  1. It sounds to me like the party locale and the gifts are just right. I would suspect, but you know him better of course... that while he may not generally like surprises, as the event unfolds he'll be just fine. I would suggest that if he seems a bit 'put off' at first, be good-natured and loving about it and he'll come around. In other words, expect a not...
  2. If I had room in my fridge, I'd jump in my car and take a trip down to my local Costco to see if it's there today! (Spokane Valley, Wash) I'd love to have a good ravioli. Let us know how it goes when you make your own.
  3. I've had 2 things that made me tired since starting a gluten-free diet, and staying away from those things along with staying gluten-free has otherwise helped my energy levels a lot. The first thing was maltodextrin in a supplement, the supplement wasn't labeled gluten-free and I think the 'rule' about that ingredient being gluten-free doesn't necessarily...
  4. I voted for hodgson mills, but my vote was based on having tried the Betty Crocker and the Hodgson Mills yellow cakes over the holidays. And the Betty Crocker chocolate cake did get better reviews on their web site than the yellow cake. I just made a homemade gluten-free applesauce cake today, from a recipe I previously used with spelt flour. It's from...
  5. Mine is redder and drier looking I think, for the most part. You didn't mention if it's itchy or burning, I think that's one of the symptoms that it has in common, even if it doesn't look exactly like some of the others do.
  6. I have a twin brother, with our b-day in January. He wanted pizza for dinner, and obviously that wasn't going to work for me. So I told them I'd bring my own food, but I didn't feel like attempting to bring my own gluten-free version of pizza, especially with trying to warm it up when I got there, etc. So I brought some Asian rice noodles with a yummy spaghetti...
  7. Wow, lots of new messages while I was at work today... I wanted to throw out one idea, that it may be because he's so young that the rash will go away pretty quickly once he's off gluten, so that's what you're seeing. Especially since the steroids were part of the picture. It should hopefully mean (if he stays strictly gluten-free and all that...) that any...
  8. That's awesome! And I love your idea about the pancake batter in a muffin tin with sausage (or whatever). I'm so going to try it! Another one I saw, but haven't tried yet; from a show called 'Sara's weeknight meals' is to line a muffin tin with a slice of ham, drop in an egg and put on some grated cheese and bake until the egg is set. I don't remember how...
  9. I would agree, though I'm late to this thread. I had given up all dairy except butter months before going gluten-free. About a month or so ago I tried some sheep's milk feta from Greece, and it seemed fine. Then I tried some Danish havarti, also seems fine. So that I could have a little more variety, I also wanted to try some yogurt, but all of the ones I...
  10. And for me, the biggie I need to avoid is MSG and all of it's related variations (such as 'natural flavors'). See here: Open Original Shared Link I even recently tried some ground turkey that has 'natural flavors', and guess what? Started itching again... I am also somewhat low iodine now too, since I went that route after 2 months of a gluten-free diet...
  11. My first thought on seeing the pictures was agreement with the others. Given all of the other great responses, it may be that testing asap would be your only option; knowing the results may be negative due to the steroids. OR, the best option might be to see if the ped dr. will diagnose based on family history, and those pictures after a gluten-free trial...
  12. When I had it on my face, I used proactive solution and that helped a lot. (I thought at the time it was some form of adult acne....) However, I also put calamine lotion on it when I slept, to help with the itching. I knew I didn't want to scratch!
  13. I use my 5cup kitchen aid food processor for that most of the time, however I've also used one of those 'magic bullet' things for bread crumbs and it does the job well, also. It just does a smaller quantity. (Maybe 1 slice at a time vs 1/2 a slice). However, I also use the food processor to make mayo, and otherwise use it more often than the magic bullet...
  14. I believe the vitamin C in an orange is ascorbic acid, not citric acid. fwiw.
  15. Here's a thread with a response from Millstone about their flavored coffee's possibly having gluten: This thread talks about CC and coffee: And I know that I stopped drinking coffee and switched to tea after about 2 months of gluten-free, as I was having gluten type reactions, but not drinking flavored coffee. I think it's too easy for the flavored...
  16. I'm replying to this before reading to the end of the thread, so apologies if it's duplicate info. But, for dairy free you should be able to sub palm shortening for the butter in most cookie recipes, I would think? I got brave and made some sugar cookies a couple of weeks ago, and I did use butter (and a favorite Fannie Farmer recipe), plust adding some guar...
  17. If you work in a potato chip factory, I'd also be on the look-out for MSG, depending on whether items with MSG are also packaged in the same facility or on the same lines. I had to give up anything by Frito Lay, for that reason. I might have to figure out how to make my own chips, since another brand I found says they are made in a facility that also packages...
  18. Y. That was the short answer. The longer answer is that was my experience, I don't think it's terribly unusual.
  19. I just thought I'd throw in to the conversation, that since I've been gluten-free, when I have a flare on the back of my knees it gets itchy but at times it's more of a burning sensation; and the burning wasn't part of it at all before that. Before it was just really itchy....
  20. Kyle, wow that's a lot! And I'm sorry, some of it was sort of funny (the way you wrote it) though I know it's not at all fun. I can't add much to what rosetapper23 wrote, except to suggest you also try a gluten-free probiotic (acidophilus or similar) if yogurt doesn't agree with you. If you prefer to try yogurt first, then I'd suggest looking for one that...
  21. If you're going to do that, you'll have to include the thread about how long it takes to toast our lovely gluten-free bread: You all crack me up!
  22. To the OP, yes I've noticed that when I get an outbreak of sorts, it's itchiness is less than before I went gluten-free. It's also for a much shorter duration (i.e. maybe a few hours, as opposed to always...) And yes, worse after a shower or in the late afternoon and evening. Hang in there, it does get better! And to Charli61, possibly yes from corn,...
  23. I decided to test coconut flour, and made some pancakes using the recipe from: Open Original Shared Link and they were nice and fluffy, and pretty yummy! I only got 5 pancakes out of it, rather than the 8 they noted on the recipe, I was hoping for a couple left over, but alas I scarfed them all down. If the test goes o.k. (so far so good, a couple of...
  24. Do you take any supplements with lunch? Or maybe an afternoon snack / coffee break? I'd look at ingredients in supplements, even if they're gluten-free. The ingredients I'm currently avoiding in supplements are gelatin (capsule) and maltodextrin (plus soy, and gluten of course). I've had maltodextrin give me brain fog. It may depend on the source, but for...
