
  6. I had asthma as a kid -- it went away around age 19. I had a fire in my bedroom (a candle overturned while I was sleeping -- awoke to a fiery bookcase and wall -- I stood over the fire, extinguishing it with a blanket, opened my bedroom window, but continued to sleep in the room that night. Ended up with thermal burns in my lungs from standing over the...

    ARCHIVED Need To Vent

Instead of going to a nutritionist, perhaps you could try going to a registered dietician. I found one in our community, and she was highly knowledgeable. In fact, she just sent more follow-up information to me yesterday. She spent 2+ hours with my husband and me, and gave me a lot of valuable information, free samples of things that she had picked up...
  8. Robix -- unfortunately, your experience isn't unusual. I finally got things going because of my eye doctor! I think you need to get a new doctor -- this guy sounds like an a$$. Can you go to a GI doc without a referral? I wish you all the luck --I know it's a hard journey, and you see a LOT of doctors before you get help. This forum is a great help...
  9. Hi Kathleen --welcome. Please know that from my experience on this forum, you're definitely not alone. These people have been a wealth of information and consolance when I need it the most. I'm sorry you've had such a terrible time. It will get better, and just keep the faith. (((hugs))) Lynne
  10. This is kind of weird. I have really long eyelashes, too . . . have had to have my lenses rounded out, as well. And I have really horrible fingernails. My mom has the same . . . she has also had horrible stomach trouble her entire life, but won't go to the doctor or do any follow-up to find out what it is.
  11. I'd just write a note back telling them that I am fully aware of the definition of gluten, and of the manifestations of gluten sensitivity -- particularly since you wrote THEM about a specific condition. I would also tell them that, given that they have little regard for keeping abreast of the ingredients in their products, and for the lack of interest in...
  12. I'd just write a note back telling them that, given that they have little regard for keeping abreast of the ingredients in their products, and for the lack of interest in the the health of their consumers, that you will no longer be using their products. In addition, you will be posting their response on the Celiac forum so that other gluten-intolerant patients...
  13. I don't know about Mary Kay stuff. My husband's best friend has a wife who is a consultant -- she used to drive me NUTS about buying it. I e-mailed Mary Kay.com, and their response was that the consultants have a list available to them . . . Now she says that there isn't a list, per se, but anything that I want to buy from her, I can look up on their website...
  14. Karen, you rock! ((((((((hugs))))))) Lynne
  15. I agree with Jen. I bought the Gluten-Free Bible, and I have found numerous errors throughout. I'm wondering if it is because it hasn't been revised, and new information has been coming down the pike through research much more than it was when the book was originally published. Wouldn't recommend it for someone new at this stuff, either. I learned (the...
  16. I know about the disease because I'm a PT and I have been "questionably diagnosed" with it! I have a lot of fusion in my vertebral bodies, particularly anteriorly, which is really unusual for my age -- 43. I am negative for HLA B-27, thoughy. I know about the folic acid, because I was on Methotrexate for over a year! In fact, I'm going to the rheumy tomorrow...
  17. Jen -- Tell your dh I like the way he thinks!!!!!
  18. According to the American Dietetic Association's book, Baby Ruth and Butterfinger are gluten-free, Snickers, Hershey's (regular and almond only), and I just tried kinnikinnick Double Chocolate Almond cookies and they are goooooood!
  19. I'd just write a note back telling them that, given that they have little regard for keeping abreast of the ingredients in their products, and for the lack of interest in the the health of their consumers, that you will no longer be using their products. In addition, you will be posting their response on the Celiac forum so that other gluten-intolerant patients...
  20. I had checked Chapstick, and they told me that it did contain gluten . . . I think they're giving out conflicting information . . . Don't know about Blistex, but I do know that Carmex is gluten-free, so is Burt's Bees, Badger Balm . . . I think everybody's listed those, though. . . . .
  21. Thank you for contacting them and for posting -- I read the "for over 40" and, being almost 44, thought -- aha! I need to buy that . . . . Now I guess it's not such a great idea -- at all! Thanks again. This was BIG help
  22. Went to a Bob Evans -- when I was in the restroom, the waitress who was doing the cooking did not wash her hands after using the bathroom. Have never been to a Bob Evans again. Almost threw up at the one that I was at that day.
  23. I think I had scarlet fever when I was a really little kid. . . . I agree with Stacie -- there are a LOT of good gluten-free treats out there! My husband and I like to go on shopping expeditions to see what we can find. He is much better than me at finding the good stuff! Once you get used to that kind of shopping (and that kind of price), gluten...
  24. Ankylosing spondylitis is also known as "bamboo spine", because the spine eventually fuses and has the appearance of bamboo rather than separate vertebrae. It is in the category of "spondyloarthropathies". I agree that the folic acid with the Methotrexate DEFINITELY decreases the nausea, etc. Unfortunately, it can start at any age -- all it takes is the...
  25. A question with regard to the two magazines: Does either Whole Foods Market or Wild Oats carry those??? I went to Whole Foods and they looked at me like I had two heads when I asked . . .Wild Oats said that they were familiar with Gluten Free Living, but not Living Without . . . . does anybody know who carries what???
