There was a thread on here a few months ago about those, several people (including myself) had bad reactions. I suspect either MSG or sulfites, due to the reaction I had. At the time I suspected msg cc, but now that I know more about sulfites and that they're frequently used in the processing of potato products I suspect that's more likely.

Yes, thank you and welcome. I look forward to reading your insights and tips! -
ARCHIVED Dow Bread Enhancer
ciamarie replied to kareng's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Here's something funny, last Thanksgiving or so my (twin) brother, who would not consider putting down the wheat bread, said something to the effect of ' Before you know it, the only thing you'll be able to eat is tree bark' ! Maybe he's not too far off... lol. Though seriously, it looks similar to some of the ingredients in EnerG bread. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cooking School.
ciamarie replied to Stubborn red head's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I didn't sign up for the emails, but I found some info. from that site helpful, and I did find a flat bread recipe there that's a winner! -
ARCHIVED Food Diary And Symptom Tracker
ciamarie replied to That GF Girl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I currently use a desktop diary, with a new page every week using Zim Wiki: Open Original Shared Link Before that I was using something called Red Notebook, which is available here: Open Original Shared Link Then, I can just do a search for different symptoms and/or foods, and I also have a page for ingredients for some foods like cereal. -
ARCHIVED Fiber
ciamarie replied to Mom23boys's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't use it often as a supplement, but I have Yerba Prima psyllium husk powder, and apparently Metamucil also uses psyllium husk powder and adds flavors and whatnot to it. -
ARCHIVED What Are The Foods With The Most Gluten?
ciamarie replied to mamaupupup's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Semolina flour (Pasta) is high in gluten, as are some of the 'artisan' breads, or almost any bakery bread or bagel I believe. Some of them probably add extra gluten, for good measure. -
ARCHIVED Need Some Encouragment
ciamarie replied to Mama of 6's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do you have the actual test results, and which tests they took? If you're now gluten-free, it's likely too late to have more tests done, but if you share details on what you have some of the more knowledgable folks should be able to let you know if perhaps you're borderline or something? Also, yes false negatives seem to be somewhat common. It's also not... -
ARCHIVED Might Have Dh, Need Advice
ciamarie replied to BubblesandBunnies's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I do have one suggestion on the gluten-free cookie recipes you have, and that is to make a 1/2 batch the first time you try one if it's possible. That way you can see how it turns out and don't waste ingredients. Unless you're the type of person (like I am) that will eat them even if they aren't quite what they should be. Sometimes recipes take a little tweaking... -
ARCHIVED Transglutaminase / Meat Glue
ciamarie replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
And hey, I see the manufacturer is Ajinomoto which is, I believe I have read on at least one related site, the number one maker of MSG! Awesome! This might also explain why I was having reactions to store-bought beef, though I've recently tested some 'natural' beef and did o.k. (In the case of beef, if it's labeled 'natural' it's not supposed to contain... -
I've had that happen too, though not as frequently lately. And if the Tylenol was bothering you after a few days, it might have been sulfites too. Corn starch has sulfites. I had a headache today and wanted to take an aspirin but didn't for that reason.

ARCHIVED I Used gluten-free Flour, Why Am I Still Feeling Icky?
ciamarie replied to hopeonthemove's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
What's in the Bob's all-purpose flour? I recall looking at it recently and there was something in there I either avoid, or it's still a question for me, so I put it back. Does it have sorghum? If so, that might be it, I think that didn't agree with me but I'm going to test it again in a month or 2. You could try another all-purpose gluten-free flour blend... -
ARCHIVED Symptoms Check
ciamarie replied to lauracooley's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I second what beachbirdie said, and while it may be too late for your dr's appointment, I'd also want to ask if you've noticed whether the symptoms are worse after eating any particular foods? It may be gluten, but it may also be something else like msg or soy or sulfites or artificial flavors (or some combination of those!). Hopefully you get some answers... -
As I recall, acne doesn't itch but DH sure does! When I had it on my face (thinking it was a weird adult acne) I used calamine lotion on it in the evening so I wouldn't scratch. I recall it did help. Then I also started using proactive solution and that helped clear some of it up. It didn't go away completely until I stopped eating wheat. You might want to...

ARCHIVED Oats. Don't Think It's Good News.
ciamarie replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Have you had the other ingredients before with no problem? (i.e. date sugar and honey). Just to be sure, you could try a few grains of oatmeal by themselves, not in the cookie? -
ARCHIVED celiac disease Associated Autoantibodies In Dh Published 4/12

Dunno. But it does look promising, as far as a tool for detecting DH / celiac without biopsy! -
ARCHIVED Might Have Dh, Need Advice
ciamarie replied to BubblesandBunnies's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I wasn't aware of what prickly mentioned, about DH celiacs testing better on some celiac tests than others, so perhaps getting those tests if you can before going gluten-free would be something to try if you want a dx. I can just about guarantee that you will not want to go back to eating gluten later for testing. And I'm currently on unemployment, and... -
87 degrees F here today, omg! A few days ago there were freeze warnings in the overnight hours. It's crazy. And I don't have my a/c in the window yet, I don't usually get it put in until the end of May. I knew it was going to heat up, so I did a bit of cooking over the last couple of days, making some flat bread, boiled a few eggs and last night I cooked...

ARCHIVED Perfect Cornbread!
ciamarie replied to pricklypear1971's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Generally, if you add an acid (buttermilk, vinegar, regular milk, yogurt and I've also used cream!), it'll help baking soda give the right 'lift' to non-gluten-free flours. And it also helps baking powder. Just yesterday I made a flat bread with baking soda and 2 T yogurt, and it had the right amount of lift. Today I did the same recipe but used 1 T of heavy... -
To help with the pasta, I use rice noodles a lot, found in the asian food section of the grocery store, much more reasonable on the budget. You'll want to boil water, put in some noodles and let them wilt and stir them into the water, bring it back to the boil for a couple minutes. Stir them to make sure they're not sticking together, or to the pan. Then...

ARCHIVED Don't Know Much......new
ciamarie replied to vella's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was starting to have some cramps (top of foot and calf) that woke me up at night, not very long ago. I believe it was due to eating sorghum, as I haven't had that issue since about 3 weeks ago when I stopped eating it. Prior to starting gluten-free, I had switched to margarine (soy) for a short while instead of butter, and started having awful foot cramps... -

ARCHIVED Substituting For Gluten Free Flour
ciamarie replied to marys2012's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm not a big fan of the pre-mixed flours, mostly due to their cost. What I've done is substitute about 25-30% of the flour quantity using one or a combination of starches (tapioca, potato and/or corn starch -- though for tapioca it may be called tapioca flour and that will be the same as tapioca starch. For potato and corn, you want the starch and not the... -
ARCHIVED Restaurant Won't Let Me Bring In My Own Food
ciamarie replied to Newbee's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Did you speak to the manager, or to whoever answered the phone? If you didn't speak to the manager, you could try calling again when it's not a busy time (i.e. mid-morning between breakfast and lunch rush or mid-afternoon, between lunch and dinner rush). When the person answers the phone, tell them you probably need to speak to the manager, because you have... -
On the DH topic area, some have mentioned they were helped by a low salicylate diet, so I looked at the list of foods and realized I was regularly eating some in the high and very high category, and still have some symptoms 6 months after being on a gluten-free diet. And I think having a low body temp. would tie into that also. So while those thyroid tests...
